The Rescue Of Intelsat-VI 603
Manual capture of the Intelsat VI by astronauts Thuot, Hieb, and Akers 5/92 It was March 14, 1990 that the International Telecommunications Satellite Consortium (INTELSAT) launched the third of five Intelsat-VI satellites atop a Titan-3 rocket. Each is cylandrical, nearly twelve feet in diameter and 17.5 feet in height. At the time of this writing, this series makes up the largest commercial spacecraft ever launched. All five satellites have a life of thirteen years and are built to maintain communications from a geosynchronous orbit With this launch, however, the second stage of the rocket failed to separate from the satellite due to faulty wiring between them. This left the satellite in an orbit too low and too unstable for it to be of any use. Controllers from the ground needed to work quickly to prevent the satellite from re-entering the atmosphere where it would have completely incinerated. They jettisoned the second stage by releasing the perigee kick motor, which would have been used to send the satellite into its proper orbit. Ground controllers then used some of the satellite's limited supply of propellant to boost it into a somewhat higher and certainly safer orbit while NASA engineers discussed possibilities for how to proceed. After much discussion, NASA elected to salvage the satellite using the space shuttle, finding it the most cost effective way to remedy the situation. perigee kick motor to the satellite and release it using timed springs once the two were safely back in the cabin of the shuttle. Ground controllers would then activate the kick motor and send Intelsat 603 from a height of 200 nautical miles to a height of 22,300 nautical miles.

Former NASA astronaut Kathryn Thornton is honored for her science leadership.
By Anne Bradley As a college student, former NASA astronaut Kathryn Thornton says that physics intrigued her. "We actually got to do things," she says. "You could crash cars together and calculate the energy." Thornton has carried this attitude through her twenty-five year career in physics, and she is now the recipient of the AeroSense Honoree of the Year 2001 award. Thornton received the award at SPIE's AeroSense Symposium banquet in April for her consistent and courageous leadership in science and engineering at both the government and academic levels. Thornton received her bachelor-of-science degree in physics from Auburn University (Auburn, AL) in 1974, a master-of-science degree in physics from the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA) in 1977, and a doctorate of philosophy in physics from the University of Virginia. In 1979 Thornton was awarded a NATO postdoctoral fellowship to continue her research at the Max Planck Institute (Heidelberg, Germany). She returned to Charlottesville in 1980, when she joined the U.S. Army's Foreign Science and Technology Center as a physicist.

Famous Girl Scout Alumnae in the USA
"I think the most enduring lesson I was taught through my experiences of being a Girl Scout was that I was a member of a larger community. I out-grew my uniforms and badges years ago, but the memories of visiting nursing homes or organizing Earth Day tree plantings or my summers camping with girls from all different backgrounds will stay with me always." Girl Scouts of the USA has impacted the lives of more than 43 million women since its inception in 1912. As the world's preeminent organization for girls, GSUSA has long contributed to success among girls and women by offering opportunities for personal and leadership development, exposure to role models, and community involvement. In order to better understand what success means to the women of America and what role Girl Scouting plays in their success, GSUSA According to the study, Girl Scout alumnae have "strong positive memories" of a number of important experiences offered through Girl Scouting - such as trying new things, working with a group to accomplish a common goal, setting and achieving goals, and doing good things for the community. Most Girl Scout alumnae believe that experiences in Girl Scouting had a positive effect on their adult lives. Below is a listing of American women who have achieved success in their career field (and who were Girl Scouts growing up)

E-mail: kt4n@virginia.edu After traveling more than 16 million miles in space, Kathryn Thornton joined the faculty in 1996 as a professor with appointments in the Division of Technology, Culture and Communication, and in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She is also director of the University of Virginia Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education whose goal is to promote excellence in science, mathematics and technology education at all levels in Virginia’s public schools. She earned a B.S. in physics from Auburn University and M.S. and Ph.D. also in physics from the University of Virginia.
Prior to coming to UVa, Thornton served for 12 years as NASA astronaut, flying four space missions, including the first Hubble Space Telescope Service Mission, and logging more than 975 hours in space and over 21 hours of extravehicular activity (space walking). She holds the women’ record for both number and duration of extravehicular activity. Dr. Thornton also headed the NASA Johnson Space Center Education working group which coordinated the educational outreach activities of astronauts and professional educators working under the ”Teaching from Space” contract with Oklahoma State University. Videos, printed materials and live events with school children and astronauts in orbit were some of the products of the group.

Meeting Highlights
Jan. 11-15, 2003
The 1000 participants registered for the meeting were drawn by the excellent program that included invited and contributed paper sessions, poster papers, workshops and tutorials, and the opportunity to volunteer their services in support of the association and the greater physics community. In addition to attending the physics programs, attendees had sufficient time to visit 62 exhibit booths and to meet with friends and colleagues in the pleasant atmosphere provided by the Austin Renaissance Hotel.
AAPT Provides Structure for Advances in Physics Education
Much of the role of creating a strong meeting program and examining issues of importance to the physics community rests with the AAPT Area Committee chairs and the 18 Area Committees. Both the outgoing and incoming chairs from many of the committees met on the Saturday prior to the AAPT meeting. President Elect Charlie Holbrow and Vice President Jim Nelson reviewed and discussed the responsibilities of the Area Committee Chairs, much of which is outlined in the Area Chairs Handbook ( http://www.aapt.org/aboutaapt/handbook.cfm
