63. Rupert Of Deutz On The Gospel Of John: Introduction
The Fourth Gospel In The Twelfth Century Rupert Of Deutz On The Gospel Of john. A paper by Dr Abigail Ann young, University of Toronto.

The Fourth Gospel In The Twelfth Century: Rupert Of Deutz On The Gospel Of John
Contents This paper is based on my PhD thesis at the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto, 1983, written under the direction of the late Professor Walter Principe, CSB. I had originally been interested in Rupert, a traditional Benedictine, as an exemplary figure of pre-Scholastic mediaeval exegesis. Too often in looking at the pre-Scholastic period, we focus just on the factors which seem in retrospect to be proto-Scholastic and even among mediaevalists, the history of exegesis seldom gets as much attention as it deserves. Rupert rejected the values and interpretive concerns of those we now recognise as the forerunners of Scholasticism and strove to work within the thought-world of monastic and contemplative Scripture reading, assuredly the way the Bible was most often read in the Middle Ages. However, I experienced technical difficulties in re-working the thesis into something publishable. First, I kept ending up with something too long for an article, but too short for a book. I've also had difficulty in deciding whether the audience I wanted to reach was professional medievalists only or the much wider world of people interested in the study of the Bible, and attempts to write for both, since they have very different levels of prior knowledge, have been difficult. I've also become reluctant to spend more time on Rupert as my interests have now moved on, or rather, back, to my first love, Alexander of Hales, an extraordinary English Franciscan exegete at the University of Paris in the early thirteenth century, and his postilla, or lecture-series, on John. I expect that working on Alexander will fully occupy my spare time for quite awhile.

65. John Brown's Raid
In the winter of 185758, Brown collected a number of young men in that territory, including several of his sons, and, with the use of funds and arms that had been furnished for his Kansas operations, placed these men under military instruction.
http://www.civilwarhome.com/johnbrown.htm
John Brown's Raid
sine die, and Brown took his Kansas party to Ohio, where he disbanded them subject to call, but sending his Capt. John E. Cook, of Connecticut (who was subsequently executed), to stay at Harper's Ferry, Va., and make himself familiar with the surrounding country and its citizens, and especially with the negro slaves, for the information of his leader.
On October 10, 1859, from "Headquarters War Department, Provisional Army, Harper's Ferry," John Brown, commander-in-chief, issued his "General Order No. I," organizing "the divisions of the provisional army and the coalition," providing for company, battalion, regiment, brigade and general staff organization. It is probable that at the time of issuing this order Brown had with him, at the Kennedy farm, his whole band of followers, including his spy Cook, and there formulated his final plans of invasion; and that soon thereafter he removed to a schoolhouse nearer Harper's Ferry, the hundreds of carbines, pistols, spears or pikes, and a quantity of cartridges, powder, percussion caps, and other military supplies, that he had gathered for arming the negroes when they rose to insurrection in response to his call and movements.
News of these occurrences spread rapidly, and citizens and citizen soldiery, with arms, hastened from all the surrounding parts of Virginia and Maryland to resist this high-handed invasion of their homes and States. About 11 a.m., of the 17th, the Jefferson Guards, from Charlestown, arrived, soon followed by the Hamtramck and the Shepherdstown troop, from Shepherdstown, and Alburtis' company from Martinsburg. These, under the command of Col. R. A. Baylor, forced the insurgents within the armory enclosure, which they surrounded by a cordon of pickets. Brown then withdrew his men into the gate house, which he proceeded to loophole and fortify, taking with him ten of the most prominent of his Virginia and Maryland captives, which he termed "hostages," to insure the safety of his band. From openings in the building the insurgents fired upon all white people that came in sight.

    75. January 23 Saint
The story of the bishop who was dedicated to the poor, suited to children.
    http://www.tntt.org/vni/tlieu/saints/St0123.htm
January 23 ST. JOHN THE ALMSGIVER John was a dedicated Christian nobleman. He used his wealth and position to help poor people. After his wife passed away, John became a priest and bishop. In 608, he was consecrated the patriarch of Alexandria, Egypt. What could people expect of this man who now had such an important position? St. John went to his new ministry focused on healing the divisions among his people. He pledged himself to practice a "charity without limits." The first thing he did was ask for a complete list of his "masters." He was asked to explain. He meant the poor. When they were counted, the poor of Alexandria numbered 7,500. St. John pledged to be their personal protector. As patriarch, St. John proclaimed laws and issued reforms. He was respectful and kind, but firm. He devoted two days each week, Wednesday and Friday, to making himself available for anyone who wished to see him. People lined up and waited patiently for their turn. Some were rich. Some were homeless and destitute. All received the same respect and attention. When he found out that the church treasury had eighty thousand peices of gold, he divided it all among the hospitals and monasteries. He set up a system so that poor people received adequate money and means to support themselves. Refugees from neighboring areas were welcomed warmly. After the Persians had plundered Jerusalem, St. John sent money and supplies to the suffering people. He even sent Egyptian workmen to assist in rebuilding the churches there.

    m u s i c GIRLS AGAINST BOYS + THE YEAH YEAHS + THE PATTERN
    by John Young
    PopMatters Music Critic
e-mail this article I t was all Clash over the Echo Lounge's PA system on a Tuesday night. The debut album before the first band, The Drill Team, came on; Black Market Clash between band sets. This night had a four-band bill, all of whom are trying like hell to find some little Strummer or Jones in them, without having to write simple, hard-punching songs. For two of these bands, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and headlining Girls Against Boys, bass-overkill or bass-deficiency was one path to original feel. For The Drill Team and The Pattern, it was displaying a devotion to certain of their rock 'n' roll elders of recent vintage. In order of performance: The Drill Team This opening act had two long-haired, T-shirt 'n' jeans guys on bass and lead guitar, a girl drummer, and two Moby-pated hard-core guys as singer and rhythm guitarist respectively. Their sound has that same cross-up of intent and confusion knowing what they're doing doesn't explain why they're doing it, least of all to them. Their bass-dominated grooves were undecided at any speed for either the grunge floor or the mosh pit or both producing a twitch that used to be exciting thrash for SST bands of fifteen years ago. One song really got it together as a good set-up for Girls Against Boys, though: shrieking guitar solos deftly clawed out of the power chords, with intricate, hard-moving tempo shifts. Another song had a nice idea for a solo guitars all bent the same two notes for ninety seconds. A nice drone effect. The singer's stage patter used to seem cool, too: variations on "thanks a lot," sometimes amended with "here's another song."

The BIG Picture - an essay by John Young
John Young, one of America's premier astronauts, has always been known for his blunt and outspoken nature on the matters that mean the most to him. Fortunately for us, one of his primary loves is space exploration. He has written, IMHBCO, a brilliant case for its continuation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. The BIG Picture
Ways to Mitigate or Prevent Very Bad Planet Earth Events Discovery:

In the last 25 years of NASA exploration we have learned a lot about our Earth's relation to the Solar System. In particular, we have discovered that our place is dynamically evolving. This normal evolution will certainly produce bad events on Earth for humans. Historical Volcanic Activity:
    Historical Asteroid/Comet Impact Activity:
    Historical Solar Activity:

Can we count on the sun? Two hundred thousand year old Greenland ice cores show that the Earth's temperature varied between 3 and 5 degrees C in 20 years time. No doubt, those bad old Neanderthals were using too many CFC'S? Not likely. In recorded history, the 'Little Ice Age' was centered on solar activity when sunspots declined and the sun was quiet for about 70 years. Sunspots declined in 1615 and reached an all time low in 1670. What Can We Do?

    80. TWD -- Evolution And Creationism

    The Creation-Evolution Debate
"The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote."
Ambassador Kosh, Babylon 5 episode "Believers" If you're interested in evolutionary theory, sooner or later you're going to run into those who would deny evolution, for either personal or religious reasons. (A hundred and forty years of research has shown that there are no known scientific reasons for doubting evolutionary theory.) Most of these anti-evolutionists instead advocate some form of the doctrine known as creationism . They have some trouble understanding that the avalanche in favor of evolution started a century and a half ago, and the pebbles never really had a chance to change its course. As I accept evolutionary theory and reject creationism in all its forms, I've done a bit of debating with creationists of several different types over the last few years. What is creationism? Creationism is the idea that all forms of life, and particularly humans, were independently created by a willful act on the part of a deity or superpowerful entity. What's wrong with creationism? That depends on what form of creationism you're talking about. There are several forms of creationism, all different. None are really scientific, though not all are unscientific to the same degree.
