TRAMA E COMMENTO

  • "Windtalkers" John Woo's ultraviolent paean to the Navajo "code talkers" who fought with the Marines in World War II takes his Hollywood dream to new heights. By Stephanie Zacharek Fans of John Woo 's Hong Kong movies have often had a hard time reconciling them with the work he's done in America. Compared with sometimes overly polished entertainments like "Face/Off" (1997) or "Mission: Impossible 2" (2000), Woo's bloodier, more passionate Hong Kong pictures seem to have come not just from another country but another world. You could tell from pictures like the exhilarating "Hard Boiled" (1992) and the devastatingly operatic "Bullet in the Head" (1990) that Woo was deeply in love with the tradition of the Hollywood gangster picture, so deeply in love that he was working in a dream version of the old Hollywood in other words, not a long-gone time and place, but one that never existed at all.

The Films of John Woo and the Art of Heroic Bloodshed
John Woo was born in 1946 in Mainland China, the son of Christian parents. At the age of five, his family moved to Hong Kong to escape the Cultural Revolution, where they struggled for a number of years, having to live in the streets for a short period of time. In those days, his mother would take him to the theater to watch Western cinema, which inspired the young John Woo to be a film-maker. After leaving high school, he hooked up a group of students who shared a passion for film. They would screen European arthouse films, discuss what they had seen, and eventually, they began to make their own films. In 1969, Woo got his first big break as a script supervisor in Cathay Studios. He followed that up in 1971 with a move up to assistant director in the famous Shaw Studios, where he was mentored by Chang Cheh, who taught him the art of filming action and the importance of editing. His directorial debut came in 1973 with "The Young Dragons", a kung-fu actioner that featured two elements of what would later become the John Woo style: the dynamic fluid camera work and the elaborately choreographed action sequences (choreographed by the future Jackie Chan). On the strength of this first effort, Woo moved onto Golden Harvest where he started off with martial arts films and a filmed Chinese opera, but then became a comedy director with the success of "The Pilferer's Progress", a comedy that starred Hong Kong comedian Ricky Hui. However, by the mid-1980s, Woo was running out of steam. His latest films were duds in the box office and it looked as though he was a has-been. It was at this time that he sought funding for a pet project, "A Better Tomorrow", which caught the attention of producer/director Tsui Hark (who came to Hollywood earlier this year for "

    Being John Woo
How a one-time genius of the Hong Kong ganster pic brought his brand of "nothing to believe in" to Hollywood, and why we ended up with Mission: Impossible 2 instead of A Better Tomorrow.
by Leah Middlebrook Now that we've all seen The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , we're getting familiar with films that use Hong Kong filmmakers' weird, wild ways of exploring the unexpected, whether it's heroes who sail high over forests of swaying bamboo, brandishing swords against demons and villains, or sleek, normal-looking folks who, with a quick duck and turn, do a no-hands cartwheel and whip out the heat to plunge us all into a breathless three minutes of steel-plated manic violence. The late-90's/2000 iteration of Hong Kong, USA, is long on choreography, so it is possible to miss the fact that Hollywood's look to the east for inspiration (and fuel for a sagging box office) began a while ago, when studio heads cottoned on to the comedic success of actors like Jackie Chan, and also, especially, to a new group of films, charismatic and seductive as all get out. The front man was a tall, broad-shouldered, dark-eyed actor named Chow Yun Fat, but the eyes and the brains of the organization were his smoking director, the all- action maestro, John Woo.

06/14/2002 - Updated 02:56 AM ET 'Windtalkers' intersperses action with contemplation By Mike Clark, USA TODAY A Nicolas Cage character battles mental demons again in John Woo's long-delayed Windtalkers Hard-Boiled or Hollywood's Face/Off (a Woo movie where Cage wasn't restrained). Read more below Video Both mild modifications in style seem in keeping with a World War II epic that is half-visceral but also half-contemplative. Windtalkers deals with a specialized communication by code in a fact-based story whose screen telling is overdue. It further operates in a rarefied, though not quite unique screen genre, which includes 1951's Go for Broke! and 1995's The Tuskegee Airmen Windtalkers
(out of four) Stars: Nicolas Cage, Christian Slater, Adam Beach, Peter Stormare, Noah Emmerich, Frances O'Connor Director: John Woo Distributor: MGM Rating: R for graphic violence and language Even if Cage could understand it, he might have trouble hearing it. His left ear has been maimed in battle, leaving him with balance problems that contribute to his apparent depression.

John Woo has been in the film business for over thirty years. His career had seen setbacks, turning points and major success long before he established himself as a top notch Hollywood director. John Woo was born 1946 as Ng Yu-Sum in Guangzhou, a town in the chinese province of Canton. Five years later, the chinese revolution coming to its peak, the Christian family relocated to Hongkong for religious reasons. The father, suffering from tubercolosis, couldn't work as a scholar and left the chores of taking care to his wife, who struggled to support the family. After the big fire of 1953 had destroyed their home, the Woos lived on the streets for a while, but finally managed to settle down. Woo's first encounters with western cinema date back to his early childhood. Whenever there was a chance, his mother took him to the movies. The teenage boy's education at Lutheran Matteo-Ricci-College was secured by an American family that provided school fees through a charity program. After High School, Woo joined a youth theater club set up by the editor of China Student Weekly in the late sixties. The club organized screenings of european movies no regular cinema would show. Through the group's watching and discussing film, Woo came to shoot several 8mm and 16mm experimental shorts between 1968 and 1970.
An adolescent Woo in his own 1968 short film "Accidentally" Lacking the funds for film school, Woo started his career in film business in 1969, working as script-supervisor for Hong Kong based Cathay Studios. Two years later he moved shop to Shaw Bros., then among the biggest film studios of the city. He soon worked as assistant director to the great Chang Cheh. The master of martial arts cinema heavily influenced the young Woo.
