46. Similarities Between Homer's Iliad And John Woo's FaceOff
Article claiming a number of similarities between the works. By Matt Tabler.

A Study of the Similarities Between Homer’s Iliad and John Woo’s FaceOff
Matt Tabler
The eternal epic of the Iliad has stood the test of time and still applies to the lives and characters of people today. Homer's Iliad is a story about how one man's anger can led to glory and great honor. FaceOff’s Sean Archer walks a similar path to find this achievement. The characters, plot, symbolism in FaceOff are a modern version of Homer’s great epic, the Iliad. Greek mythology includes numerous characters and the various fates they lived. In the Iliad, Homer defines his characters by their personal traits and fate. For example, the Iliad’s hero Achilles personal character is defined by the respect he demands, his status in society, and his strength in battle. His fate according to the gods involves a choice between two different fates. The first is to live a long, peaceful life without honor and second entails achieving great honor and dying shortly thereafter. FaceOff employs a similar method to define its characters. In FaceOff, the characters such as Castor Troy, Sean Archer, Pollux Troy, Adam, and Eve all have personal characteristics that make them unique and gave them an inevitable fate. Achilles in the Iliad and Sean Archer in FaceOff are similar because they are the main characters and heroes of the story. Achilles was half-man and half-god. Sean Archer’s name represents this similarity in that Sean is symbolic of a human and Archer is symbolic of a god. Their characters are remarkably similar because they have a great desire for glory regardless of how long they live. Archer said to Troy, “I don’t care if I live or die, and you do.” This quotation exemplifies the anger of the hero and clarifies that he will do absolutely anything for honor and revenge. The names

This issue, devoted entirely to Hong Kong cinema, has been used as course material in university film studies classes and has been cited in several scholarly articles. Long out of print, the entire issue is now available online. See the table of contents below. A Better Tomorrow? American Masochism and Hong Kong Action Films
John Woo, one of Hong Kong's most famous and respected action directors, has long been a cult favorite in the United States. Known for his breathtakingly choreographed action sequences featuring balletic shoot-outs and spurting exit wounds, Woo's films are also often tragic and sentimental, engaging with themes of loyalty and honor and the place of the loner hero in a world full of corruption and violence. A Better Tomorrow (1986), hailed by many as the film that reinvented the Hong Kong action genre, broke box-office records in Hong Kong, relaunched Woo's career (he had been making moderately successful comedies and musicals since the mid-1970s), and introduced him to fans in the West. Less than ten years later Woo has left Hong Kong and moved to Hollywood.

Teresa Chang: Terese Mo
Detective Chan: Philip Chan
Mr. Woo: John Woo
Chow Yun Fat ( The Replacement Killers ) plays the role of inspector Yuen, a man who has decided to crack down once and for all the syndicate of Hong Kong-based arms dealers. After months of undercover investigation the situation escalates, criminals and innocent people get killed and, above all, inspector Yuen has to start his investigation all over again. Yuen realizes that there is still an undercover agent working for the police department. His boss gets secret messages through musical notes delivered with bunches of flowers sent to a former girlfriend of Yuen's. The melody is a hidden code for his superior. The undercover agent Tony (Tony Leung) works for both sides but begins to chase the gangsters with Yuen. A showdown in a hospital garantees a lot of action. The quality of film-making is equal to Hollywood productions, especially on the action and esthetic level. But the story - as always with John Wood - is very thin. The plot and the characters are too simple. What saves the film is a great actor: Chow Yun Fat. What a pity that this man is not fluent (yet) in English. He could become a Hollywood superstar.

Face/Off

BULLET IN THE HEAD
(Die xue jie tou / Bullet in the head / A bullet in the head) HK 1990 di John Woo (Yusen Wu, a volte accreditato come Ng Yu Sum o Ng Yu Chen) con Tony Leung (Chiu Wai), Jackie Cheung (Hok Yau), Waise Lee (Chi Hung), Simon Yam (Tat Wah), Yolinda Yan (Cho Sin), Fennie Yuen (Kit Ying).

60. The Films Of John Woo And The Art Of Heroic Bloodshed By Anthony Leong From Medi
This is a retrospective of the films of john woo, who introduced the world to the Heroic Bloodshed genre of Hong Kong action movies.
http://www.mediacircus.net/johnwoo.html
The Films of John Woo and the Art of Heroic Bloodshed
John Woo was born in 1946 in Mainland China, the son of Christian parents. At the age of five, his family moved to Hong Kong to escape the Cultural Revolution, where they struggled for a number of years, having to live in the streets for a short period of time. In those days, his mother would take him to the theater to watch Western cinema, which inspired the young John Woo to be a film-maker. After leaving high school, he hooked up a group of students who shared a passion for film. They would screen European arthouse films, discuss what they had seen, and eventually, they began to make their own films. In 1969, Woo got his first big break as a script supervisor in Cathay Studios. He followed that up in 1971 with a move up to assistant director in the famous Shaw Studios, where he was mentored by Chang Cheh, who taught him the art of filming action and the importance of editing. His directorial debut came in 1973 with "The Young Dragons", a kung-fu actioner that featured two elements of what would later become the John Woo style: the dynamic fluid camera work and the elaborately choreographed action sequences (choreographed by the future Jackie Chan). On the strength of this first effort, Woo moved onto Golden Harvest where he started off with martial arts films and a filmed Chinese opera, but then became a comedy director with the success of "The Pilferer's Progress", a comedy that starred Hong Kong comedian Ricky Hui. However, by the mid-1980s, Woo was running out of steam. His latest films were duds in the box office and it looked as though he was a has-been. It was at this time that he sought funding for a pet project, "A Better Tomorrow", which caught the attention of producer/director Tsui Hark (who came to Hollywood earlier this year for "
