    The 2004 Hugo Nominees (fiction)
    A mega-meta-review
Repeating last year's successful effort, I have read all the Hugo fiction nominees. This is a mega-meta-review, a set of links to other people's reviews with my own comments interspersed. Feedback is most welcome.
    Best Novel
See also Richard Horton's rasfw survey of the nominees in this category. Summary: two near-future stories of sort-of First Contact with non-humans on a parallel world; one classic fantasy; one cyberpunkish space opera; and one far future science fiction-meets-classical-mythology hybrid.
    5) Humans by Robert J. Sawyer. This is the sequel to last year's winner, Hominids , which I personally thought was the weakest of the nominees. Sawyer has repeated the performance. The book takes forward the story of contact between our world and a parallel universe where Neanderthals rather than homo sapiens survived and became civilised. The Neanderthal civilisation, which has become hi-tech without industrialisation, is completely implausible both technologically and socially. Sawyer's comments on sex, politics and religion are below the level of an earnest undergraduate. The prose is wooden and clunking. Presumably local advantage will not be as much in Sawyer's favour as it was at last year's Toronto-based WorldCon (though Boston is worryingly close to Canada...)
My view is a minority one.

    http://explorers.whyte.com/sf/ender.htm
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
    Review by Nicholas Whyte
This is the eleventh in a series of reviews of those pieces of written science fiction and fantasy which have won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. I have been writing these in alphabetical order by title, and Ender's Game thus comes at the end of a run of five novels (after The Dispossessed Doomsday Book Dreamsnake , and Dune Ender's Game won the awards made in 1986, beating David Brin's post-Holocaust novel The Postman and Greg Bear's novel length expansion of "Blood Music" which were both also Hugo and Nebula nominees. I considered writing a joint review of Ender's Game and Dune , the previous book on my list. Both are coming-of-age stories of a Messiah figure, who turns out to be the end product of a carefully engineered breeding programme. Both deal heavily with war; both feature apparently incomprehensible and terrifying alien life-forms. Both novels pretty much established their author's reputation, and built a cult of fans who eagerly bought the many sequels (though in both cases the later volumes are generally agreed to be inferior). Both, indeed, are novelisations of stories originally published in Analog . However the two novels are so powerful individually that they deserve separate treatment. Ender's Game is a vivd and disturbing book. The most vivid part is its portrayal of the casual violence of childhood and the isolation of the gifted child. Much great sf literature appeals to readers who themselves were (or indeed are) gifted children, whose experience of childhood friendship was limited and whose attempts to strike out physically were often unusuccessful and almost always duly punished. (Card himself, in a lengthy introduction to the second, 1991 edition of the novel, spends more time on this topic than on any other.) The twist in Ender's story is, first, that when he attacks other children physically, he is more or less rewarded rather than punished by the military elite who control his life; but second, it really doesn't make him feel any better. Most child-genius-turned superhero stories at least let their hero feel good about what they have done at some point; Ender is denied even that luxury.
