Search Review Archive: Brought to you by Debra Winger Transcript (Oct '01) Nominated for three 'Best Actress' Academy Awards thus far during her career, Winger hasn't made a film since she walked away from Hollywood some five years ago, in 1996. Well, she's back. She's feisty. She's to the point. And she's as good as she ever was. During the middle of the week prior to the opening of the Chicago International Film Festival, we received notice that a particularly avant-garde German film was going to be yanked from the schedule. Filling the void would be Debra Winger's latest film, Big Bad Love . Directed and co-written by Winger's husband, Arliss Howard (Cowboy in Full Metal Jacket ), co-written by another Howard, Jim, and produced by and co-starring Winger, the film was a true family affair. The result was one of the most complex, daring and unique American films in years. I had the opportunity to speak to Winger in the Four Seasons Hotel in early October. Having just conducted a TV interview with noted Chicago celebrity reporter, Bill Zwecker, I stepped in, assured by the made-up Winger that she normally looked "nothing like this". And, for the record, the interview was truly one-of-a-kind; never before have I had the talent correct my spelling or churlishly and good humoredly grill me about why I didn't do my 'homework' any sooner than I did. Nor have I had anyone grab my notebook out of my hands and, laughingly make up questions to answer, like "Where did Arliss get that cool shirt?" | |
