Presents Last of the Red Hot Mamas About Sophie Tucker Born Sophie (or Sonia) Kalish-Abuza on January 13, 1884 in transit between Russia and Poland. A legendary performer of generous proportions, brassy and dynamic, who claimed to be "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas." The daughter of Russian parents, Sophie was taken to the USA when she was three years old. By the time she was 10 years old, Sophie was a singing waitress in her father’s cafe in Hartford, CT, and in 1906 she moved to New York to work at the Cafe Monopole, the German Village Cafe, and then in burlesque, vaudeville, and cabaret. Sometimes, because of her plain appearance she was persuaded to work in blackface, and made a reputation as a "Coon-Shouter" in the ragtime era. After a teenage marriage failed (as did two later marriages), she added "er" to her ex-husband’s name of "Tuck" to create her new stage name. In 1909 she played a small, but telling part in the Ziegfeld Follies. By 1911 she was a headliner, and was able to drop the dreaded blackface for good. In the same year she made her first recording of the song which was to become her life-long theme, forever associated with her: Some of These Days was written by composer-pianist Shelton Brooks, who also wrote The Darktown Strutters Ball . Other hits around this time were , and Knock Wood . When jazz music became the new craze during World War I, Tucker became known as "The Queen of Jazz" and toured with the band "Sophie Tucker and Her Five Kings of Syncopation."

32. Sophie Tucker
Essay on her life and career, by Carrie McLaren.

Sophie Tucker
Last of the Red Hot Mamas
by Carrie McLaren Last fall when making the round of local used record stores, I came across an album by Sophie Tucker. "I'm Bigger and Better Than Ever," Sophie seemed to be shouting, her 80-ish year-old face open wide on the cover. For $8, it was even autographed. Clearly Sophie was past her prime, but since albums weren't around during her vaudeville days, I gave it a shot. Shortly thereafter, the gutsy model of ahead-of-her-time-feminism became my hero. What some would no doubt call novelty or camp was music to these ears: songs like "You've Got To Be Loved To Be Healthy," "Aren't Women Wonderful," and "I'm Living Alone (And I Like It)." My quest to learn everything led me back to 1884 when a three- month-old, Russia-born, Sophie Abuza made her debut in America. Settling in Hartford, Conn., her parents opened a small restaurant and Sophie grew up working there, occasionally singing for tips. At 16, she eloped with Louis Tuck and later gave birth to a Bert. Unfortunately, Louis never got around to getting a job. Once their money ran out, Sophie ended up back at the restaurant, supporting all three. Working in a restaurant, however, wasn't Sophie's calling. Divorcing Louis and leaving Bert to her parents' care, she fled to New York to try her hand at entertaining. Pretty radical for an orthodox Jewish woman at the turn of the century. Her first break came in 1906, sometime after changing her surname to Tucker. She was offered a small-time theater slot on one condition: because she was so "big and ugly," she had to appear in blackface. Fairly desperate, Sophie agreed and ended up touring the vaudeville circuit as a "coon shouter." Though successful, she continually tried to ditch the blackface act. So when her costumes and makeup failed to arrive in time for a show one night, Sophie risked going on without a disguise. Fortunately, the crowd loved her.

Sophie Tucker Brown Brothers (1884-1966), entertainer Born on January 13, 1884, somewhere in Russia as her mother was on her way to join her father in the United States, Sophie Kalish grew up in Boston and then in Hartford, Connecticut, where her mother ran a restaurant. Her father had changed the family name to Abuza after his arrival in America. From her childhood she wanted to be an entertainer, and she began by singing in the family restaurant, in part to escape waiting on tables and dishwashing. In 1906 she changed her name to Sophie Tucker and landed a few singing jobs. Her actual professional career began in 1906, when, after a successful amateur appearance, she opened in a blackface routine at the old Music Hall in New York City. In 1909 she appeared with the Ziegfeld Follies Tucker's first appearance at the Palace Theater in New York City, which was considered the summit of success in vaudeville, came in August 1914. It was in 1928, at the Palace, that she was first billed as "The Last of the Red-Hot Mamas." She also appeared in numerous editions of Earl Carroll's Vanities and the Shuberts' Gaieties and in such shows as Louisiana Lou Round in Fifty in London Charlot's Revue (1925), with

"Last of the Red Hot Mamas": vaudeville entertainer She was born in Russia while her mother was emigrating to America to join her husband, also a Russian Jew. Her birth name was Sophia Kalish, but the family soon took the last name Abuza and moved to Connecticut, where Sophie grew up working in her family's restaurant. Playing piano to accompany her sister at amateur shows, Sophie quickly became an audience favorite; they called for "the fat girl." At age 13, she already weighed 145 pounds. She married Louis Tuck in 1903, and they had a son, Bert, but she divorced Tuck fairly quickly. Leaving Bert with her parents in 1906, she went to New York, changed her name to Tucker, and began singing at amateur shows to support herself. She was required to wear blackface by managers who felt that she would not otherwise be accepted, since she was "so big and ugly" as one manager put it. She joined a burlesque show in 1908, and, when she found herself without her makeup or any of her luggage one night, she went on without her blackface, was a hit with the audience, and never wore the blackface again.

There were reviews and articles about burlesque where she was mentioned. In many ways, Lois and Sophie were similar. As a young girl in New York, Lois did Sophie impersonations, even winning a talent contest at camp for singing Some of These Days Some of These Days , written by black songwriter Shelton Brooks.
