83. Shy? Why And What To Do About It By Linda Wang
by linda wang • Richmond, BC. Too shy to socialize, Thomas hides in the washroom during recess while linda wang is a freelance writer and English tutor.
http://www.creationsmagazine.com/articles/C97/Wang.html
Shy? Why and What to Do About It
According to an U.S. study, fifty percent of Americans describe themselves as shy, and many more as having been shy. Shy people tend to overestimate their likelihood of failure in social interactions and are highly sensitive towards negative reactions. Although they are not usually viewed as negatively as they fear, they are quick to make judgments about themselves. They blame themselves for any negative outcomes and undervalue their part in their successes.
Research in the U.S. shows that shyness is typically highest among Asian Americans and lowest among Jewish Americans. Apparently, the way a culture attributes blame for failure and credit for success plays a role in the presence or lack of self-confidence. Experiential factors as well as a strong genetic predisposition also appear to contribute to the development of shyness. Hence, as a result of frequent rejection and disappointment, some people develop shyness in adulthood rather than in childhood.
People who are shy may be difficult to befriend and may appear cold and unreceptive. One woman says that because people don’t understand her shyness, she has been called many things, including "a pushover, inflexible, selfish, secretive, uncaring, too dependent, and too independent."

    Tan Dun
My purpose is to find my own language. The music of the future. It does not fit the 20th century, but opens the door to the 21st. Tan Dun Tan Dun's music is a vital expression of independence from the weight of Chinese history, and of self-assurance amid contemporary turmoil...Every part of Tan Dun's music is violent as a burst of human blood, yet full of grace, a voice of the soul. I believe he is one of the most outstanding composer's today.
Toru Takemitsu Born in 1957 in Si Mao, a remote, rural village in the central Hunan province in China, composer/conductor Tan Dun spent his formative years listening to the native folksongs and ritual music of his region. During his youth, Tan learned music largely on his own and had little contact with outside musical influences. The music of his childhood made a deep impression on Tan, and continues greatly to influence his compositions today. Many of Tan's school years were spent during the repressive regime of Mao's Cultural Revolution. He planted rice for two years as part of his compulsory labor and then worked as an er-hu player and arranger for a provincial Beijing Opera troupe. During his stint with the opera company, Tan was exposed to his first Western classical workBeethoven's Fifth Symphony an eye-opening experience which introduced Tan to a whole realm of new sonic possibilities. He began to imagine the possibility of becoming a composer but it was not until after the Cultural Revolution that Tan had his first, formal musical training.

fax:(415)502-8424 Richard Locksley, MD RESEARCH INTEREST T Cells and Development of the Effector Cytokine Repertoire T cells are the critical effector cells of the adaptive immune response. To acquire effector functions, however, naive T cells undergo a complex differentiation process to become mature cells capable of effecting host defense against microbial pathogens. Different pathogens require different types of effector cells that can have markedly different capabilities. The most widely disparate mature helper T cell populations, termed Th1 and Th2 cells, secrete distinct patterns of cytokines that orchestrate distinct types of immune responses. The laboratory melds molecular and cellular studies to investigate the signals that direct the differentiation of naive CD4+ T cells to their mature states. The current laboratory interests focus not only of T cell differentiation, but also on the acquisition of cytokine expression by innate cells of the immune system. Using a variety of genetically modified cells and mice, cytokine expression is studied in vitro and in vivo, using both infectious and allergic models. Major interests include understanding the primary regulation of IL-4 gene transcription in both T cells and non-T cells, and in exogenous signals that drive cytokine expression at inflammatory foci.
