She was the epitome of style and grace, the consummate professional actress and a loving friend who signed a photo for me even though she was gravely ill. Did she receive the official kudos she should have? There was no salute by the American Film Institute, or the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, although her career spanned almost an entire century from silents to talkies to television. Did her fans love her? They adored her and that meant everything to her. The outpouring of love and genuine sorrow at her passing has amazed me. Many fans thought of her as a role model and words such as "beautiful," "delightful," and "gorgeous" have been used to describe her trademark swirling entrances which so many are remembering fondly today. LORETTA YOUNG Longevity, Talented, and A Very Sweet Actress! Here parents separated when Loretta was just three years old. It was then that her mother moved the rest of the family to Southern California. Mrs. Young's brother-in-law was an assistant director and managed to get the young Loretta a small role in the film, THE ONLY WAY in 1917. Actually the role consisted nothing more than a small, weeping child lying on an operating table. Later that year she appeared in another small role in THE PRIMROSE RING. It was this film that starred Mae Murray who was taken with the little Loretta. She even wished to adopt her, but Mrs. Young said no. Loretta did wind up staying with the Murray's for a year and a half. She would not be in another film again until 1921 when she had a brief scene in THE SHEIK. During that period she and her sisters were educated in parochial schools. Afterwards she went back to helping her mother run the boarding house Mrs. Young started when they had first moved west. In 1927, Loretta came back to the silver screen in a small part in NAUGHTY, BUT NICE. She was all of fourteen, but anxious to get started in a film career for real.

She passed away at the home of her sister Georgian Montalban and actor Ricardo Montalban early on Saturday, said longtime agent and friend Norman Brokaw. Loretta Young was born Gretchen Young in January 1913. Her big Hollywood break came by chance. A director telephoned asking for her sister Polly Ann who was unavailable for an audition at the time. Gretchen, aged 14, went instead. Although it was only for a bit role, it led to a contract and a name change to Loretta. Famous for close-ups Sharing the spotlight with Warren Beatty at the 1982 Oscars She was soon on her way to a career in which she made almost 100 films that exploited her elegant beauty. With a career extending from the silent era and beginning age four, albeit as an extra with her sisters, she got her first breakthrough role in Mervin LeRoy’s “Naughty But Nice”. When the director phoned to ask to speak to her older sister, Polly Ann, Gretchen substituted. Her first leading role came in 1929 in “Laugh Clown Laugh”, one of the last “silent era” films. The same year she made “The Squall” (one of the first sound-enabled films), and, impressing Darryl Zanuck, she was signed onto a contract with Warner Brothers. When Zanuck left Warner for Twentieth Century Fox in 1934, she followed and made many successful films for him. Appearing opposite most of the male stars of the time such as Cary Grant in “Born to be Bad” (1934), Clark Gable in “Call of the Wild” (1935) and Orson Welles in “The Stranger” (1946), her first official recognition for film came in 1947 when she won a Best Actress Oscar (despite stiff opposition) as the Swedish country girl who faces the perils of city-life in “The Farmer’s Daughter”. This evidently boosted her credentials, since she starred alongside Cary Grant and David Niven in “The Bishop’s Wife” (1948) and, in 1949, when she was Oscar-nominated for her role as a nun in 1949’s “Come to the Stable.”
