The Atomic Punks will play an entire weekend of shows in So Cal this weekend, starting with Friday, August 19th at Velvet Jones in Santa Barbara, and ending on Saturday night at Central Park in Valencia, CA. For Friday's show at Velvet Jones, doors open at 9:00 PM, and the Punks should take the stage at 10:00 PM, so plan to get there early just to be safe. Tickets are $10. This is a 21 and older show. On Saturday, August 20th, the Punks will take part in the "Concerts in the Park" series at Central Park in Valencia. There is no charge for the show, and it's a family event, so feel free to bring out the kids and enjoy some Van Halen while you sit in a beautiful park environment. The show will go from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. The band advises everyone that if you want to get a decent parking spot, try to get there by 5:30 PM, so you won't have to walk far to get to the park. It can be a little bit of a walk if you show up 30 minutes before showtime, the shows tend to draw 5,000 people or so. Should be a great weekend of shows, so everyone come out for two great nights of classic Van Halen. The band thanks you for your continued support.

One of Sammy Hagar's many fine back-up bands. special introductory paragraph! '77 + Live Van Halen II ... Best Of Volume One M an, did they ever start off awesome. Total party-hearty rock and roll machine, with this crazy guitarist making all these dive-bomb noises and hammer-ons and whangy bar shakes and harmonics and stuff, elevating mere guitar rock to an intricate, innovative, and imminently intriguing itchycoo icicle. Plus, the singer was this wacky larger-than-life cartoon of a womanly man who was always doing gymnastics during concerts and talking between verses and wearing crazy colorful clothing and he had a really neat voice too! It was low and sorta dopey-sounding at times, but he could do these high-pitched Slayer-esque squeal things that just drove the kids wild, and he sounded like a real pal most of the time, albeit a really arrogant pal. And the melodies? Well, they were always good, and often great, especially when enhanced by Edward Van Halen's wildass creative lead guitar verve that you've probably heard lots about in your short life. Unfortunately, singer David Lee Roth quit in 1984, the other guys replaced him with screamer Sammy Hagar, Eddie made his guitar tone really wussy and chorusy, and within a few years, their songwriting had deteriorated to the point that they were basically churning out dull adult pop along the lines of Survivor, but without that band's charm or charisma. Just recently, they replaced Mr. Hagar with some guy from Extreme, but.... Jeez. Just read on.

Rather than some cleverly comic moniker, the latest tour's title matches that of the band's latest album: Van Halen III. New lead singer Gary Cherone sports a buzz cut instead of the copious locks of blond hair favored by his two predecessors, and while he incessantly roams around the stage like any good frontman, you won't catch him performing any mid-air splits off the drum riser. Lack of posturing aside, Van Halen is still a big, loud rock band that has every intention of living up to its legendary live performances. Though not given the license to blow anything up or to lend his expertise with lasers to the tour's design, veteran LD Howard Ungerleider (Rush, Queensryche) has created a striking habitat that allows both the band and the designer to look good and have fun.
