MEDIA MAN: Ted Turner's Improbable Empire.
    By Ken Auletta.
Atlas Books/Norton, 205 pp. $22.95. In the beginning were ABC, NBC and CBS. Those three powerful networks in New York City ruled the airwaves as television developed as an information medium in the 1940s, '50s, '60s and into the '70s. Then along came Ted Turner, a modern-day media pioneer who changed the television landscape worldwide by developing a 24-hour station called Cable News Network, or CNN, and led the way in establishing cable broadcasting nationwide. In Media Man veteran media writer Ken Auletta sweeps through Turner's rise and fall in the bruising roller-derby world of corporate media ownership. For this book, Auletta said Turner "opened himself up to me" in almost 20 hours of one-on-one taped interviews.

By BBC News Online's Tarik Kafala Ted Turner, the US media mogul and founder of international news organisation CNN, appears to have stumped up another big donation to the United Nations. According to officials in Washington, Mr Turner is prepared to personally pay the $34m shortfall between what the US owes and what Congress is willing to authorise. In 1997 Mr Turner set up a $1bn UN foundation, the biggest private gift the UN had ever received. The foundation administers a $100m donation every year over 10 years. The donation was widely seen as a vote of confidence in the UN's future by one of the world's leading businessmen and opinion makers. Turner also likened the network's current popularity to Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1930s Germany. "Just because you're bigger doesn't mean you're right," Turner said in a speech to the National Association of Television Programming Executives. Fox News, owned by Rupert Murdoch, is currently leading CNN in TV ratings. Mr Turner also attacked "gigantic companies whose agenda goes beyond broadcasting" for not criticising the Bush administration enough. 'Problems' "There's one network, Fox, that's a propaganda voice for them," the 66-year-old media mogul said. "It's certainly legal. But it does pose problems for our democracy when the news is 'dumbed-down'." Fox News issued a statement, saying: "Ted is understandably bitter having lost his ratings, his network and now his mind - we wish him well."

"If I had to predict, the way things are going, I'd say the chances are about 50-50 that humanity will be extinct or nearly extinct within 50 years," Turner said. "Weapons of mass destruction, disease, I mean this global warming is scaring the living daylights out of me." Returning to the city that was home to the CNN and Turner Broadcasting companies he founded, Turner was the featured speaker at the Associated Press Managing Editors international coverage seminar. Turner spoke to editors from 10 regional states and admitted he may not be very good at making predictions.

In her spellbinding autobiography, "My Life So Far," Fonda reveals that she made the religious conversion without telling her husband of almost eight years. "I hadn't told Ted beforehand because by then I didn't feel we were on the same team," she writes. "Alongside the frantic life we shared, I was living a parallel inner life, where I took care of my own needs ... I also knew that if I had discussed with him my need for spirituality, he would have either asked me to choose between him and it or bullied me out of it." Fonda writes that her religious conversion coincided with the realization that Turner had never stopped cheating on her.

ATLANTA (AP) - CNN should cover international news and the environment, not the "pervert of the day," network founder Ted Turner said Wednesday as the first 24-hour news network turned 25. Turner, an outspoken media mogul who started CNN in 1980 but no longer controls the network, said he envisioned CNN as a place where rapes and murders that dominated local news wouldn't be emphasized, but he's seeing too much of that "trivial news" on the network he created, now second in ratings to Fox News Channel. "I would like to see us to return to a little more international coverage on the domestic feed and a little more environmental coverage, and, maybe, maybe a little less of the pervert of the day," he said in a speech to CNN employees outside the old Atlanta mansion where the network first aired. "You know, we have a lot of perverts on today, and I know that, but is that really news? I mean, come on. I guess you've got to cover Michael Jackson, but not three stories about perversion that we do every day as well."

The announcement came just shortly after the company reported a net loss of $98.7 billion for 2002. Those results included a $45.5 billion fourth-quarter charge related primarily to depreciation in the value of its America Online unit, as well as a first-quarter charge of $54 billion in accordance with accounting rules changes that took effect last year. Revenue for the fourth quarter increased 8 percent, to $11.4 billion, from the same period last year, compared with Wall Street estimates of $11.2 billion, according to a consensus of analysts polled by First Call Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBIDTA) for the quarter rose 16 percent, to $2.8 billion, on the strength of double-digit growth at all of the company's divisions, except for AOL, where EBITDA declined. EBIDTA is one of the most closely watched measures of the performance of media companies.

'Commie Dictator' Castro Inspired CNN, Ted Turner Admits Jim Burns, CNSNews.com
Friday, Nov. 30, 2001
Ted Turner, founder of Cable News Network, said it was Cuban "commie dictator" Fidel Castro who inspired him to broadcast CNN into other countries around the world. Castro invited Turner to visit Cuba in 1982 after a CNN news team visited the communist nation. "We spent all night drinking and smoking cigars," Turner told a convention of cable television operators meeting in Los Angeles on Wednesday. "He told me CNN was invaluable to him. And I thought, if Fidel Castro can't live without it, we ought to be able to sell CNN all over the world. So the idea came from a commie dictator," said Turner. After his 1982 meeting with Castro, Turner commented: "Fidel ain't a communist. He's a dictator just like me." Castro returned the compliment, saying several times that he received news of the Soviet Union faster from CNN than he did from the Soviet government. The Cuban-American National Foundation, no friend of the Castro government, said Castro uses CNN as a "propaganda tool." According to CANF, most ordinary Cubans don't ever see the network.

Ted Turner's new investments in Patagonia
A few years ago, multimillionaire Ted Turner bought his first hectares, not so many by the way, in Patagonia. At that moment, he announced that it was the beginning of a dream: La Primavera Estate (Spring) was to be devoted to pleasure and relaxation in the middle of an outstanding, beautiful landscape. Although they are barely 4,500 hectares, the spot it is set is not contemptible at all. It is one of the privileged accesses to the Traful river, an unbeatable place for the fishing of trouts and salmonidae in general, situated 60 kilometers to the north of Bariloche. Since he bought this first property, Ted Turner founded a private enterprise in the USA called La Primavera Argentina (The Argentine Spring).
