    STYX: Behind The Grand Illusion
    By John Everson
S tyx once played on the old saw "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times" and garnered a top 40 single out of the deal. But the days of the Paradise Theatre are long past. The process of recording and touring to promote Brave New World (CMC International), the first studio album to reunite lead singer-songwriters Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw and James Young since 1983’s Kilroy Was Here , seems to have brought on the flip side of that single, creating one of the band’s "worst of times." While press releases report that Styx’s decision to tour this summer without DeYoung due to health problems was made without enmity, the truth is, the band is divided into two camps. Shaw and Young haven’t spoken to DeYoung since the final days of readying the album, which was released in June. And while publicity is also mum on absence of another founding member, the fact is, bassist Chuck Panozzo has also chosen to sit out the current tour, leaving Young and Shaw to carry the Styx name around the country with an unknown Canadian singer, Lawrence Gowan, filling in for DeYoung, and Glen Burtnik (who filled Shaw’s shoes for a 1990 album and tour) handling Panozzo’s spot. So what gives?

    John W. Young Papers
    CAINE MSS COL 26
This collection contains papers and correspondence relating to various business affairs of John W. Young (1844-1924), son of Brigham Young and Mary Ann Angell. John W. Young served as a member of the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prior to his father's death as well as being a counselor to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. But John W. Young is better known for his business enterprises, mainly railroad construction. He was involved in several railroad companies or railroad construction projects during the latter half of the 19 th Century in Utah and throughout the West. The second section contains papers and correspondence related to Young's acquisition of property in northern Mexico to aid Mormon settlement in that region. Most of the documents are legal papers related to the transfer of land or correspondence between Young and William Derby Johnson, who acted as Young's agent in acquiring the property. Most of the letters describe difficulties being experienced by Johnson due to young's failure to supply the necessary funds as stipulated in the contracts. The last section is one letter from Young to G.W. Thatcher and John N. Pike regarding the establishment of the Utah Western Railway and other family and business matters. The entire collection covers a period from 1874 to 1889.

    Major J.W. Young
From the Regimental History (A.P. Smith, 1867) John W. Young was born in Springfield, Otsego county, N. Y. He was reading law in that town, when he entered the service in September, 1861. One of the first companies mustered into the Otsego Regiment was from his native town. With this company he enlisted, and was very active in aiding its organization, and was afterwards chosen its Captain. He had no military knowledge, but his popularity among the boys secured him this honorable and responsible position. In January, 1862, his company was consolidated with the Seventy-sixth New York Volunteers, and he remained a member of it until he was mustered out of service, March fourteenth, 1865, having been in the service about three and a half years. The Regiment, as a Regiment, had been mustered out previous to this time, but at the time it was mustered out, he was a prisoner of war. At the battle of Antietam, September seventeenth, 1862, he had command of his Regiment, although he was then the eighth ranking Captain, all those outranking him being absent on account of sickness, wounds or capture. At Gettysburg, July first, 1863, he was wounded and taken prisoner. He remained a prisoner until the fifth, when he was left by the enemy, on account of the severity of his wounds. During the fourth of July, he lay in a house between the two opposing picket lines, and within hailing distance of either. Fortunately, however, the firing during the day was carried on with small arms only, the balls from which could not penetrate the walls of the brick house in which he lay.
