  • Autopen machines often vibrate when they are in use creating a very distinctive "shaky" signature. Click here to see Examples of shaky signatures that these machines often produce. Autopens come to an abrupt halt at the end of a letter and frequently leave a noticeable spot of ink at the ends of letters and words. Lines in the Autopen are of the same thickness. Autopens do not always create identical signatures, if the item being signed is moved accidentally (or deliberately) small differences will be noticeable in the final signature. Small variations from known Autopen patterns does not mean the signature is authentic, if - when you ignore the variation - other parts of the signature match the Autopen pattern exactly, then what you are looking at is an Autopen. One thing that must also be kept in mind is that the use of pens with thicker or narrower nibs will make them appear very different - until you examine them closely and compare them to known Autopen patterns.

    Associate Counselor
Hired: August 2004 What led you to WTC?

I had been living in New York City for about a year and a half when I decided that I would like to get back to Texas and put to use my Master's from The University of Ireland in Galway.  I knew I wasn't necessarily interested in teaching but liked the idea of being attached to a college and being involved with students in another capacity.  When I heard that the Associate Counselor position had come open here at WTC, I felt it was a great opportunity for me professionally as well as something I could really enjoy.  So, I pretty much hopped on a plane home and gave it a go. Where do you go from here?
I'm more interested in learning my job here and settling into a more laid back way of life for a while.  For the last eight years I have pretty much taken life a year at a time, giving me many opportunities to have exciting experiences.  I'm more interested in being in the moment here at WTC. Most memorable moment?

    Discovery Still In Orbit

Former astronaut Kathryn Thornton, on The Early Show Monday (Photo: CBS/The Early Show)
(CBS) When NASA chose to forego landing opportunities Monday and keep shuttle Discovery in orbit until at least Tuesday morning, it undoubtedly set off a chain emotions in the crew, according to former astronaut Dr. Kathryn Thornton.
While "there's no bad day in space," Thornton told co-anchor Rene Syler on The Early Show Monday, "I think they were probably disappointed. They've already had one extension on this mission. They were suited up, strapped in and ready to come home and see their families. So I would think it would be a bit of a disappointment to them."
There's plenty involved in suiting up, Thornton explained. The crew members have to put on their launch-and-entry suits, and they "have a layer of thermal underwear under that. They have to strap in. They have oxygen lines and communication lines that have to be hooked up. And it's a bit of work to get that set up. Now they have to take it all down, prepare for another night in space and set it up again (Tuesday)."
Are there any things they stowed for landing that would have had to be taken back out?

Thornton has been on four space shuttle missions, and is the record holder of the most space walks by an American female astronaut. In the 1980s, as an U.S. Army physicist, Thornton worked on solving problems associated with spaceflight, but only within the confines of her office. Thornton earned her physics degree from the University of Virginia and from Auburn University. While stationed and working at the Army's Science and Technology Center (Charlottesville, Virginia), Thornton read an announcement from NASA: "looking for space shuttle program recruits."

Seven astronauts, all women, were honored for their contributions to the study of space last night by the Explorers Club, a professional society of explorers and researchers. The black-tie affair was emceed by Hugh M. Downs, an anchor on ABC's 20/20, and included a speech by NASA's chief scientist Dr. Kathie L. Olson. "I want to recognize the true explorers we are here honor tonight the women who are the essential part of our astronaut corps," Olson said. "It's your courage and determination that are inspiring an entire generation of girls." The honored astronauts included Dr. Mary Cleave, Dr. Bonnie J. Dunbar, Dr. Rhea Seddon, Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan, Dr. Kathryn C. Thornton and Dr. Tamara E. Jernigan. Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, was honored but did not attend.

Thornton, payload commander, works at the Drop Physics Module (DPM) onboard the Spacelab science module located in the cargo bay of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. Thornton, along with four other NASA astronauts and two guest researchers, spent more than two-weeks aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in support of the United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-2) mission. STS073-229-014 (20 October - 5 November 1995) - Astronauts Kathryn C. Thornton, payload commander, and Kenneth D. Bowersox, mission commander, observe a liquid drop's activity at the Drop Physics Module (DPM) in the science module aboard the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. The drop is partially visible at the center of the left edge of the frame. The two were joined by three other NASA astronauts and two guest researchers for almost 16-days of in-orbit research in support of the U.S. Microgravity Laboratory (USML-2) mission. STS073-230-014 (20 October - 5 November 1995) - Astronaut Kenneth D. Bowersox, commander, uses a camcorder to record United States Microgravity Laboratory 2 (USML-2) activities onboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. Nearby, astronaut Kathryn C. Thornton, payload commander, prepares to open a supply chest to support one of many science experiments conducted by the seven-member crew during the 16-day USML-2 flight.

    Justice delayed.
Background Karla Faye Tucker had a difficult childhood, her father had given up on her as a child and her mother died from the effects of drug abuse on Christmas Eve 1979 when she was 20, ending her relationship with the only person, whom she said, had always really loved her.
She too had got into hard drugs and her mother got her into prostitution at the age of 14.
It is a sadly common story in murder cases - a young person gets into drugs and then into crime after a poor or disturbed childhood. The murders On June 13 th
Karla knew Dean who was the estranged husband of her best friend. She disliked him as he had once parked the motorbike in her living room and let it drip oil onto the carpet. He had also destroyed her only pictures of her mother.
When they entered the apartment they found Jerry Dean asleep. Garrett attacked Dean with a hammer. Dean was making a gurgling sound so Karla finished him off with the pick axe. "I just wanted to make the noise stop," she testified at her trial. Then she noticed 32-year-old Deborah Thornton cowering under sheets in a corner. She had had a row with her husband and met Dean at a party earlier that evening. Hyped up on the drugs and the killing of Jerry Dean, Karla attacked Deborah Thornton with the pickaxe, raining numerous blows into her body and finally leaving the pick axe embedded in her torso. The pair stole Jerry Dean's money and car before they left.
