Wil Wheaton's pursuit of life, love, and fulfillment beyond the Starship Enterprise
By Dana Greenlee, co-host of WebTalk Radio
Sept 18, 2004 - How successfully can an actor playing a geek on “ Star Trek The Next Generation ” move to being a true geek on the Internet? Actor and writer Wil Wheaton is known for playing Wesley Crusher , Starfleet ensign for many years on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” He also starred in the motion picture “ Stand By Me .” He’s now a blogger and author of his second book, “ Just A Geek : Unflinchingly honest tales of the pursuit of life, love, and fulfillment beyond the Starship Enterprise.”
He took a break from blogging to chat about his acting career, his attempts to distance himself from

Interview with Wil Wheaton

by Lando da Pimp MillionairePlayboy.com How did you first get your start in acting? Wil Wheaton : It runs in my family, all the way back to when the Wheatons were pig-chasing potato-chuckers back in Scotland, in the year 9 [ Ed note : ]. In a more direct way, it's my mom's fault. She was doing commercials when I was a kid, and took me with her on an audition. They were casting for mothers and sons, so they asked me if I would try out. I was 7, and far too agreeable to everything, so I said yes, got the job, and never looked back. Not even when that train was chasing me. MillionairePlayboy.com As an actor, who do you look up to? Who influences you the most? Wil Wheaton Ed Norton, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon are all admired by me. They are fantastic actors, who always make the most of their roles. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they get the best written roles, but I've seen lousy actors screw up the best writing (first hand, even: Rutger Haue absolutely butchered Roger Avary's brilliant Mr. Stitch

11 Questions with Wil Wheaton
By Brian Briggs
Real interviews with real people. Unlike the rest of BBspot there's nothing made up here. I know it's a difficult transition but I'm not fooling. We did email these questions and these were the responses. In the first of what will be a continuing series, Wil Wheaton of Star Trek: The Next Generation Stand By Me and Python fame subjects himself to 11 questions from BBspot. Enjoy! BBspot (1): All the geeks want to know, what kind of computer system you have and what games do you play on it? Processor? OS? Details please. The Wil Machine Wil: Oh boy. Well, all the geeks are going to rejoice when they hear that the box they use for target practice is probably superior to mine. My computer was built from zero by me and my friend. It's a Pentium 2, 128 megs of ram, uh...I have some kind of swell video card that does all those 3DFX things, and a crappy soundblaster sound card. My brother and I just crammed a bunch of big hard drives into the case, and put in a new CD-ROM drive, so we're completely out of space inside. Tell you what, if I ever find Gordon Moore, I'm gonna kick him in the neck.

Taking the Bait: Wil Wheaton
"When I was Wesley, I didn't hate him at all, but after I left TNG I thought I hated him..." In 1986, Rob Reiner directed STAND BY ME, a film which not only became a classic to the youths of America, but it introduced several actors that would go on to make Names for themselves in the Eighties. The late River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland all had their moments in the film, but Wil Wheaton as Gordie Lachance was the star. Gordie was your Everyman and a whole generation of boys could relate.

Visiting with Wil Wheaton
Submitted by sequitur on Thu, 08/14/2003 - 06:14. Quanta Many of your know I met Wil in July. I had heard last year that he really liked Quanta and mentioned it on his site so I wanted to meet him. Tonight was really a lot of fun! It's amazing how easy it is to just get into your own little world and sit at home when you're self employed. It's also fun to see just how interesting people you can meet are. Wil is really fun not because he's a celebrity but because he's Wil. This time we made the commitment to get there early enough to hear him read. We got there a few minutes after 7 PM and when we got into the store we didn't see him but we heard a voice and followed it. Soon we came to an area with maybe 100 people sitting in chairs and standing crowded against the book shelves. There was Wil in jeans and a black TShirt that said in white letters "I'm blogging this" reading. I lke his writing, but his book is really amazingly better when he reads it. He did the voices of the other actors when recounting his Star Trek experiences. His Micheal Dorn is amazingly good. He also had all the right expressions and... well, he brought it to life just like a professional actor, which of course he is. He read a second passage and mentioned that he was really tired from lack of sleep which explained his somewhat silly introduction to it. After that he signed books and posed for pictures. I even saw someone bring a poster of something for him to sign. One thing about Wil you have to admire is that he is very serious about making that brief moment with a fan special and he never makes it seem like anything but fun. He really does show a strong conviction here. If you ever meet him you won't know if he's having an off day, because he really looked tired after. Anyway my wife suggested we just go sit down and wait so we could take some time with him.

It's the perfect thing to read over lunch, or while flying from one coast to the other. It's a thoughtful piece; Wheaton's tales of navigating the unsure waters between Snotty Kid and Responsible Grownup serve to remind me that Life = Experiences x Perspective. Somewhere in the Ihnatko School Book Depository (aka Unit 399 at the Waltham E-Z-Stor) I've got a book by a former Disney animator which, a friend promised me, was a brilliantly entertaining story about what it was like to work at the Mouse House during Disney's golden age. I read the whole thing cover to cover (spurred on by memories of Chuck Jones' marvy-lous "Chuck Amuck") and it doesn't stick as one of the more pleasant incidents from my life. Slogging through this book was like being a kid at a family barbecue, and not being able to get away from the drunk and bitter uncle who insists that the only reason why he never amounted to anything was because they never caught a break, not
