  • Tim Ziemba
On Sunday - February 24 th - we brought you an interview with Plasma Physicist Tim Ziemba talking about a very exciting new development in space technology. Tim is a graduate student at the University of Washington working with Dr. Robert Winglee to see if small artificially created magnetospheres can be used for spacecraft propulsion. If this technology proves practical, it will offer unprecedented capabilities for solar system exploration.
There is a plasma wind that blows through space and fills the solar system with the magnetically charged extended atmosphere of the sun. Although as tenuous as whisper from beyond the grave, this solar wind may prove to be the key to opening the solar system to exploration by humans and machines.
People have long speculated on using the radiation pressure of the light from the sun to propel spacecraft across the solar system. But this would require huge sails many miles across made from exceedingly light weight materials. A few years ago some people speculated about using magnetic sails created by large loops of superconducting material that would interact with the magnetic field of the solar wind and thereby propel spacecraft across the solar system. But this system would require spacecraft with structures tens or even hundreds of miles in diameter.

He also has appeared with the London Sinfonetta at Royal Festival Hall, and with the Birmingham Symphony under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle. He currently appears in concert as a member of The Broadway Tenors - a unique theatrical concert experience. THE PAJAMA GAME - In May, 2002, Brent starred opposite Karen Ziemba in the City Center Encores! production of The Pajama Game "In this amiable reincarnation of a well-worn favorite, Karen Ziemba and Brent Barrett are perfectly cast as the classic American She and He...Ms. Ziemba and Mr. Barrett are so well suited to their parts it makes you think that 50 years ago they might have had the high-profile Broadway careers of a Mary Martin and a John Raitt...It's gratifying to see them so effortlessly radiant in starring roles...Mr. Barrett has a voice and manner so polished that you expect to see your reflection in them, as well as a gentle air of self-mockery that keeps him from being a total period-piece her. He delivers the starry-eyed 'Hey There,' in which Sid sings along with his own tape-recorded voice, with as much matinee-idol dreaminess as is bearable."

Character Assassination The 'doll' can sing and dance Recently I said to someone that Karen Ziemba is essentially the all-purpose musical theatre actressshe can belt credibly enough to do the Merman/Martin classics, she can dance well enough to do Verdon's or Rivera's roles in Fosse shows or Cassie (or several women) in A Chorus Line , she has a soprano range that qualifies her for some more nontraditional roles (like Lizzie in 110 in the Shade ), she's got the comic chops to play the soubrette in just about anything, and she's a natural enough actress to fill in the blanks elsewhere. There's a revealing role that she could not play, however. She could not ever be Mame Dennis, except perhaps in a stretch for a regional theater somewhere. And that's because for all she has, it's never quite enough to allow her to carry a show on her own shoulders. Ziemba can do just about any show and you're never sure just how you should object to her performance; there's nothing technically deficient about anything she does. But the ladies whose roles she's now essaying were more than adequate in every respect. They were special. She is not. She is a rather plain, aging woman without much unique charm or exuberant personality. If she ever did a Jerry Herman show (where exuberant personality is the necessary characteristic) she'd have the floor mopped up with her.

KAREN ZIEMBA LEAVES CONTACT FOR HOUSE AND GARDEN
"After two years, it's time to move on," said Karen Ziemba last Thursday in discussing with Broadway To Vegas about leaving her Tony Award winning role in Contact and opening simultaneously in two shows - House and Garden.
KAREN ZIEMBA She'll begin rehearsals in early September for the East Coast premiere of the Alan Ayckbourn's duo of comedies at the GEVA Theatre in Rochester, NY.
Ziemba's final performance at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre as the 50's housewife with the vivid imagination will be on Sunday, September 2nd.
Ayckbourn's linked plays, House and Garden - which received their US debut at the Goodman Theatre last year - are performed concurrently in side-by-side theatres. Ziemba plays Trish, the put-upon mistress of the chaotic country estate where both plays are set. She is joined by Christa Moore and Julian Gamble under the direction of GEVA's Artistic Director Mark Cuddy.
"I'm not exactly sure how this is going to work because we haven't started rehearsals, but what happens is that the two theaters are connecting. As I am doing my scenes in one play
