Film and theatre director, script writer and set designer, one of the topmost artists in the history of the world's cinematography, winner of the Oscar Award for lifetime achievement. A student of the Cracow's Academy of Fine Arts in 1946-9, Andrzej Wajda graduated from the National Higher School of Film (Directing) in 1953, to make his debut movie, POKOLENIE / GENERATION , two years later. This story of young lads from the Warsaw neighbourhoods during the Nazi occupation was soon followed by KANAL / CANAL (1957) and POPIOL I DIAMENT / ASHES AND DIAMONDS (1958), the latter based on a novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski. "Cinema also has a social, moral, philosophical function. This is often forgotten today." Guests from the United States and Poland, among them Agnieszka Holland, Wajda's favourite collaborator on screenplays, were present. Moreover, the occasion marked the founding of the new "Andrzej Wajda Philip Morris Freedom Prize," to be awarded annually to a promising filmmaker from Central or Eastern Europe, in whose works are reflected the themes of freedom and democracy. The prize will be awarded together with a purse of $10,000 donated by the Philip Morris Kunstförderung. Each July, during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, an international jury will select the winner of the Andrzej Wajda Prize. In February, on the occasion of the Freedom Film Festival in Berlin, the prize will be officially awarded to the winner. "This is not a lifetime achievement award," says Gary McVey, director of the American Cinema Foundation, "but a prize in recognition of an exemplary moral and ethical message in the art of the cinema.

To anyone interested in the history of European cinemas, Andrzej Wajda’s name is synonymous with endurance and an ability determine and answer the most pertinent questions asked by his fellow Poles and other Europeans at a given historical time. Before capitalism and the market had their evil way, it was characterised by a deep sense of a fractured national identity and by an extraordinarily sharp idea of how a tragic history affected ordinary people. This renaissance, in the Stalinist 50s, was substantially due to the emergence of a world-class director in Andrzej Wajda, whose wartime trilogy of A Generation, Kanal and Ashes and Diamonds remains one of the finest achievements of Eastern European cinema. A Generation is about a group of young men and women fighting in Occupied Poland; Kanal is the terrible story of the final, abortive Warsaw uprising. But arguably the greatest in the trilogy is Ashes and Diamonds, in which Zbigniew Cybulski became a star - almost a European James Dean.
