Walter Benjamin, "Surrealism," 1929 Open Letter There have been significant social changes in the United States over the years–women are more active in public life, the black middle class has grown, and queer youth are likelier to find allies. But this is also a country overshadowed by an anti-democratic system of bipartisan corporatism, and by recurrent campaigns of sexual and cultural backlash. Racism remains a foundation stone of our class and penal system, and people of color remain among those last hired and first fired. Some will always be tempted to reinvent Social Darwinism–to explain class divisions of all kinds as one form of "natural law." That explanation came from religious authorities in the past, but nowadays the explainers must have other kinds of power and prestige. "You can’t stop progress," shout CEOs driving global SUVs, and they always have reasons why other folks are road-kill. The dictum that knowledge is power is not always cause for optimism. "Information technologies" such as computers are not simply tools of universal enlightenment they are also means of production, for better and for worse. The product may be the projection of corporate advertising and of military threats over national borders. The degree to which useful information is enmeshed in state and corporate disinformation makes the computer as ambiguous a machine as the television. This grows clearer not just year by year but by the hour. The production of minds receptive to both technical training and class division is therefore of prime importance to any corporate system of education.

Scott was born at Harris Methodist Hospita l in Bedford, Texas on March 18, 2003 at 8:55 pm to Darlene and Troy Davidson. He weighed only 5.9 ounces, and was at that moment both the greatest joy, and the greatest sorrow that his parents have ever known. Scott was stillborn, delivered in only his 20th week due to a tragic twist of genetic fate known as anencephaly . This condition, whose cause is generally unknown, prevents portions of the skull, and sometimes the spinal cord, from developing properly, condemning its victim to inescapable death. Although his life had passed before we ever laid eyes on him, we loved our son from the moment we knew about him, and treasure each moment we had to spend with him, knowing in our hearts that he is waiting for us even now in heaven, our little angel. ACCTG 416: Accounting Theory (Term I) ACCTG 702: Topics in Accounting Research (Term II) Research Interests My teaching and research interests are primarily involved with financial accounting and reporting, although I have taught and researched managerial accounting issues as well. More broadly I am interested in investigating financial reporting alternatives from the perspective of individual firms, standard setters, and various users. My initial published research investigated economic incentives for the timing and extent of pension reporting by American and Canadian firms. My interest in financial reporting has led me toward broader research into the role of accounting and the accounting profession in society. My teaching has corresponded well with my research interests since I have taught the accounting theory course since coming to Alberta. In this course the emphasis is on placing accounting in a broader economic context by emphasizing economic rationales for why accounting is the way it is. More recently, my work in pension accounting has led me into the broader area of management compensation. I have recently completed an extensive literature review of this area that is being published in the next issue of the Journal of Accounting Literat ure. I am also conducting empirical research in the management compensation area on the efficacy and appropriateness of alternate compensation mechanisms and appropriate measures of performance, allowing me to integrate financial reporting and managerial accounting issues.
