Muroc Field
After WW2, Chuck Yeager was assigned to be a test pilot at Muroc Field in California. Muroc was high up in the California desert, a barren place except for sagebrush and Joshua Trees. The main attraction of Muroc was Rogers Dry Lake, a flat expanse that was covered with a couple inches of water in the winter, and dried out hard and flat in the spring. A natural landing field, with miles of good surface in every direction. In 1946, the whole place was off-limits, a top secret Army base, developing jet and rocket planes. And there was almost nothing there - two simple hangars, some fuel pumps, one concrete runway, and a few shacks. In many ways, Muroc was fighter pilot Heaven in the late '40s: the run-down, Quonset-hut facilities didn't attract many visits from the Army Air Force top brass, and there wasn't much to do there but fly, and drink and drive fast cars. Pancho Barnes' "Fly Inn" was the pilots' favorite watering hole.
Breaking the Sound Barrier
One of the great unknowns of the time was the so-called "sound barrier." Planes like the British Meteor jets that approached the speed of sound (760MPH at sea level, 660 MPH at 40,000 feet) had encountered severe buffeting of the controls. At that time, no one knew for sure whether an airplane could exceed "Mach 1," the speed of sound. A British pilot, Geoffrey de Havilland, had died trying. The U.S. Army was determined to find out first.

    Yeager, Chuck
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Yeager, Chuck , born in 1923, American test pilot and United States Air Force officer. Yeager is best known for being the first aviator to fly faster than the speed of sound. Charles Elwood Yeager was born in Myra, West Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force after high school in 1941 and served as a flight officer during World War II (1939-1945). He was commissioned as a reserve flight officer in 1943 and became a pilot in the fighter command of the Eighth Air Force stationed in England. He flew 64 missions over Europe and shot down 13 German aircraft. Yeager's courage was put to the test when his own plane was shot down during a mission over Germany, but with the aid of the French underground, he escaped capture and returned to his unit. After the war, he became a flight instructor and a test pilot, securing a regular commission as a captain in 1947. Yeager was chosen from several volunteers to test-fly the secret, experimental X-1 aircraft, built by the Bell Aircraft Company. The Bell X-1 was designed to test the capabilities of the human pilot and fixed-wing aircraft against the severe aerodynamic stresses of flight near the speed of sound, and to determine if a straight-wing plane could fly faster than the speed of sound (approximately 1223 km/h, or approximately 760 mph, in air at sea level). No one knew whether a pilot could successfully control a plane under the battering effects of the shock waves produced as the plane's speed neared Mach 1 (

Chuck Yeager
Brigadier General Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yeager (born February 13 Myra, West Virginia) is an American World War II ace and test pilot. Charles Yeager achieved the rank of Brigadier General in the Air Force. He is most famous for being the first person to travel faster than Mach 1, the speed of sound, in level flight. On October 14 , Yeager broke the sound barrier flying the Bell X-1 at an altitude of 45,000 feet. The X-1 was an experimental rocket plane, nicknamed the Glamorous Glennis after Yeager's wife. This aircraft is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution 's National Air And Space Museum Yeager's career started when he signed up to join the military in 1939. On his first flight, he actually got sick but soon learned to love flying. During the Second World War, Yeager distinguished himself by becoming the first American pilot to become an ace (one who has shot down five enemy aircraft) in one day. He served in the Air Force all the way through the Vietnam War . He never did go to college and often was modest about his background but is considered to be one of the most talented pilots that ever served the United States Yeager went on to break other records for speed and altitude.

Brigadier General Charles E. Yeager
United States Air Force (Retired) At The White House
Washington, D.C.
On
Wednesday, 8 December 1976
At 1200 Hours The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, December 23, 1975, has awarded in the name of The Congress, a Special Congressional Silver Medal to Brigadier General Charles E. Yeager United States Air Force (Retired) for service as set forth in the following CITATION: For conspicuous gallantry and total disregard for his personal safety on October 14, 1947 as pilot of the XS-1 research aircraft. On this date, Brigadier General (then Captain) Yeager advanced aerospace science a quantum step by proving that an aircraft could be flown at supersonic speeds. He dispelled for all time the mythical "sound barrier" and set the stage for unprecedented aviation advancement. Through his selfless dedication to duty and his heroic challenge of the unknown, General Yeager performed inestimable service to the Nation far above and beyond the call of duty and brought great credit upon himself and the United States of America.
