Dean Gallery , I hopped on a bus as soon as I realised I had a couple of spare hours. Many of the photographs in the first two rooms (of 5 in the exhibition) were from the earlier periods of his work, and together with the facts that the prints were tiny and a there was a constant flow of people standing three inches from them they were somewhat disappointing. In fact, by the time I had seen all 5 rooms I had the impression that he was a very good photographer in many technical areas, yet the images themselves failed to move me at all. I do not remember feeling a change in emotions after seeing a single one of them. As I was about to leave I noticed a small television with a large crowd gathered around it; the constant chatter enough to ensure that little of it could be heard. A staff member from the gallery walked over and increased the volume substantially, annoying those who had been talking and all but clearing the room. I decided to fill in some time prior to the next bus. The documentary which featured gave me a much greater insight into his work than the preceding exhibition, and would perhaps benefit from being shown before embarking on a seemingly random tour of photographs and drawings. I realised that much of the reason for the lacklustre feelings was in the way the exhibition itself had been presented - with several photographs repeated in different rooms, and no apparent structure with regards to chronology, subject, style or media. Disappointing.

Takanini trainer Richard Yuill breathed a sigh of relief when he secured the services of world-class jockey Douglas Whyte to ride multiple Group I winner Sedecrem in Saturday's $A1 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane. Yuill was beginning to run out of suitable rider options for Sedecrem after the two jockeys who had ridden the gelding in his previous Brisbane starts were both ruled out for Saturday's race through suspension. Then he heard that Hong Kong-based Whyte was coming to ride Royal Ninja in the Queensland Derby. "I got hold of him (Whyte) and he accepted the ride on Sedecrem straight away," Yuill said. "It's a big plus to have a rider of Whyte's class in a race like the Stradbroke. He's won five Hong Kong premierships and is right up there with the best jockeys in the world," Yuill said. Sedecrem has gone two contrasting races in Brisbane in his build-up to the Stradbroke. His first-up fifth at Eagle Farm was a good effort but then he finished well back in the field in the Doomben 10,000.

ANDREW WHYTE'S HELICOPTERS-OBJETS D'ART
by Ann L. Cooper This article first appeared in Aviation Illustrated magazine, October 1996 The French consider an objet d'art to be a "relatively small" object of priceless beauty and/or value. In the case of the art of Andy Whyte, objets d'art refer to something much larger-canvases onto which Andy has painted, with his heart and soul, the aviation that he loves and, especially, the helicopters with which he has been intimately involved. For 40 years, Andrew Whyte engineered preliminary design with Sikorsky Aircraft. For 30 of those years, he has been an artist as well. Helicopters as subjects for his art are logical extensions of his lifelong concerns. Andy, an Artist Fellow with the American Society of Aviation Artists (ASAA), said, "The large role that is played today in military and civilian aviation by rotary-winged craft has largely been neglected in aviation art. The subjects of my paintings vary, but often involve plenty of helicopters. I'd like to carve my own niche by specializing. Everybody paints P-51's."
If the purpose of aviation art is to skillfully depict the world of aviationfrom a historical perspective, through present design and activities and on to stylized visions of the futurerotary-winged craft and the people involved with them are well represented by Andy. He was hired to work for the creative Igor Sikorsky, the "father of the helicopter industry," just twelve years after Sikorsky introduced the VS-300, the world's first practical helicopter in 1939.

Education 8P20 Jr / Int Language Instructors R. Scott / G. Whyte
OUTLINE OF ASSIGNMENTS
The course and its assignments are designed to support the growth and development of a community of teachers who love language. In this regard, teachers are better equipped to teach language if they themselves are and continue to be life-long readers, researchers and writers. With accompanying reflection on personal professional development and classroom practice, teachers have the potential to offer the very best of language instruction to their students. The major assignments have been planned to support the reading, researching (for planning) and writing roles of the English teacher. The developmental approach is the underlying premise in all cases. In view of this, regular attendance and active classroom participation are critical . The Student Handbook states: “If missed classes are greater than 10% of the total number of classes, a make-up assignment will be required.” In the case of 8P20, this translates to more than two classes missed. The nature of such an assignment will be determined by the instructor in consultation with the teacher candidate. Professionalism also pertains to punctuality in attendance and when submitting assignments.

In the 1960s a group of dedicated amateurs formed the Loch Ness Investigation Bureau to keep a constant vigil on the loch. Birth of a Legend
back to part 1

In the 1950s, a local doctor named Constance Whyte began collecting these eyewitness accounts, along with sketches of what the people had seen, finally publishing them in 1957 as a book entitled More Than a Legend. Noting that many of her friends had been subjected to ridicule and contempt, Whyte said her goal in writing the book was "the vindication of many people of integrity who had reported honestly what they had seen in Loch Ness." (To hear recent personal anecdotes, see Eyewitness Accounts.
In 1987, Operation Deep Scan, the most ambitious sonar survey of Loch Ness, found three unexplained underwater targets.
But perhaps the most important effect of Whyte's book was to turn the tide of public opinion. Long dismissed as fodder for "silly season" press reports, Nessie was finally considered a subject worthy of serious scientific investigation. In the span of a decade, beginning in 1958, four separate expeditions were launched, first by the BBC, then by three respected British universities: Oxford, Cambridge, and the University of Birmingham. Rather than scanning the surface with binoculars and cameras, as the amateur investigators had, these expeditions came equipped with sonar, a military technology that used sound to search the underwater environment. Though the expeditions found nothing conclusive, in each case the sonar operators detected large, moving underwater objects they could not explain. (To learn how sonar works, see
