28. The Mighty Organ | Vincent In Brixton
The letters selected in the programme reveal the young vincent as an intelligent and observant man, enjoying himself and whose strongest connection to life
http://www.themightyorgan.com/features_vininbrixton.html
By Stagedoor Johnny Vincent in Brixton by Nicholas Wright RNT Cottesloe Theatre Cast: Ursula Loyer Claire Higgins Vincent Van Gogh Jochum Ten Haaf Eugenie Loyer Emily Blunt Sam Plowman Paul Nicholls Anna Van Gogh Emma Handy Directed by Richard Eyre 'They (critics) should always be ignored. All they ever do is interfere with the personality of the author and the independence of the reader.' Anton Chekov What is really disturbing about Eyre's production of Wright's play at the Cottelsoe is that a sizeable section of the audience stood and cheered 'bravos' at the end. What is also surprising is that this impersonation of playwriting has received universally good reviews. The theatrical Cambridge mafia which has kept its grasping little hands tightly around the throat of the theatre in this country since the sixties, is a background presence in this theatrical example of mutton dressed as lamb. Our great theatrical institutions have been and are still run by this sinister organisation. Two of our acting knights are members. Viewed from a basis of pure merit I am forced to the opinion that the honours bestowed on these two luvvie gentlemen in part must have been for services to the bacon industry, but that's only my opinion (and the opinion of many others who keep quiet about it to avoid the knock on the door in the night from the Culture Police) Michael Gambon left Olivier's National because he couldn't get decent parts in a company which was bringing through people like Colin Blakely, Maggie Smith, Tony Hopkins, Derek Jacobi, Robert Stephens and a host of others. Ian McKellen couldn't get in the door, and there are many who believe that is where he should have remained. Our spin doctors and hype shamans still coin phrases about our theatre being 'the envy of the world'. Well, it was at one time, but the reputation of the British theatre was founded not on exciting new writing or genius directors, but on actors. Olivier, Gielgud, Richardson, Redgrave, Edith Evans, Sybil Thorndike and latterly, the grand old man of Balcombe Paul Scofield, still MR. not SIR Paul Scofield, were the ones who hauled our tired old stages up into the stellar reaches.

    Fr. Vincent Blake, OP:
Biography of a Missionary Preacher PREV HOME NEXT PART TWO OF NINE:
Fr. Vincent's Childhood Years Vincent and his sister. Fr. Vincent Blake was born in Perry, Iowa, on May 7, 1925 into a home where maintaining one's dignity and doing a hard day's work were important values. His father, Al, worked for the railroad; his mother, Ethel, gave up a public school teacher position in Des Moines to rear her children. "I understood from a very early age that they cared for people," says Vincent.
It was not unusual for the small boy to hear his parents talking to homeless people at the back door, providing them with milk and leftovers. "My father felt kinship with the poor and homeless during the depression," says Fr. Vincent. "These acts of kindness made a lasting impression on me. Years later, I followed my parents' example."
The young boy also had a good role model in President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Fr. Vincent still can remember the impact that Roosevelt had on his father. "I don't think he missed a radio broadcast," recalls Fr. Vincent. "My father respected him because he represented the poor, not the rich. And it wasn't just in his speeches; he put his words into action. Many of my father's friends were helped by the WPA program which gave them work." From an early age, therefore, Vincent was taught the importance of hard work and of recognizing the dignity of others.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL FOUNDER OF THE VINCENTIANS 1660 Feast: July 19 Vincent now returned to France and chanced to be brought to the attention of Queen Marguerite of Valois, who appointed him her almoner. This office gave him the income from a small abbey. For a time he lodged in the same house as a lawyer, who was one day robbed of a considerable sum. He openly charged Vincent with the theft and spoke against him to all his friends. Vincent did nothing save quietly deny the charge, adding, "God knows the truth." For six years he bore the slander, making no further denial, and at last the real thief confessed. Speaking as though the victim had been someone else, Vincent once told this story at a conference with his priests, in order to show that patience, silence, and resignation are generally the best defense of innocence. Vincent soon came to know a famous priest of Paris, Monsieur de Berulle, afterwards a cardinal. Father Berulle, who at that time was founding a branch of the Congregation of the Oratory in France, recognized Vincent's worth. He found for him a curacy at Clichy, in the outskirts of Paris, and later through his influence Vincent became tutor to the children of Philip de Gondi, Count of Joigny and general of the galleys of France. The countess, a serious-minded woman, was so impressed by Vincent that she eventually chose him as her spiritual director. In 1617, while the family was at its country seat at Folleville, in the diocese of Amiens, Vincent was sent for to hear the confession of a peasant who lay dangerously ill. In the course of his questioning, Vincent learned that every one of the peasant's previous confessions had been sacrilegious. On his recovery the man declared, in the presence of the countess, that he would have been eternally lost if he had not spoken with Vincent. Unlike the majority of noble women of this period, who felt no responsibility for their dependents, this good lady was concerned about the spiritual welfare of her tenantry. She persuaded Vincent to preach in the parish church of Folleville and instruct the people. Such crowds came to confess that he called the Jesuits of Amiens to his aid. The Congregation of the Mission had its inception at this time.

A brash young Dutchman, working for a London Branch of an international firm of art dealers, Vincent rents a room in the house of an English widow. Three years later, he returns to Europe on the first step of a journey which will end in breakdown. Vincent in Brixton is about the transforming effect of love, sex and artistic adventure on unformed talent. It traces the birth of a genius. In 2003, Vincent in Brixton won Britain's Olivier Award for best new play, and a Tony Award nomination for best play on Broadway.

Since many of his family members at had either attended the prestigious university of Yale, or had married into Yale families, it was not surprising that the young Vincent Price ended up there as well. Graduating in 1933, he took a minor job teaching art appreciation, coaching dramatics, and, believe it or not, occasionally driving a bus at the Riverdale School in New York. There, while playing one of the leads in a three-act production of "H.M.S. Pinafore", he realized that his true calling in life would be the stage. Besides that, the teaching experience had taught him that - surprise - college had taught him very little! With a $900 tuition check from his parents, Price finally received a Masters Degree from the Cortauld Institute in London, slightly furthering his education.

'Vincent' plays with history, painter's life
    By Robert L. Pincus
ART CRITIC April 24, 2005 But when we look at history, we read time backward, which is why van Gogh's years in England appealed to British playwright Nicholas Wright as the subject of a play. Not many of those who go to see "Vincent in Brixton," on the Old Globe's Cassius Carter Centre Stage through May 8, can avoid superimposing knowledge of his later history on Wright's portrait of the artist at 20. Nor does the playwright fail to exploit this collective familiarity. Wright plays such knowledge for irony when van Gogh (Graham Hamilton) says to Sam Plowman (Ross Hellwig), an aspiring artist, "I myself have no artistic talent. But I spend my life in the spiritual company of those who do. I am an art dealer." Standard accounts of van Gogh's life, like the highly readable 1990 biography by David Sweetman, emphasize how the young tenant's unrequited love for Eugenie anticipated unhappy relations with women in general. But van Gogh's allusion to "secrets" have led to a different speculative conclusion: that the young man, initially in love with Eugenie, became enamored with her mother and eventually had an affair with Ursula.

    37. Vincent Dunin-Marcinkievich
Vincent DuninMarcinkievich was born on January 23, 1808 in the estate of archbishop of Mahilyow and a writer, was managing education of young vincent.
    http://www.belarusguide.com/culture1/people/Dunin.html
    Vincent Dunin-Marcinkievich (1808-1884)
Vincent Dunin-Marcinkievich is considered a founder of the New Belarusian Literature. His lifework was devoted to establishment of the literature in Belarusian language and he laid the democratic foundations of it's further development. He was prosecuted and offended from both Russian imperial system and polish nobility (shlyahta), and yet he managed to find means to publish several books, operas and dramas, and to give way to Belarusian literary language. Dunin-Marcinkievich had built a strong foundation for a future development of the Belarusian national literature and was at the very beginning of Belarusian cultural revival.
Vincent Dunin-Marcinkievich was born on January 23, 1808 in the estate of Panyushkavichy, close to Babrujsk, in a family of small rank Belarusian noblemen (slyahtich) Ivan Dunin-Marcinkievich. His parents died when he was young, and he was brought up in the families of different relatives. His uncle on mother's side - Stanislau Bogush-Sestrancevich, who was an archbishop of Mahilyow and a writer, was managing education of young Vincent. After graduating from community school in Pinsk he entered Medical School of Vil'na University but was soon forced to leave it because of health problems. He started to work as a secretary in private agency of Baranouski in Vil'na.
After the October uprising in 1830, that was drowned in blood, the cultural development of the area has stalled: the Vil'na University - a center of Belarusian and Lithuanian independent thought was closed by tsar, many magazines and newspapers were forbidden, the monstrous system of imperial police and bureaucracy was wiping out all the remnants of Belarus and Litva from the maps of Europe. Even their names were replaced with a neutral North-Western Side of Empire.

Wing's Theatre's production of Vincent, by Robert Mitchell, proved to be an interesting attempt to musicalize the disparate events of the illustrious artist's life. The show proceeded at a frenetic and dizzying pace. Although audience members with ADD might have been gladdened by the frequent change of scene, those who liked to take time getting to know the characters and settling into the world of the show had a tougher time. The play began somewhere in van Gogh (Paul Woodson) 's early adulthood when exactly was never clearly or adequately defined. But the audience learned surprisingly that young Vincent was studying to be a preacher. A nanosecond later the audience saw Vincent renouncing the pulpit in favor of living among an impoverished mining community. (In a scene strangely reminiscent of Floyd Collins, van Gogh witnesses a horrible mining accident.) And so it continued in a myriad of mostly disconnected scenes, the audience watched Van Gogh gradually decay before their very eyes. They stared as the poor young artist fell strangely in love with his first cousin; they wincingly watched him fail as a young gallery clerk. They fidgeted in their seats as his brother, Theo (Erik Schark)

Who is Brigadier General Vincent Brooks?
Below is another great article written about General Brooks published by Africana Who is Brigadier General Vincent Brooks?
"We are role models to a lot of young people, not just African Americans and soldiers," Brooks says. "People can see the achievement and how hard work leads to it."
    By Tanu T. Henry
Delivered with a cool that's more Hollywood than Pentagon, Brigadier General Vincent Brooks' daily briefings — telecast worldwide from the US Central Command outpost in Qatar — have brought instant celebrity status to the handsome military spokesman. Tall, confident, witty and articulate, Brooks, 44, distills the coalition's progress, setbacks, strategy and vision in a sober tone. He's one of the most trustable faces of Operation Iraqi Freedom (given the competition, perhaps that's not a difficult designation to win).
But Brooks' sudden wartime high profile symbolizes much more than the Army's much-touted diversity, though it's nice to see his face there, reminding us that African Americans served and thrived throughout the branches of the US military long before the country's private and public sectors caught up. And Brooks' above-par record of academic achievement matched by his professional success challenge the notion that his selection might be the strategic plucking of an amiable black figure to ease the digestion of a controversial military mission to a global public already suspicious of the war's racial undercurrent. Throw in the fact that his father, Leo Brooks, is a retired US Army Brigadier General, and that his brother, Brigadier General Leo Brooks, Jr., serves as a commandant of cadets at West Point, and it's easy to see that Vincent Brooks is used to representing more than just himself.

Edited by Canon Bertal Heeney volume two
Toronto: Musson, 1920. 299 pp. THOMAS VINCENT IT was the policy of the Church Missionary Society from the advent of the first missionary in the country to educate and train a body of country-born clergy, who would carry on and extend the work of evangelizing the Indians in North-West Canada. Of these, Thomas Vincent was, perhaps, the most remarkable for his fiery zeal in the cause of Christ. He was born on the first of March, 1835, at Osnaburgh, within the borders of that territory in which he was destined to labour as a missionary for many years. His father, John Vincent, was a fur-trader for the Hudson's Bay Company at Osnaburgh, and his mother, Charlotte Thomas, the daughter of a Hudson's Bay officer, was born at Moose Factory. They retired from the fur trade in 1840, and made their home in St. Paul's Parish, Middlechurch. Here Thomas attended the parish school, receiving an elementary education, and in the humble home life he received that training in manual toil and resourcefulness, which in after years made him a successful missionary in the wild wastes of the north. The home influences surrounding young Vincent were no small factor in deciding his future. His mother was a devout and God-fearing woman, with a deep reverence for the things of God, and out of her holy admiration for the missionaries in the Red River Valley sprang the desire that one of her sons should be given to the ministry. It was in direct answer to her prayers that the call came to Thomas Vincent as he was one day working in the meadow. There and then he gave his heart to God and decided to serve Him as a missionary.
