Interleukin-8 release and neutrophil degranulation after pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass
A Finn, S Naik, N Klein, RJ Levinsky, S Strobel and M Elliott
Division of Cell and Molecular Biology, Institute of Child Health, London, England. Capillary leak after cardiopulmonary bypass operations for correction of congenital heart defects is universally seen in children and often causes significant morbidity and mortality. Since neutrophil-mediated endothelial injury has been implicated as a pathogenetic mechanism, a prospective controlled descriptive study was performed to investigate possible activation pathways during and after the bypass procedure. Overview
In the UMass Machine Learning Laboratory (directed by Prof. Utgoff ), we study computational methods that enable machines to learn from experience. We generally concentrate on the problem of learning the representations on which more widely studied model/data fitting programs depend. Thus, instead of manually engineering a representation, and watching the fitting algorithm run its course, we study the more fundamental problem of learning the representation itself. Our project areas are described below. The machine learning laboratory is located on the third floor of our new Computer Science building at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst . We have a weekly lab meeting at lunch time on Wednesdays, 12:15-1:30. The topic is usually either a lab member's current research, or a paper that has been distributed ahead of time for discussion. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Title: Senior Lecturer Disciplines: Epidemiology, Statistics. Research areas: HIV/AIDS, Clinical trials, Infectious disease. Room: Telephone: Fax: Email: shabbar.jaffar@lshtm.ac.uk
Background
Shabbar is a Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology.
Teaching
He organises and teaches on the study unit, Design and Analysis of Epidemiological Studies, and teaches on Extended Epidemiology.
Research
Shabbar's main research area is HIV/AIDS. He is PI of a large cluster-randomised trial comparing home-based with facility-based delivery of ART in SE Uganda. Adherence to ART, costs both to provider and the patient, and stigma are major research areas within the trial. Shabbar provides statistical and epidemiological support to a school-randomized trial of a HIV prevention strategy in Zimbabwe, severe malaria in children in Yemen, rotavirus infection in children in India, and a trial of complimentary feeding of children in an area of high HIV prevelance in Zambia .

In murine model a single brief episode of myocardial ischemia followed by reperfusion (I/R) is associated with free radical generation and induction of chemokines. In this study we examine the effects of repetitive I/R. Methods: C57BL6 mice underwent daily 15 minute left anterior descending coronary occlusions followed by reperfusion. After 7, 14, 21 and 28 days, echocardiography studies were performed, and hearts of I/R and sham operated animals were processed for RNA and histological studies. Results: Conclusion: Repetitive brief I/R in the murine heart induces fibrotic remodeling and systolic dysfunction, in absence of myocardial infarction and necrosis. Early chemokine induction and interstitial fibrosis may have a role in mediating left ventricular dysfunction in ischemic cardiomyopathy and myocardial hibernation. Georg Thieme Verlag
