Research Project
By polymerizing olefins with a transition metal catalyst in the presence of clay, nanocomposite materials with exfoliated structures can be made. These nanocomposites are of interest due to their potential enhancement in physical properties such as, flexural modulus and flame retardancy. We are currently developing methods for making nanocomposites, measuring their physical properties, as well as understanding the activation mechanism of the catalyst by clay.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE
1950 - present
The First Asians in the American Continent The first recorded Asians in America arrived on ships that were part of the Manila Galleon trade, which was Spanish trade between Manila, Philippines and Acapulco, Mexico. During a stop-over on the Louisiana coast, some Filipino crew members jumped ship and ventured into the bayous. These "Manila Men" founded a village named Saint Malo that consisted of about a dozen small huts raised above the swamps. Eight generations later, some of their descendants can be found living in Louisiana today.
The California Gold Rush Gold is discovered at Sutter's Mill, California. Chinese in the Canton area were lured by pamphlets distributed by opportunistic ship owners who hoped to fill their passenger vessels. Chinese eager to escape overpopulation, famine, and poverty that resulted from the Taiping rebellion came to California to make their fortunes in California's "Gam Saan" - Gold Mountain.

Contact: Barbara McKenna (831) 459-2495; mckenna@cats.ucsc.edu New book gives voice to the stories of Chinese American women FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SANTA CRUZ, CAExpected to serve and obey without question, often exploited as factory workers, indentured servants, or prostitutes, Chinese women who immigrated to America in the early 20th century were considered powerless over their own destiny. However, a new book by historian Judy Yung, which gives voice to the unheard stories of many of these women and their daughters, reveals lives lived with fortitude, resilience, and great strength of character. The book, titled Unbound Voices: A Documentary History of Chinese Women in San Francisco (UC Press), depicts the history of Chinese American women in a very moving and personal mediumtheir own words. Yung, an associate professor of American studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, tells two stories at once in her new book: the social history of Chinese women in San Francisco from the turn of the century through World War II and the personal tales of 40 Chinese American women. Yung's compelling history unfolds through oral histories, immigration interviews, newspaper articles, letters, poems, autobiographies, speeches, and other sources. Unbound Voices, a sequel to Yung's 1995 book, Unbound Feet (also published by UC Press), uses the same structure as its award-winning predecessor, beginning with the women who lived in China in the 19th century, progressing on to experiences of Chinese immigrant women in San Francisco in the early 1900s, and those of their second-generation daughters during the Great Depression and World War II.

January 16, 1996 Contact: Barbara McKenna (408/459-2495) AUTHOR OF BOOK ON HISTORY OF CHINESE AMERICAN WOMEN IN SAN FRANCISCO TO PRESENT TALK AND BOOKSIGNING FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more than a thousand years foot-binding was an obligatory practice for genteel women of China. Although bound feet marked women as well-to-do members of society, the custom also necessitated a cloistered and dependent life. Yung uses foot-binding as a central theme to trace the stages of "unbinding" that took place in the lives of Chinese women immigrants in San Francisco from the late 1800s through the end of World War II. Yung, an assistant professor of American studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, presents an engaging history by supplementing factual information with case studies, profiles, and oral histories of women who lived in those times. Her facts were meticulously researched using U.S. census and immigration documents, Chinese- and English-language newspapers, and oral history. The text is complemented by more than 30 photos. Citing such Chinese proverbs as, "The absence of talent in a woman is a virtue," Yung follows the changes in lifestyles and identities that occurred among the first immigrants and their daughters and later immigrants. Yung is also the author of Chinese Women of America: A Pictorial History (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1986) and, with Him Mark Lai and Genny Lim, Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940 (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1991), winner of the 1982 Before Columbus Foundation Book Award.
