Home Movies English A portal dedicated to famous persons of the world Mare Winningham Mare Winningham is the most often forgotten and overlooked Brat Packer, and is usually remembered as "the one with the pink sweater in St.Elmo's". She only appeared in one Brat Pack film, which probably accounts for the memory lapse, and she never went in for the party scene associated with the Pack. Winningham was born on May 6, 1959 in Phoenix, Arizona, but she grew up in California. When she was younger, Mare used to spend her summers at workshops hosted by Cal State Northridge, where she took acting courses. She attended college, and by the time she graduated had already landed an agent and a role in a television movie. Special Olympics aired in 1978, and served Winningham by giving her more or less steady television work in other movies. Her work in television continued through the 80s, and was highlighted by Amber Waves , for which she won an Emmy. Then, in 1985 she was cast as the mousy and introverted Wendy in Joel Schumacher's St. Elmo's Fire. However, the fame and success of that movie never really parlayed itself into anything else for Winningham, who soon returned to television movies. She resurfaced in 1995 in Georgia, a film for which she was nominated for an Academy Award - the only Brat Packer ever so honored. Recently, in 1998, she won her second Emmy Award for her role as Lurleen Wallace in the television movie

She's inspecting, checking things out. "Roger," the Oscar-nominated, Sonoma-based act-ress/singer teases. She steps into the light spilling onto the wooden stage where proprietor Roger Rhoten is waiting. "Roger, you've really got to get a new curtain up here. This thing's just shot!" "It's on the list," he chuckles, sounding like a businessman with a very long list. At stage center, turning to face the rows of empty, darkened seats, she notices the banner stretching across the doorway: Mare Winningham in Concert. "Nice job, Roger," she commends, adding, "God! I hope someone actually shows up for this thing." This "thing" is a benefit for the lovely but cash-strapped Sebastiani, the 63-year-old downtown Sonoma landmark that Rhoten has spent years steadfastly developing into a community center for the arts, presenting everything from the annual local children's production of the Nutcracker to showings of little-seen art films and reissues of classics.

But I want to be the next.” It’s the kind of easy banter the actress-singer proffers between nightclub sets of her country-tinged folk music. But the setting on this Thursday afternoon is the chapel at the University of Judaism, where Winningham sits at an upright piano after completing her three-hour Hebrew class. In her pure, open voice, she launches into her “Convert Jig,” a country-ish ditty she wrote to honor her Introduction to Judaism teacher before her conversion last year. “He has organized the notes for life and given me the tools to turn my tiny insignificance into something big,” she croons, as her eyes crinkle into a smile. “I will be a Jew like all of you ... and never eat a pig.” If the levity is unexpected, the actress thinks she is, too. “Look, my last name is Winningham, and that in itself is funny,” she says. “I joke sometimes that I’ll open ‘Winningham’s Kosher Bakery’ and throw everyone for a loop.”
