'Bush at War' reveals a young President's passion
Through A Glass Darkly, by John Myers, Internet Photojournalist
I just finished reading "Bush at War" by Bob Woodward, who cut his journalistic eye teeth bringing down another Republican president, the late, mostly unlamented Richard Nixon.
From my reading of the biographies by Robert Caro of Nixon's predecessor, the late President Lyndon Johnson, one would have to say LBJ was far crookeder than Nixon, but LBJ was dead and gone before the dirty political dealings of his life ever came to light.
But if you're expecting to find a Nixonian treatment of President George W. Bush in Woodward's latest book, you'll be disappointed. Woodward has either turned Republican or we have an entirely different type of President in office than has been widely reported.
Far from the image most pundits paint of "W" as an immature, fumbling, tongue-tied nitwit, Woodward tells the story of a young president who rises to the challenges of war.
Inside look at the war on terror
Woodward gives us an inside look at the first round of the war on terror inside the Bush administration, from Sept. 11, 2001, to the beginning rumbles of the war on Iraq.

88. In Memory Of John And Kate
In memory of two wonderful friends john and Kate, who died too young.
http://www.geocities.com/johnandkate_2000/
This site is dedicated to the memory of two of my best friends:
John Caruso (1962-1993), an American who grew up internationally like I did. John was not only one of the funniest people I have ever met but the most brilliant. Among his many talents, John spoke over eleven languages fluently.
John died of AIDS on May 14, 1993 at home in Severn, Maryland. and Caitlin (Kate) Bailey (1967-1994), from Kalamazoo, Michigan, who spent her last months in Brussels, Belgium (which was her second home outside of Kalamazoo). Kate was the most vibrant person I have ever known, her electrically fun presence was felt the moment she walked into any room. She was 5'2" but her personality was taller than tall.
Kate died on March 19, 1994 of accidental Carbon Monoxide poisoning at her appartment in Brussels, Belgium.
I met up with Kate's mother Leigh in New York in June, 2000. She brought me a wonderful album of photographs. Below are select photographs from the album, they may take a while to load, but worth the wait.

Vice Adm. Sir Horatio Nelson and the Nile The sudden swoop of a British fleet commanded by the bold young Vice Adm. Sir Horatio Nelson stunned the French naval force in Aboukir Bay in 1798, crushing General Napoleon Bonaparte's dreams for an Eastern empire. By John Woolford When General Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Mamelukes at the Battle of the Pyramids on July 21, 1798, he carried out only the first move in a complicated game. He was now the master of Egypt and in a matter of hours would occupy Cairo. That, however, was not the main object of this mission. The central goal was to sever Britain's communications with the East, destroy her trade and loosen her grip on India. Perhaps even a French occupation of part of Australia would be possible. To the young Corsican-born general, just coming into his stride in the wake of his brilliant campaign in northern Italy, the possibilities seemed to be infinite. "This little Europe is too small a field," Bonaparte supposedly said before setting out for Alexandria. "Great celebrity can be won only in the East."

ARTICLE JOHN DONNE, RICHARD CRASHAW, AND THE MYSTERY OF GOD’S GRACE
by R.V. Young John Donne Journal . Professor Anscombe fixed me with a steely gaze: “Henry Donne, his brother, was a martyr, but John Donne was an apostate ! We don’t like him very much at all.”
I got over it, eventually. But the apostasy of John Donne and its impact on the English recusant community have remained for me a compelling topic for reflection. John Donne (1572-1631) is among the very greatest devotional writers of both prose and verse in an age of great religious poetry and meditative literature; he is among the greatest English preachers in an age of great sermons. The tone and texture of his divine poems and prose meditations are far more Catholic than Protestant, and Donne was a life-long enemy of the Puritans who were the most vigorously Protestant party in the Church of England in the seventeenth century. Given his intensely Catholic background and his ambivalent attitude toward Protestantism, Donne provides an illuminating angle on the situation of Catholic recusants in Reformation England and a poignant reminder of the mysterious ways of Our Lord in the provision of grace.
Donne’s younger and less well-known contemporary, the poet Richard Crashaw (1612/13-1649), highlights the issue by furnishing an example of the process in reverse. Crashaw’s father William was a militantly anti-papist preacher and controversialist. The guardians of his son, who was orphaned as a small child, for some reason sent him to schools where he came under the influence of the growing high-church party, whose most prominent member was Charles I’s Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud. In the wake of the Puritan victory in the British Civil War, Richard Crashaw would find his way into the Catholic Church. Contemplating these two “Metaphysical” poets, who made opposing choices regarding the most important decision a man can make, Catholics today may wish to consider what human factors influence such choices, while remembering that the final outcome, for each of us, results from a convergence of our wills and the mystery of divine Providence.

A layman, raised Protestant. As a young man he converted to Catholicism, married, served as a catechist, and made his home a center of missionary activity. Captured, he was tortured and imprisoned for three years before being martyred in 1584.

Ven. John Finch
A martyr, b. about 1548; d. 20 April, 1584. He was a yeoman of Eccleston, Lancashire, and a member of a well-known old Catholic family, but he appears to have been brought up in schism. When he was twenty years old he went to London where he spent nearly a year with some cousins at Inner Temple. While there he was forcibly struck by the contrast between Protestantism and Catholicism in practice and determined to lead a Catholic life. Failing to find advancement in London he returned to Lancashire where he was reconciled to Catholic Church. He then married and settled down, his house becoming a centre of missionary work, he himself harbouring priests and aiding them in every way, besides acting as catechist. His zeal drew on him the hostility of the authorities, and at Christmas , 1581, he was entrapped into bringing a priest, George Ostliffe, to a place where both were apprehended. It was given out that Finch, having betrayed the priest and other Catholics, had taken refuge with the Earl of Derby, but in fact, he was kept in the earl's house as a prisoner, sometimes tortured and sometimes bribed in order to pervert him and induce him to give information. This failing, he was removed to the Fleet prison at Manchester and afterwards to the House of Correction. When he refused to go to the Protestant church he was dragged there by the feet, his head beating on the stones. For many months he lay in a damp dungeon, ill-fed and ill-treated, desiring always that he might be brought to trial and martyrdom. After three years' imprisonment, he was sent to be tried at Lancaster. There he was brought to trial with three priests on 18 April, 1584. He was found guilty and, 20 April, having spent the night in converting some condemned felons, he suffered with Ven. James Bell at Lancaster. The cause of his beatification with those of the other English Martyrs was introduced by decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, 4 Dec., 1886.

John Steinbeck claimed that he based Tortilla Flat on the "Arthurian cycle," the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (qtd. in Lisca 76). However, numerous parallels suggest that Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were additional influences. This is not to say that the stories are the same, or that Steinbeck "copied" Twain. Rather, the stories share particular details that, when considered together with the charm, humorous tone, and anecdotal nature of Tortilla Flat, show Steinbeck emulated Twain in writing. Two other critics also see connections between Twain and Steinbeck. In his essay "Steinbeck and Mark Twain," Sydney J. Krause discusses similarities between the lives and works of Steinbeck and Twain. He notes "relationshipsanalogues and similarities of ironic outlookthat exist between the two writers" (106).
