BURGESS Managing Editor The Coast Guard has fulfilled a promise made two years ago to name a cutter after its first chief journalist, the late Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alex Haley. The former Navy salvage and rescue ship Edenton (ATS 1) has been converted into a 282-foot medium-endurance cutter and commissioned in the Coast Guard as the USCGC Alex Haley (WMEC 39). The new cutter is believed to be the first U.S. military ship named for a journalist. Haley, famed for his best-selling book Roots , served in the Coast Guard for 20 years, beginning in 1939 as a steward and retiring in 1959 as a chief journalist. Haley, who started writing as a hobby, was valued by his shipmates for his talent in "ghostwriting" love letters for them. His writing talent was recognized with an assignment to the Coast Guard's public affairs office in New York. After retiring from the Coast Guard, Haley continued his writing career and also worked to promote literacy and education. He died in 1992. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater was the keynote speaker at the 10 July commissioning ceremonies at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Md. Also in attendance were Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), Coast Guard Commandant Adm. James M. Alex Bosworth's Weblog August 21, 2005 Podcasting I've been hearing a lot about podcasting, podcasting this, podcasting that, listen our podcasting, you gotta check out podcasting. Podcasting is generating attention from a lot of people, especially media pundits, who all seem to claim that podcasting is the greatest new thing you should be checking out since the invention of fire. So I took a few minutes to check podcasts out on various podcasting websites, where I discovered a bunch of boring junk shows that I didn't want to listen to, and then I said ok this is overhyped. But I was too hasty. Instead of judging the basic idea of podcasting, I looked at the current offerings as if it were a product, which is the wrong approach. Podcasting is not a product, it's a publishing movement, much like blogging, powered by RSS and compressed multimedia formats like MP3 instead of blogging software and HTML. Podcasting is actually a subset of blogging, as it's stream of regularly updated content that can be published by anyone, it just happens to be audio/visual content. Once I figured this out, I became a big fan of the idea of podcasting. Blogs have become basically my entire news and entertainment source. Blogs offer micro-targetted content about things that I care about, other sources of news and entertainment waste my time by panding to the masses.

Recently I spent a few days with my best-friend Emily and we talked about being together when we were younger and all the crazy, fun, harmless things we did. And what we realised is that we were never, ever bored and that we never did anything with regard to how it would turn out, what people would think or what benefit it would give. There wasn't too much self-thought that went on - we were far too busy doing. We just simply tested ideas, saw the world, learned about life through action, messing up, and having fun. There was no self-analyzing, no dissecting, no therapy, talking about it all or looking for validation to see if we were right. It was just pure fantastic living - something I miss and want that back. And to do that, I had to understand what the difference between now and then was: the web. It's not just the authors who perpetuate this; readers keep going out of habit, perhaps wanting attention too by posting comments that really don't offer anything but a sign they were there and participated or because they live vicariously (no! no! never live vicariously!). Readers of personal sites are suffering malnutrition; just surfing to surf, partake to partake, chat for the sake of chatting. Not really paying attention to what's going on or stepping back to see if it's still useful to them. This, in turns, feeds all the self-indulgent writing - writers think people are interested simply because they had a hit or two and continue to write about their breakfast, what they want to do, how therapy went or how Tommy was an ass at prom.
