SPRING 2003 HOME They say that love can change a man. I start to find myself looking better and more charming, and suddenly I discover that I’m turning blonde. (Qiwu in Fallen Angels)
T HE FOUR films which I am going to discuss are Days of Being Wild Chungking Express Fallen Angels (1995), and Happy Together (1997). These four films were directed by Hong Kong director, Wong Kar Wai, who wowed the critics at Cannes 2000 with In the Mood for Love At this juncture, I would like to give a brief synopsis of each of the films chosen. In Days of Being Wild
In Chungking Express
Fallen Angels

Lastly, Happy Together is about two gay Hong Kong lovers in Argentina. Ho and Lai embark on a roller coaster relationship of break-ups and make-ups. Lai also befriends a co-worker, Chang, in order to forget about Ho. The film fleshes out the complicated relationships of the three men, and eventually the film ends when all three men realise the difficulty in maintaining a relationship and choose therefore to remain alone. The alienation comes when all three men feel ostracised by a conservative Asian society, which frowns upon a gay lifestyle. For example, Ho has trouble connecting with his father, and thus has run away to Argentina.

Just as Chang leaves, Faye tells Cop 663 that her next trip away may be for a long time. The drug dealer leaves Hong Kong on the first flight out after killing her Caucasian boyfriend, never to be seen again by 223 or the audience.

No one captures the ache of missed romantic connections like the director of "In the Mood for Love." In this gorgeously melancholic fresco of love affairs, Tony Leung Chiu Wai plays a womanizing pulp-fiction writer in '60s Hong Kong whose fragmented memories shuttle between the beautiful women in his life, including Ziyi Zhang and Gong Li. The ravishing images are tinged with regret and loss: no passion can assuage the jaded hero's solitude. -David Ansen © 2005 Newsweek, Inc.

Interview with Wong Kar Wai
Margaret Pomeranz speaks to Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai about his extensive filmmaking career, covering films such as CHUNGKING EXPRESS, FALLEN ANGELS, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE and his most recent film 2046. WONG KAR WAI: I was born in Shanghai and I came to Hong Kong when I was five. So one of the reasons I wanted to make films about the 60s is, by the time I get to Hong Kong it's 1963 and it is a new experience for me because the two cities are very different. My brothers and sisters stayed in Shanghai.
MARGARET POMERANZ: And they couldn't get out because of the Cultural Revolution?
WONG KAR WAI: Yes.
MARGARET POMERANZ: I mean, that virtually turned you into an only child?
WONG KAR WAI: Right, exactly. Because my mother has a very big family in Shanghai, so I have, like, almost 40 cousins, so we stayed together all the time. So by the time I get to Hong Kong I become the only child and the only one, surrounded by adults, you know. I keep writing letters. My parents asked me to write letters to my brothers and sisters, and I read all the time. So afterwards, when I work in the TV stations, I start writing scripts.

I mean, the handover from, the Hong Kong, from British government back to China. And, um, at that time, the Chinese government promised Hong Kong "50 years, and change". And 50 years later, after 1997, will be 2046, I think, "Well, that's a very interesting promise". So I want to make a film about promise.
And, and one day, when I'm shooting 'In the Mood for Love', because it's very hard to work on the same project at the same time. And so when we're shooting in a hotel room in, during 'In the Mood for Love', all the room numbers is 30-something. I said, "Well, why don't we put it 2046?" 32. Film: Wong Kar Wai
Provides a short essay about his work by Will Aitken.
http://www.montrealmirror.com/ARCHIVES/1998/060498/film5.html
Wong Kar Wai again and again and again by WILL AITKEN Often Wong Kar Wai's films offer two stories not one. Sometimes they run separately: one story, then another. No connection, or maybe only enough connection to be frustrating. Other times the stories race along side by side, but not touching, the one never aware of the other except for the urgent breeze that blows out of nowhere. Sometimes, as in his sixth and most recent film, Happy Together (1997), there's only one story, the one the characters live. Watching their repetitions and disappointments you begin to see the ghost story that overlays all they doit's the story of the life they meant to live. Happy Together Fallen Angels (1995) is the only Montreal premiere in the trio. In the first of the picture's stories, an agent for professional hitmen falls in love with one of the killers she runs. He, a true professional, refuses to mix love with business. In the second story, a mute ex-con makes a living by re-opening stores that have been closed for the night and intimidating customers into buying his wares. Then he meets Cherry, who's just been dumped by her boyfriend. If Fallen Angels sounds vaguely familiar, it's because it's a spin-off of

Writer-director Wong Kar Wai shows eye for detail in new film, 2046
CHRISTY LEMIRE Sun Aug 7,12:49 PM ET (AP) - If anyone else's name but Wong Kar Wai's were at the top of the credits, you'd think 2046 was a parody of a Wong Kar Wai film. The writer-director has proven his singular vision and obsessive eye for detail, and continues to do so with the followup to his gorgeous In the Mood for Love from 2000. All his trademark esthetic touches are there: the richly textured furnishings, the sumptuously appointed dresses, the flawlessly made-up women passing through narrow hallways or catching their porcelain reflections in the mirror. There's flirtatious bossa nova music and familiar Nat King Cole Christmas carols. And the rain - always the rain, falling in slow motion and illuminated by a lamp on some dark street where lovers are on the verge of doing something they probably shouldn't. Wong's rendering of 1960s Hong Kong - dreamily romantic, like an impressionist painting come to life - is so mesmerizing, it's almost enough to distract from the fact that beneath the surface, there's little substance to the characters or situations in which they find themselves. A woman slowly and gracefully lifts a cigarette to her lips, the smoke curling artfully from her fingertips, and it's practically ballet. But really, if you stop to think about it, it's just a woman spacing out while smoking a cigarette in the kitchen.

http://www.artbook.com/2906571679.html
Wong Kar-Wai, the brilliantly manic Chinese film director, is right above Quentin Tarantino on the theoretical film flow chart. With films such as As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild, Chungking Express, and Ashes of Time , Kar-Wai has been at the forefront of Hong Kong cinema. On the surface, Kar-Wai follows the rules, presenting the usual fare of car chases, explosions, and sex, but in reality his films are much deeper. His characters live and die on the fringe of acceptance and existence, in a nebulous gray area between good and almost evil. Wong-Kai has managed to invent an art that refuses the affluence of the West: by sticking his guns (and knives, fists and chains), this film director has created a bridge between Hong Kong and the rest of the world.

Yet Wong presumably would like us to find meaning in everything his characters do, as his impressive cast of Asian all-stars - including Tony Leung, Gong Li, Faye Wong, an all-too-brief Maggie Cheung and a captivating Zhang Ziyi - appears in the past and future in fragmented depictions of futile, ill-timed love.
