Il primo ad incontrarla è Tom Edison, che propone agli altri quattordici abitanti della cittadina di ospitarla, per due settimane, in prova; al termine di queste decideranno se tenerla con loro o mandarla via. Le due settimane scorrono veloci, Grace aiuta tutte le otto famiglie del paese e si guadagna il loro rispetto e la loro amicizia, quando arriva lo sceriffo della città più vicina ad attaccare un manifesto in cui Grace risulta ricercata. Tutto prenderà una diversa via: i suoi "amici" cominceranno a pretendere da lei favori sempre più pesanti, fino ad arrivare allo sfruttamento ed oltre. Raccontato così, "Dogville" potrebbe semplicemente sembrare un film di denuncia sulla cattiveria profondamente radicata all'interno dell'animo umano, che sa rispondere solo col ricatto a chi è stato corretto e disponibile; se tutto questo è certamente vero, altrettanto reale è il fatto che Lars Von Trier, regista non nuovo alla sperimentazione, ha scelto un mezzo scenico davvero particolare per narrare la sua storia. La città di Dogville è in realtà una piattaforma teatrale sulla quale le case, le strade, i muri, gli alberi, sono tracciati con il gesso bianco sulle tavole nere dell'impiantito; anche Mosè,il cane di una delle famigle, è un'inquietante sagoma bianca tracciata all'interno di un recinto altrettanto inesistente.

Credit: Rolf Konow/Zentropa Entertainment Continuing his stubborn, aesthetically pathbreaking ways, Lars von Trier has produced, in "Dogville," a masterpiece that is nearly unwatchable. The film, which showed in competition here in Cannes , lasts just under three hours, and, since it takes place entirely on a gigantic, virtually empty stage, perversely tries viewers' patience from beginning to end. Another trying and even frightening thing about "Dogville" is that its politics, or better, its anti-politics, tend toward the fascist and are, at the very least, dangerously regressive. (The least of it is that it's also militantly anti-American.) Luckily, it also stars a sublime Nicole Kidman , luminous here in her most challenging role to date, and is made by the man who is probably the most brilliant director working in cinema today.

By Jack Stevenson hardcore action in his 1998 film, The Idiots And he was hardly the first to confront subtitle-reading aesthetes with the reality of the old in-and-out, as art film classics like Oshima’s In The Realm of the Senses by Oshima and Pasolini’s Salo already included much more sustained, not to say deviant, scenes of sexual explicitness. Context is everything. These are art films, and art films have dignity and significance, or so everyone assumes. In debating the release of The Idiots in the U.K., British censors acknowledged this and passed the film. Von Trier , they reckoned, was an artist with masterpieces like Breaking the Waves behind him, not a pornographer. And pity the poor punter down in Soho dressed for rain and cruising stacks of adult videos only to pick out The Idiots Censors saw the film as art, while viewers and critics saw it to varying degrees as either von Trier’s most honest movie or his most cynical, but for reasons other than his handling of sex and nudity. Von Trier himself would characterize the hardcore scenes as an attempt to draw a genuine portrait of the spiritual and physical life of the mentally handicapped. A “porno film” it was not.
