Transcript of the interview with actor Jim Varney Best known for his work as Ernest P. Worrell in a series of commercials and movies He was recently in Montreal, Canada filming SNOWBOARD ACADEMY The interview was aired on Tuesday, April 2, 1996 conducted by Peter Anthony Holder, the evening open-line talk show host on CJAD 800 AM , Montreal. CJAD: Jim, you're here working on this movie, SNOWBOARD ACADEMY, just north of Montreal. I'm curious to know. You've done a lot of things. People are familiar with you as Ernest, but you are a classically trained actor, are you not? JIM: Yeah, I started in theatre. I apprenticed at the Barter theatre in Virginia and did summer stock for a long time before I ever got in front of a camera. CJAD: The thing I'm getting at is that with a classically trained actor as yourself, people know you as Ernest. People know you as some of the kind of goofy characters you play. Do you find sometimes when you go to casting directors, especially in New York and L.A., they hear the good old boy southern accent and they go, "oh, there's only one thing this guy can do." Has that been a problem? JIM: Well, it almost became a problem on BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, because Jed Clampett was basically a straight man and most of the comedy takes place around him. He's sort of the patriarch. And Penelope Spheeris had to go to the studio and say, "well, you know I want Jiim Varney to play this" and they all went, "well, is the audience going to associate with the Ernest character?" So I had to go out and test. The first time in my life I had to do screen test. I did a very straight scene in the screen test and Fox was satisfied. It can be, to play one character too long, especially a comedy character.

He was 50. Varney died of lung cancer, said his attorney Hoot Gibson. Varney became a cult figure in the 1980s in a series of regional commercials, portraying Ernest P. Worrell, a now-it-all good ol' boy whose best-known phrase was "KnowhutImean?" and who addressed a character known as "Vern." In the commercials, he got his fingers slammed in a house window, fell off a ladder and got electrically shocked fooling with a broken TV set. He plugged a variety of sponsors, including dairy products, car dealerships, pizza and radio stations. "Ernest is a neighbor or relative that we've all had at one time," he once said. "He's abrasive, but he doesn't mean to be. He gets excited and ends up standing on your toes. I try to make him clownish and I don't want him too low key; and he's physically funny." Worrell (the "P" is for "Powertools) generated millions of dollars from television commercials, radio commercials, a television series and a handful of feature films based around the character he made famous. The Ernest fans were out there and the success of the character for over 20 years proves that point. On Thursday, February 10, 2000, Jim Varney succumbed to lung cancer at age 50. He leaves behind him a legacy of admittedly ridiculous laughs that will continue to remind us how truly funny Jim Varney - and Ernest - really was. Here's a confession: My brother and I are long time, die-hard Ernest P. Worrell fans. A lot of people said that Ernest was just for kids. Well, if that's the case, then Doug and I are kids at heart. The Ernest movies always gave us at least one belly laugh and that laugh always came courtesy of the hysterically funny Jim Varney. Doug laughs until he cries when Ernest's pet turtle snaps at his nose in "Ernest Goes to Camp." And my sides nearly split as Ernest chewed on a leaking pen during jury duty in "Ernest Goes to Jail." The Importance of Being Ernest Actor Jim Varney emerges from career struggles stronger than ever By Beverly Keel Actor Jim Varney has met a lot of children in the last few years, but he remembers them all. Perhaps it's because, to a one, they respond so openly to his alter ego Ernest P. Worrell, delighting in his contagious enthusiasm and relating to his childlike innocence. Even if Ernest is a nationally recognized figurethanks to nine movies and more than 4,000 commercialsto these kids, he is a playmate. He's a beloved fixture, a pal they can watch on videotape whenever they need comfort or companionship. But he's also proven to be a true, flesh-and-blood friend many times over: When given the chance to have a lifelong dream fulfilled by such groups as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, several hundred terminally ill children have asked to meet Ernest. And he's never let them down. Perhaps the most memorable was the 8-year-old girl who wanted to have breakfast with Ernest, even though she could only be fed through an IV. Donning his Ernest getup of a gray flannel T-shirt, a denim vest, khaki hat, and blue jeans, Varney met the girl for breakfast at Disney World. "I got her a set of post earrings with her birthstone because she had just gotten her ears pierced," he recalls. "She asked her mother if it would be all right if she could wear them in her casket so she could wear them to heaven. "I just made a surprise call from Ernest to a kid last week, and he sounded just fine. About two days later, we found out he didn't make it. But there's a thing about kids: They accept things a lot of the time better than adults. It was a big thrill [for them] that Ernest was on the phone. You think, wow, I hope if I've got two days left that I can get excited over a phone call."
