The fins are arranged to simulate the dorsal fins of a large Orca whale pod or a school of salmon. This artwork represents the ultimate in recycling...."From Swords into Plowshares". The artwork uses 22 fins placed at various angles and heights (ranging from four feet to twelve feet), and traverse about 500 feet in length. The work is located in Magnuson Park at Sand Point in Seattle. Magnuson Park has particular resonance as a site due to the former U.S. Navy Base at Sand Point which recently became a Seattle Park. Sited there, the artwork serves as a positive historic monument of the Navy's involvement on the site. This artwork is also one of the first memorials in the United States to honor those men and women who served our country during the Cold War.

John Glenn deserves to fly and so does John Young
By Roger Guillemette
Previously published in FLORIDA TODAY Space Online
January 20, 1998 TIVERTON, R.I. - "Godspeed, John Glenn."
These words still send chills down the spines of NASA officials and ordinary citizens alike. They epitomize the spirit and courage exhibited by our space pioneers - a nebulous set of noble characteristics that author Tom Wolfe labeled 'The Right Stuff.'
All of America - in fact, all of the Free World - held its collective breath as a 40-year-old 'Clean Marine' and former 'Name That Tune' champion strapped himself on top of a flying fuel tank they called the Atlas, a rocket with a nasty habit of blowing up almost as often as it reached orbit.
Mention the phrase to any American over the age of 45 and almost all can tell you their exact whereabouts and what they were doing when those historic words were first spoken on Feb. 20, 1962. Along with 'The Eagle Has Landed', the term has become the maxim that defines the glory days of space exploration - even today, a FLORIDA TODAY colleague proclaims 'Godspeed, John Glenn' every time an Atlas rocket rises majestically off the launch pad - a 'real' rocket, as he likes to call it.
John Glenn only circled the Earth three times and spent most of his five hours in orbit worrying if the heatshield on his Friendship 7 capsule has become dislodged - if so, he would have faced almost certain death during re-entry into the atmosphere. Glenn and his spacecraft survived and he returned as a instant celebrity - the most recognizable face on the planet. Hailed as a national hero, Glenn was transformed into The American Who Finally Equaled The Soviets.

Manchester Pride I sent this text to a friend this morning...
*Obviously not all soldiers are wife beaters obviously
The news story was from here That there was UK Army and RAF guys in Manchester's Gay Pride marching. I don't think that would ever happen in the US. Is Don't ask, Don't tell still going on?
If companies that need new applicants to come and join, they have to appeal to everyone. The Military needs people and if gays want to join, they need to attract them! Military guys are gorgeous in uniform. I wouldn't join but if they can attract gay people who want to join, that's good right?
I know that most gays in the military are still totally in the closet as there is institutional homophobia! I once had a friend who was a fireman and was totally in the closet because its such a homophobic job and he would have died if any of his colleagues found out about him. He loved his job though, but just kept it quiet.
The Police especially in London, really need people to join up and are trying to welcome any race, sex or sexuality. I have always felt they were good at that, but some people say there is homophobia and racism in the police force. There is all those stories about racism and abuse to people who are Indian or another ethnic minority.
