Perhaps the Con committee should ask Barry Morse how he "honestly" feels about Grace Lee returning. I consider myself an open-minded person, but I only make my remarks based on my experience from the Portland CON. How about another Trek star? What do you think Grace "truly" remembers about Space:1999? I'd be interested to know - especially if that was one of the reasons for inviting her. I think the Con committee should talk to those who attended the Portland CON to get collective thoughts on their opinions about Grace's return. I would hate to think that a 1999 cast member accepts an invitation that can't be afforded because of Grace. This is only my opinion, and I apologize if this is coming off as any kind of slam to the CON committee. Aside from my thoughts on Grace, I am completely impressed with the work of the Con committee. The committee seems very organized at such an early date, and I commend them for all their efforts!! Inviting a non-S19 guest to a Space: 1999 Convention is not new. There have been at least five guests from four other SF series and movies in past conventions, from Star Trek, Superman, Battlestar Galactica, and V. (I have, BTW, information, including guest lists, on all the past (and future) conventions I could find out about at the Conventions section of Metaforms, at space1999.net) I have read some old fanzines (/Main Computer/, IIRC), and some controversy was generated then as well. I don't recall everything that was written, but they seemed to range from why spend the money in that way, to liking the resulting welcoming aspect of S19 and its fandom. The viewpoints all have validity, in my opinion; but if I may venture my opinions, I feel inviting a non-S19 guest, especially in the context of what I see at the MainMission: 2000 website at the Cybrary, is not a problem. This convention has clearly set very ambitious goals, already having eleven confirmed guests and inviting eleven more, setting up a wide variety of events, some based directly on some of the most successful Breakaway Convention events (I for one would love to get involved in "48 Minutes," having missed it at Breakaway), to some ones that seem new to me. For one thing, one out of 11 guests being non-S19 is only nine percent, and that doesn't bother me in the slightest. Another factor is that the inclusiveness can benefit S19 fandom. There are probably many more one-time casual fans of Space: 1999 that haven't considered involving themselves in fandom, but who might find the combination of a lot of S19 cast and crew, *combined* with someone from Star Trek and/or Buffy the Vampire Slayer (should Juliet Landau accept) to be just enough to draw them in. They might come hesistantly to a Space: 1999 convention, and then discover, if MM:2000 is anything like Breakaway Con was, a friendly and fascinating event and crowd, and might also discover there was a lot more to Space: 1999 than they had remembered. Simply put, they may be drawn in by the variety of guests, but find Space: 1999 and its fandom are worth interest. So instead of weakening Space: 1999, inviting a couple of non-S19 guests could actually help. I think finding strength from unexpected quarters and curious opportunities is a theme in Space: 1999 itself, and I don't mind applying the same idea elsewhere. I think some Star Trek fans will appear (whether it be out of genuine interest in seeing Grace, or of completing a "roster" of seeing ST cast/crew at cons, or whatever), and may return to Trekdom with stories of how Space: 1999 is not the realm of "geeks" or some such thing (as made out to be by /Sci-Fi Universe/ and other publications) or brainwashed, blind devotees of a "failed" two-year series based on a "silly" premise, but is instead a fun and thoughtful crowd of people who are honest about there being problems with the series yet still find much more in the way of depth, enjoyment, and value in Space: 1999. This is all, of course, pure speculation on my part, but that's how I feel. Is Grace Lee Whitney a good choice? Frankly, I have no idea, because I know little about her. Yes, she was something of a minor player in Star Trek, and apparently has a checkered past; but I hear positive things about her too, and I doubt she was picked randomly out of the air by the con committee. I'm willing to wait and see the "method to the madness," as Ellen put it about her and the guest invitations in general. Such methods rarely becoming obvious immediately. :-) She is one guest among many invited, and I am not worried about someone getting bumped off the list for sake of her either, especially since the large number of invited (and already confirmed) guests will likely attract a larger number of attendees as well. On a slightly different note about MM2K.... Some of the general aspects and events are going to appear similar from con to con, whether in S19, Creation Cons (well, those feel *much* more like carbon copies, IMO :-), or wherever; but it is the combination of guests and fans who attend, the location, the unexpected occurances, and other factors that mix together to give the unique feel. I've been to only two S19 cons so far, but I've also been to two ST, two general media SF cons, two literary SF cons, and two science fiction/fact conventions. Four of these five pairs had one thing in common: though sharing some traits, they still felt like memorably different conventions. (Why haven't I been to third instances of each? Well, I almost certainly will with most of these, I'm just not a terribly frequent con-goer in general, depending on what you define as "frequent." :) Given this sort of thing, I think that despite there being some similarities, most people would still come out of MainMission feeling it was a different, distinct event (a lot of people didn't get to Breakaway anyway). I for one wasn't able to attend all the goings on at Breakaway, and though I would have liked to, having attended ten cons over seven years has given me the understanding that I can never catch everything at every Con. Things are scheduled in overlapping times for sake of variety and choice. Not everyone will care to hear every guest talk anyway. Not everyone will want to go to all the other events either. I have only been to one convention that had just one or "one and a half" tracks (the latter being a term I just made up for having two tracks but continually shutting the second down for the sake of things going on in the first), and that was a small (albeit also enjoyable) convention. Some frequent con-goers might likely be less forgiving and say a one-track con is rather pathetic, in their opinion. What I see of the MainMission website is a desire not to copy Breakaway, but to instead build up the momentum and excitement that was started at this last convention, particularly on Breakaway day itself. I was interested in the originally announced 2000 convention idea for the fan fiction emphasis, but am excited by the ambitious goals of what the initial idea has rapidly grown into (and am still happy to see the fiction/writing events planned, and the technical track sounds different and interesting too. :-) This, and "Message From Moonbase Alpha," and other talk all adds to the feeling that Space: 1999 is on an upsurge, and that's new. <G> I learned something interesting at Breakaway. I had felt that Online Alpha was probably just a fraction of active fans, and it was interesting to find out that perhaps only ten percent of Breakaway attendees were Online Alphans. Also, its not much more than a month after Breakaway, and I am surprised by how much has been set up so quickly, as evidenced on the MainMission site. I would guess that's a terrible lot of work. A lot is still in the preliminary stage, I imagine. I am not trying to make excuses for anyone, or anything like that; but I'd say give the committee a chance to get more things settled, especially if some of them are new to arranging a con, especially one this ambitious. It's a lot of work, besides their usual jobs and lives. I'm not worried about getting information. Between the website, the OneList dedicated to the Con, discussion on this list, and some of the committee being on the list, I have no fears we'll hear plenty of information, suggestions, and so on, without having to look too hard. While I respect different opinions, I most certainly do NOT respect name calling. Grow up! Grace went through a number of hard years and may not be the smartest individual on the planet, but so what?
