Over 3,500 attend SPIE's 15th AeroSense Symposium in Orlando
The SPIE AeroSense symposium, the premier international military and aerospace symposium for sensors, algorithms, electronics, and simulation, was held 16-20 April 2001 in the Orlando Marriott World Center. Component and system designers supporting these technology areas found fertile technical interaction at AeroSense 2001. Discussions and interactions on both spin-on and spin-off commercial activities continued as an important element of this symposium. AeroSense included technical conferences on phenomenology; sensor components and systems including electro-optical, infrared, laser radar, passive millimeter wave, and radar; processing of sensor data for image exploitation and target recognition; communications and network centric warfare; displays and symbology; guidance and navigation; and modeling, simulation, and visualization.
2001 AeroSense Exhibit
This year's symposium offered the return of several highly popular conferences as well as new topics providing a forum for stimulating and vigorous technical interaction. A new conference on Component and System Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Health Management was well attended. The Infrared Technology and Applications conference which provided a week-long review of the latest in infrared components and sensor systems included a special session entitled "Infrared in Russia: a 10-year Update" with talks prepared by the leading infrared scientists and engineers in Russia. In addition, the biennial Window and Dome Technologies and Materials conference was standing room only for both days of oral presentation sessions. Outstanding and very well attended conferences were held on such topics as Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Unattended Ground Sensors, Enabling Technology for Simulation Science, Data Mining, and many others.

Customer Reviews of Edge of the Moon (Berkley Sensation)
Customer Rating: Review Summary: Review: I didn't like EDGE OF THE MOON as much as I liked its prequel, KILLING MOON. The second novel in a suspenseful/romantic werewolf series, EDGE OF THE MOON is about cop Jack Thornton and graphic designer Kathryn, who become pawns in a deadly battle between a magician and the demon he intends to enslave. The magician wants to sacrifice Kathryn as part of a ceremony to take control of the demon, while the demon uses Jack and Kathryn to protect it from the magician. It's actually a creative and fascinating idea for a paranormal romance ... unfortunately, the story didn't appeal to me. For one, I felt the story dragged at the beginning and spent too long setting up the plot (and, while Jack was a fascinating and sympathetic character in Book #1, the issues revolving around his kids became boring in this second novel). In addition, I questioned the sexual tension between Kathryn and Jack, as I didn't feel it was clarified that it WASN'T the demon who made them hot and bothered for each other. Ross the werewolf also appears in this book, but his character isn't used very well as a secondary character (I was also surprised Ross admitted to Kathryn that he was a werewolf without knowing her, when it took him forever to tell the truth to his lover in Book #1).

Edge of the Moon by Rebecca York (Berkley, $5.99, PG-13) ISBN 0-645-19125-7 In Edge of the Moon , Rebecca York writes about a contemporary America just like the one you and I live in, with only a few, little…well, maybe not so little…paranormal quirks. Although those quirks are vital to her story, they are all the easier to believe in because they are few and because they are grounded in a realistic suburban setting. Jack Thornton describes himself thusly,”’I’m not a glory hound. I’m just a working stiff detective…’” from Montgomery County, Maryland. He was working on a possible domestic murder case when his captain pulled him off and sent him off to interview a woman who called in a missing person. This is the fourth missing person report in a relatively short period of time, and the captain has a hunch that they are related. Kathryn Reynolds designs advertising brochures, working out of the second floor apartment in her house. She rents out the first floor apartment to Heather DeYoung. Heather is her friend as well as her tenant, so when the weekend is over and Heather hasn’t come home, Kathryn starts to worry and finally calls the police. Her initial contact with the police is routine, but then Captain Granger sends Jack Thornton to investigate more thoroughly. Kathryn opens the door to Jack, and a lightening strike of lust arcs between them. I’ve read many a romance where the author has her lovers feel the heat the first time they meet…not that easy to make believable. In

NEWS- Columbia tragedy: local astronaut looks ahead Published February 6, 2003 in issue #0205 of The Hook MARY JANE GORE MJGORE@ADELPHIA.NET For one Central Virginian, news of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster on Saturday hit particularly close to home. Kathryn C. Thornton, former astronaut and now assistant dean and professor in the UVA School of Engineering, completed her final mission in space on the Columbia shuttle on November 5, 1995. She is reticent about her own feelings for the human cost of the shuttle program, the Columbia and Challenger tragedies. Her first flight aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1989 came just three years after the Challenger disaster, so no doubt safety was a personal concern on her travels. Thornton knew three of the astronauts aboard Columbia's last flight, which began disintegrating 207,000 feet above Texas on February 1. "They had just entered the program and were doing their training. We overlapped by a year. I spoke with them, but I didn't spend a lot of time with them," she recalls before falling silent.
