WONG KAR-WAI TRIBUTE
Perhaps the only fixed points around which everything revolves are nostalgia and memory: this guardian of emotions. By directing the endless adventures of the heart, the convulsions of a love which is often extinguished before it is even born, Wong Kar-wai talks in a fundamental way about the individualÕs relation to experience, about the domination of the past over the present, about the "elimination" of identity, about intimacy through distance (the distance of the gaze), about memory (as stationary time) and about time (as a continuous flow), about the weight of memory and catharsis, and about liberation from the bonds of the past.
An event (experience) and its reverberations, and its reflections in a person's memory: it is nostalgia which Wong is filming and it is from its domino that the film's heroes are called upon to escape. As they sink into a deeply subjective universe, where the experience and the memory of nostalgia imprisons their existence, they struggle to express their emotions as clearly as they can, externalizing all the tempests, all the troubles of the heart, and confessing the passions of the soul. It is not surprising therefore, that each of Wong's films invariably ends in a confession. The character who, almost silent throughout the film, has suffered the torments and suffering of love, is now freed through the act of confession: Maggie Cheung as Peach Blossom (in

The UK premiere was at the Odeon, Leicester Square, London, as part of a special gala screening for the London Film Festival, on 29 October 2004. Though I didn't possess tickets, I went along to watch the arrivals... it turned out only WKW arrived (i.e. I didn't see any of the main stars) and I picked a bad spot (he got out the other side of the car). Anyway, here is the best shot I could take (yeah, it was pretty bad). He's the guy with the shades in the middle of the picture facing the left.

Peter Brunette
Exploring Wong Kar-wai's groundbreaking use of sound and visual technique to create a new form of cinema Wong Kar-wai traces this immensely exciting director's perennial themes of time, love, and loss, and examines the political implications of his films, especially concerning the handover of former British colony Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China. This book is the first in any language to cover all of Wong's work, from his first film, As Tears Go By, to his most recent, the still unreleased . It also includes his best-known, highly honored films, Chungking Express, Happy Together, and above all, In the Mood for Love. Most importantly, Peter Brunette describes the ways in which Wong's supremely visual films attempt to create a new form of cinema by relying on stunning, suggestive visual images and audio tracks to tell their story, rather than on traditional notions of character, dialogue, and plot. The question of Wong Kar-wai's use of genre film techniques in art films is also explored in depth. A volume in the Contemporary Film Directors series, edited by James Naremore

DESCRIPTION (back to top) This, the first book-length study of Hong Kong cult director Wong Kar-wai, provides an overview of his career and in-depth analyses of his seven feature films to date. The study also takes an intriguing look at Wong's commercials for the likes of Motorola, BMW, and Lacoste and at his music video for DJ Shadow. Stephen Teo probes Wong's cinematic and literary influencesfrom Martin Scorsese and Alfred Hitchcock to Manuel Puig and Haruki Murakamiyet shows how Wong transcends them all. This comprehensive and thoroughly accessible study confirms Wong's position as the star of the Hong Kong-global nexus and as a postmodern exemplar of world cinema. Originally planned under the title Summer in Beijing , this evocative drama continues the string of Wong Kar-wai masterpieces named after pop standards (e.g., Happy Together ). Though the director already enjoyed a solid arthouse and cult reputation, In the Mood for Love garnered his widest mainstream acclaim thanks to its dizzying atmosphere and the star power of its two leads, a period dressed pairing made in movie heaven. In 1962 Hong Kong, newspaper man Chow (Tony Leung) and his wife move into an apartment where another couple by chance is also settling in down the hall. Left alone to unpack due to his wife's perpetual absence, Chow strikes up a silent rapport with the other couple's female half, Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung), a secretary whose husband also leaves her constantly in solitude. They pass each other on the stairs and in the hall, but significant clues lead to an encounter in a noodle shop where they realizes their respective spouses are having an affair. The tentative friendship which blossoms between them, indicating a potential for passion which may never erupt. The succulent, dreamy air of

LondonNet's Cinema and Film Guide Interview with Wong Kar-Wai
Mixing with In The Mood For Love, SARS and four of Asian cinema's top female stars, Wong Kar-Wai divulges why his newest film, 2046, is an expression of Hong Kong's broken promises and regret.
View Trailer
You started making 2046 before In the Mood For Love. Why did it take so long to finish?
At what point did the two films become linked?

It's because of the room numbers. One day when I was shooting 'In The Mood For Love' in Bangkok, in the hotel room, the room that Tony and Maggie spent their time in, I realised the room number was like 3-0-something and I said why don't we put it as 2046? At first it was like a joke, but for me, psychologically, the two films are related. Then the structure of '2046' began to change and evolved around this point. So now these two stories had something in common and the character played by Tony became the link between the two film. At first we didn't have this character of the writer in '2046', the original character was a postman.

According to the book, what sets his films apart are their subversion and extension of genre conventions. As Tears Go By is ostensibly a Triad/gangster film but is infused with a camaraderie that goes beyond gang loyalty and develops complex relationships. Ashes of Time (1994) turns the wu xia film into a meditation on time and fractured reality by its elliptical (and, Teo argues, literary) structure - a bold film that at once alienates art-house viewers and genre aficionados (but enthralls those who happen to be both). Chungking Express (1994) takes its roots in noir film but infuses it with characters whose alienation allows them to emote to, say, a can of pineapples with the right sell-by date rather than to people. Wong Kar-Wai: Auteur of Time is a long overdue analysis of one of world cinema's most acclaimed, eclectic and exacting auteurs, providing an insight into his films that enhances the understanding of both the texts and the cultural context of his work. It covers both the visual style and the literary heritage of the films, has plenty of background anecdote and a wider look at the Wong Kar-Wai 'team' of collaborators. As such it is an invaluable work on one of the most exciting talents working today. Where it is of less depth, however, is in the discussion of pre-cinema works, screenplays and supervised projects (particularly considering that his advertising/pop-video work is discussed). Also the index has several omissions and incorrect page references, which is annoying, but overall these are minor quibbles to what is an essential purchase for anyone interested in Hong Kong or world cinema.
