Lars von Trier x 6 His abundant cinematic references (and it matters little if you spot them or not) are not part of some juvenile postmodernist tinkling, but an indication of how aesthetically far previous masters had got, such that von Trier's thoughtful cinematics should be seen on the same trajectory impressive *and* important. For each film I shall be attempting a short 'filmosophy' (and how do we move on in film talk if we don't try out new words how would cinema go forward if it didn't try out new images), an attempt to make the experience of his films resonate by talking about the cinematic tools that make his open eyed dreams impress. In the early hours of the morning a woman, sensitive to light, and living in virtual darkness, talks over the phone to another woman about her flight out of the city. _Images of a Relief_ (1982) Copenhagen, 1945, and a German officer, held by the Danish resistance, escapes to look up a woman he knows. Inside Esther's house the film finds him a calmer golden green, sitting on the floor, stroking her cat Massada. The film continues to find what he sees, pulling back to the record player, down to the light from the doorway, up to the returning lovers, before catching the light from the chandelier or from the glass on the ceiling. But with Esther's accusations the film moves with her, before ushering up images of female criminals. By now Leo is imagining far ahead in the glint from a shard of glass, and Esther is suggesting their escape by car, which the film montages with another car being trapped by angry crowds.

Nicole Kidman is returning to Cannes on Monday with her latest film, Dogville, directed by former Palme d'Or winner Lars Von Trier. It is proving to be one of the festival's most highly-anticipated films, not least because both Von Trier and Kidman have had some recent high-profile successes. Lauren Bacall plays a character called Ma Ginger Kidman, whose film Moulin Rouge opened Cannes in 2001, won an Oscar this year for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours, while Von Trier won Cannes' prestigious Palme d'Or in 2000 for Dancer in the Dark, which starred the singer Bjork. Dogville is also provoking intrigue because of the way it was filmed - it has just one stark set - a simple theatre stage with few props and chalk marks on the floor. It tells the story of Grace, a beautiful fugitive on the run from gangsters who arrives in the isolated township of Dogville in the US Rockies.

Un'interessante prospettiva di analisi La storia di Selma,contrariamente a quanto dice chi sostiene la realtà e la possibilità della vicenda,raccoglie in sé tutta una serie di topoi (la povera immigrata,la povera immigrata cieca,il lavoro in fabbrica....) che si sedimentano sulla voluta prevedibilità dello sviluppo narrativo e dell'intreccio drammatico, eliminando, man mano che il film procede, ogni pretesa di immedesimazione (questo non preclude evidentemente il coinvolgimento). La storia, con la sua oleografia, accostata alla sospensione del reale ed all'accettazione dell'inverosimiglianza che il musical come genere richiede, fa si che proprio la prima veda crollare la propria pretesa di veridicità, di concordanza,su cui si basa la comunicazione nel vissuto.

Lars von Trier wants Danes to vote 'yes' in their euro-referendum
Award-winning director Lars von Trier is to shoot a campaign film to encourage his fellow Danes to adopt the euro. Denmark will hold a referendum on whether to join the European Monetary Union and adopt the European Union's single currency in September. The critically-acclaimed director of Breaking The Waves, The Idiots and Bjork vehicle Dancer in the Dark, wants Danes to vote "yes". Von Trier and his film company, Zentropa, have dropped their fees for the film, which is being made for the pro-European Danish party Centrum Demokraterne. Euro-sceptic "Trier and I find it important that Denmark's cultural scene participates in the euro debate," Zentropa chief Peter Aalbaek said on Monday.
Bjork and Lars von Trier both won awards for Dancer in the Dark
Of the 15-member EU, only Denmark, Sweden and the UK opted not to adopt the euro when it was launched in January 1999. Euro-scepticism is strong in Denmark with recent opinion polls showing more Danes against the common currency then in favour of it.

Es sollte in diesem Film nur "Gutes" geben. Aber weil "das Gute" oft mißverstanden oder mit etwas anderem verwechselt wird, weil wir ihm so selten begegnen, entstehen Spannungen. Bess' Charakter ist "gut" in einem spirituellen Sinn. Sie lebt überwiegend in der Welt ihrer Vorstellungen, ohne jemals zu verstehen, dass noch andere Dinge als "das Gute" existieren könnten. Sie ist eine starke Persönlichkeit, fähig, die volle Verantwortung für ihr eigenes Leben zu tragen, auch wenn andere ihr das nicht zutrauen. Bess' Stärke resultiert aus ihrem Glauben und ihrer Liebe.
