AcePilots Main Page The Forum Eighth Air Force Aces Page Yeager Page 2 ... X-15 Chuck Yeager's accomplishments as an ace in WWII have been overshadowed by his achievements as a test pilot, but his fighter pilot experiences were remarkable on their own. An eighteen-year old West Virgina country boy, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1941 and shot down eleven (and a half!) German planes, including two Me-262 jets. He was also shot down over France, evaded, joined the Maquis, and made his way back to England via Spain. Somehow he persuaded the brass to let him continue flying fighter missions in Europe, contrary to policy. All of this by the age of twenty-two. Born in 1923, son of Albert Hal Yeager (a staunch Republican, so firm in his party loyalties that he once refused to shake President Harry Truman's hand), Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager grew up in Myra, on the Mud River in West Virgina. His dirt-poor youth was filled with hillbilly themes that sound romantic today, but probably weren't much fun at the time: making moonshine, eating cornmeal mush three times a day, shooting squirels for dinner, chasing rats out of the kitchen, going barefoot all summer, butchering hogs, and stealing watermelons. At an early age Chuck could do well at anything requiring manual dexterity or math: ping-pong, shooting, auto mechanics. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps

The first of the rocket-powered research aircraft, the X-1 (originally designated the XS-1), was a bullet-shaped airplane that was built by the Bell Aircraft Company for the US Air Force and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).
The mission of the X-1 was to investigate the transonic speed range (speeds from just below to just above the speed of sound) and, if possible, to break the "sound barrier". The XS-1 program not only proved that humans could go beyond the speed of sound, it reinforced the understanding that technological barriers could be overcome. Many structural and aerodynamic advances were pioneered by the original XS-1s, including extremely thin, yet exceptionally strong wing sections, supersonic fuselage configurations, control system requirements, powerplant compatibility, and cockpit environment. For the first time in a transonic-capable aircraft, an all-moving stabilizer was utilized. The flights of the XS-1's opened up a new era in aviation.

The 357th Fighter Group was credited with shooting down 609 1/2 enemy aircraft in only 15 months, a pace no other fighter group equaled. The 357th also produced 42 Aces (pilots with five or more victories in the air), more than any other group. Bud was the leading Ace of the 363rd Fighter Squadron with 16 1/4 victories. At 83, Bud still flies a P-51, restored exactly as his "Old Crow" at air shows and other events, with lifelong friend and fellow 363rd Fighter Squadron member, General Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager. On October 14, 1947, Yeager became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound, piloting the Bell X-1 rocket plane to a level flight speed of about 670 miles per hour. Yeager also set a world speed record when he flew the Air Force's Bell X-1A rocket plane at 1,650 miles per hour, or over 2 ½ times the speed of sound. He served on the presidential commission to investigate the Challenger disaster in 1986.

Reproduced by Permission. For many people, Chuck Yeager is a true hero in the strictest definition of the word. Throughout his career, Yeager displayed distinguished courage and performed several extraordinarily brave deeds, although he only considered such acts as following his duty. Many people recognize Yeager as the first person to break the sound barrier, but that feat is only one of his many important achievements. Without a doubt, Yeager is the world's most famous test pilot not only because of the records he set, but also because of his determination, his ability to remain calm in difficult situations, and his ability to quickly analyze problems and find a solution. He is one of the "toughest" pilots, both mentally and physically, in aviation history, and few have ever matched his piloting skills. Charles "Chuck" E. Yeager was born on February 13, 1923, in Myra, West Virginia. The son of a gas driller, Chuck grew up working with a wide variety of mechanical devices. He could readily take apart an engine and put it back together without difficulty. A few months after his high school graduation, Yeager joined the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Yeager, Chuck , born in 1923, American test pilot and United States Air Force officer. Yeager is best known for being the first aviator to fly faster than the speed of sound. Charles Elwood Yeager was born in Myra, West Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force after high school in 1941 and served as a flight officer during World War II (1939-1945). He was commissioned as a reserve flight officer in 1943 and became a pilot in the fighter command of the Eighth Air Force stationed in England. He flew 64 missions over Europe and shot down 13 German aircraft. Yeager's courage was put to the test when his own plane was shot down during a mission over Germany, but with the aid of the French underground, he escaped capture and returned to his unit. After the war, he became a flight instructor and a test pilot, securing a regular commission as a captain in 1947. Yeager was chosen from several volunteers to test-fly the secret, experimental X-1 aircraft, built by the Bell Aircraft Company. The Bell X-1 was designed to test the capabilities of the human pilot and fixed-wing aircraft against the severe aerodynamic stresses of flight near the speed of sound, and to determine if a straight-wing plane could fly faster than the speed of sound (approximately 1223 km/h, or approximately 760 mph, in air at sea level). No one knew whether a pilot could successfully control a plane under the battering effects of the shock waves produced as the plane's speed neared Mach 1 (
