BY PETER ROSE There is something distinctly quirky about the English. They applaud good losers with more relish than ostentatious winners, and celebrate momentous defeats like the charge of the Light Brigade with as much honour as any great victory. So it is hardly surprising that larger-than-life, unsavoury characters capture the popular imagination more than William Pitt the Younger, Charles Darwin, or John and Charles Wesley.
Dick Turpin provides a good example. Most people think of him as a daring highwayman who made a dashing ride from London to York on his faithful mare, Black Bess, in less than 24 hours. But in countless towns along the A1 motorway-still known as the Great North Road-you will come across pubs where Turpin allegedly spent the night, watered his horse, or ate lunch. So much for the non-stop ride!
In the area around Epping Forest, east of London; in Hounslow to the west; Enfield, Finchley, and Watford to the north, you will still find pubs called 'The Black Horse' in honour of Turpin's legendary mount. One Victorian writer recalled being shown a five-bar gate where Black Bess' hoof prints remained clearly visible more than a century after the apocryphal ride.

Tom, Dick and Harry pay a visit to Duke Of York's
Joe, Stephen and Mark McGann, with Ray Cooney (bottom right) Joe, Stephen and Mark McGann, three of the four actor brothers of the McGann clan (Paul is the other) are to team up as another trio of brothers, Tom, Dick and Harry in Ray Cooney’s rumbustuous farce at the Duke Of York’s theatre in August. Tom, Dick and Harry starts as Tom (Joe McGann) and his wife attempt to persuade an unnecessarily officious social worker of their suitability to adopt children. Their efforts to seem caring and responsible are thwarted, however, by the behaviour of Tom’s brothers Dick (Stephen McGann) and Harry (Mark McGann), who between them manage to become embroiled in scrapes involving random corpses, the local constabulary, a smattering of illegal immigrants and, perhaps inevitably, The Russian mafia. The McGann’s have been stalwarts of the UK acting scene for well over 20 years, although this is the first time that they’ve appeared together on the West End stage since 1982, when they starred in Yakety Yak. Between them, they have appeared in a host of legendary television series, ranging from Emmerdale to The Upper Hand, and they starred together in the 1995 TV drama, The Hanging Gale.

Retirement of Dick Reid
December 2004 One of York’s most distinguished craftsmen is hanging up his mallet and chisels. After more than 40 years running his famous wood and stone carving business in York, Dick Reid has decided to call it a day.
York is full of examples of Dick’s craftsmanship, the most prominent being the coats of arms he has carved for each of York’s medieval guild halls, and at the Kings Manor. The quality of his work carried his reputation, and that of the team of craftsmen and women he has built up around him, across the country, and into Ireland and America too. His most prestigious work features in the royal palaces. After the great fire at Windsor Castle he was appointed supervisor to the Royal household for the restoration of the Carlton House Trophies, and for eight years he worked on the large restoration at Spencer House.
In addition to his personal work in carving and restoration he has made a major contribution to training and bringing on younger talent and in influencing the training of carvers. Many outstanding carvers who have established their own businesses around the city and beyond, developed their skills in Dick’s workshop and under his supervision.
His contribution to the city extends beyond his work. He is a past Governor of the Merchant Adventurers, holds a doctorate of the University, is President of the York Decorative and Fine Arts Society, and is a Vice-President of both the York Georgian Society and of the Consortium.

The Facts About Cheney and Halliburton
The vice president has a strong defense. eople around Vice President Dick Cheney are growing increasingly frustrated with reports that he's gone into virtual hiding to avoid questions about his time as CEO of Halliburton. "It's absurd," says one administration source, noting that Cheney has appeared at several public events in recent weeks (he has one today, too, in Washington). While reporters complain that Cheney stays away from the press at those events — most of his appearances are speeches where he doesn't answer questions — his defenders say that's the way he's always worked. "He doesn't go down to the briefing room and take questions," says the administration source.
But why not do a traditional sit-down interview to clear the air about Halliburton, now that there is a Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry into the company's accounting practices while Cheney was its chief executive? "The Office of Vice President cannot and will not work on Halliburton issues," says the source. "The vice president has not been contacted by the SEC, and it would not be appropriate for him to comment on a pending SEC investigation."

I've read quite a few autobiographies, and this is by far the most creative and at least one of the bravest. I thought it was brilliant, and it's something you can read again and again and still find things you missed. The most disturbing part to me was the period when he left Bewitched.

Dick York Was The Better Darrin Because Dick Sargeant Was Gay Dick York Was The Better Darrin Because Dick Sargeant Was Gay That's my opinion on this eternal TV Land question, anyway. I always thought the chemistry between Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery was better, and that Dick Sargeant has a telltale fussiness that just didn't work for the role. Now via Exclamation Mark I've found a great fan site, Bewitched - Harpies Bizarre , that quantifies my suspicions: There was a sharp drop in demonstrated affection between Darrin and Samantha (affection being measured by counting the number of kisses exchanged per episode) after the fifth season. The first season there was an average of 2.03 kisses per episode. This climbed to 2.97 in the fourth season, but the sixth, seventh, and eighth seasons averaged 1.93, 1.21, and .062 respectively. During the York years, the kisses averaged 2.57 per episode, and less than half that number (1.25) were exchanged during the Sargent years. I should probably add "and because Dick Sargeant wasn't a good enough actor to act the part of a normal straight American husband of the 1960's". Contrast him to Rock Hudson, the he-man actor who shocked everybody when they found out he was gay. Old Rock shocked everybody, yet nobody ever gives him any credit for his acting ability in relation to his long-kept secret.

Tom and his wife are adopting a baby. It's the happiest day of their lives - or it would have been if Tom's brothers, Dick and Harry, hadn't decided to help. The result of Dick and Harry's 'assistance' produces two illegal immigrants, a dead body and a vanload of contraband cigarettes.
With the arrival of the Supervisor from the Adoption Agency and the local Police Constable, Tom's ingenuity is stretched to the limit. But things couldn't get worse... or could they? The ever-helpful plans of Dick and Harry continue to go haywire and they further lumber Tom with a Russian Mafia mobster and a reality TV programme. Then it starts to get complicated!!
So begins the hilarious new comedy from the legendary Cooney comedy stable. Ray Cooney is one of the UK's most successful comedy playwrights, whose many writing credits include the hugely successful Out of Order and Run For Your Wife. Michael Cooney's theatre credits include Cash On Delivery and he is also a well-known film screenwriter having written hits such as Identity, which stars John Cusack.
The cast also features Louise Jameson (Eastenders), Hannah Waterman (Eastenders) and Mark Wingett (The Bill).
