Comincio subito con una polemica: non capisco ancora chi va' a vedere un film di questo regista e si aspetta trame complicate, verosimiglianze, punti di vista dei nemici, eccetera. Non e' quello il cinema di Woo: il suo e' un modo di rappresentare la realtà barocco, pirotecnico e contemporaneamente intimo e sofferto: chi non si e' accorto che tutto questo e' presente anche (se non più del solito) in "Windtalkers" non ha capito l'essenza del pensiero di questo regista; John Woo non e' solo "colombe" e "due pistole in due mani", John Woo e' soprattutto onore, amicizia virile, a scapito di tutto il resto, amore compreso. Ditemi: cosa manca di questo nel suo ultimo film? Né à Canton en 1948, il déménage avec sa famille dès 1951 pour Hong Kong. Après le terrible incendie de 1953 qui ravage une grande partie de la ville, sa famille vit dans la rue pendant presque un an, puis s'installe dans un quartier pauvre. Il entre à 9 ans dans une école luthérienne, entame des études au Matteo Ricci College en 1967 et participe à la formation d'une troupe de théâtre, la "Chinese Student Weekley Theatre company". Il s'oriente finalement vers le cinéma (après avoir voulu se consacrer à la religion) et rejoint la compagnie Cathay où il réalise des courts-métrages. En 1971, il intègre la très célèbre Shaw Brothers et devient assistant du non moins célèbre Chang Cheh Farewell Buddy

Tommaso Tocci, 12 Febbraio 2004: Inadatto Paycheck di John Woo Verrebbe da chiedersi perché Woo, insieme a Terence Chang, ancora accetti di dirigere progetti già impacchettati, pronti da scartare senza poter in alcun modo incidere sulla sostanza del film. Ma a porsi questa domanda sono rimasti in pochissimi, dopo che molti della già esigua schiera di ammiratori del regista cinese si sono ricreduti, chi prima chi dopo, nell'arco dei suoi dieci anni hollywoodiani. "Paycheck" sembra quindi il definitivo addio (che secondo molti va fatto risalire ad almeno un paio di film fa) all'opera e all'ingegno di un regista che ha contribuito a cambiare prima il cinema di Honk Kong e poi un settore di quello americano.
