ShirleyTempleBlack.jpg Shirley Temple Black was a former child actress and United States diplomat Shirley Jane Temple (born April 23 ), later known as Shirley Temple Black , is an American film actress and diplomat who is considered by many to be the most famous child actress in history. Born in humble origins in Santa Monica, California , one of her first film roles was in Bright Eyes , for which she won a special Academy Award . It was in that film that she sang " On the Good Ship Lollipop "; though she often sang in her films, that was probably her most famous song. She subsequently starred in many films including Heidi , Poor Little Rich Girl, Dimples The Little Colonel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm , and Curly Top . By the mid- she was the biggest box-office attraction in motion pictures, and the success of her films may have saved more than one major studio from bankruptcy during the Great Depression. The role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz , played by Judy Garland , was originally intended for her.

Shirley Temple Brown Brothers (1928- ), actor and diplomat Shirley Jane Temple was born in Santa Monica, California, on April 23, 1928. At age three she was picked from her dancing class to appear in Baby Burlesks, a series of one-reel comedies. In 1934 she gained recognition in her first feature film, the musical Stand Up and Cheer, and later that year appeared in a succession of movies, including Little Miss Marker, Change of Heart, Now I'll Tell, Now and Forever, and Bright Eyes (in which she sang one of her most popular songs, "On the Good Ship Lollipop"). By the end of 1934 she was one of Hollywood's top stars, and the following year she received a special Oscar as "the outstanding personality of 1934." She was Hollywood's top box office attraction in 1935, 1936, 1937, and 1938, with such hits as The Little Colonel Curly Top Wee Willie Winkie Heidi (1937), and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938). Her spirited singing and dancing, her dimples and blond ringlets, and the simple optimistic sentiments of the films in which she appeared proved enormously appealing, perhaps in part by contrast with the era of the Great Depression that was her heyday. In the 1940s, however, Temple's popularity declined and subsequent movies were largely unsuccessful. In 1950 she retired from the movies and married Charles A. Black. She later made a brief return to entertainment with a popular television show

Shirley Temple was born into a Protestant family. She was raised as a Protestant and was a Protestant as an adult. Her maternal grandmother was a staunch Lutheran. Temple began starring in movies at such an early age, that film acting as largely the only culture and religion she knew while she knew until she was an adult. Although Shirley Temple's mother identified their family's denomination as Presbyterian, it seems that as both a child and an adult, Shirley Temple had far more experiences with Episcopalian churches. As an adult she frequently went to St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Los Angeles. Notes below are from Shirley Temple's autobiography: Shirley Temple Black, Child Star: An Autobiography , Mcgraw-Hill (1988). Child Star , page 183: Father Silvio Massante, OSJ, was dispatched by the Catholic Church to investigate allegations rampant in Europe that Shirley Temple was not a child, but was actually a 37-year-old midget. The priest interviewed Shirley Temple and her mother for an hour. The priest asked what denomination they belonged to. Shirley Temple's mother explained that they were Presbyterian, but "in Santa Monica it was easier to go to a nearby Episcopal church." Sometimes they also went to a small village church, and Shirley Temple's mother was somewhat flustered when she could not answer what denomination that church was affiliated with. The priest asked the mother what Shirley Temple was taught, and her mother explained that she was taught about God and the Bible.

Charles Black, husband of child star Shirley Temple Black, dead at 86
By JEREMIAH MARQUEZ, Associated Press Writer (Updated Thursday, August 4, 2005, 9:05 PM) LOS ANGELES (AP) - Charles Black, a businessman, maritime expert and the husband of former child star Shirley Temple Black, died Thursday of complications of a bone marrow disease, his wife said. He was 86. Black died at his home in the San Francisco suburb of Woodside, with his wife of 55 years and other family members by his side. He had suffered from the bone disorder myelodysplastic syndrome for nearly three years. The couple met in 1950 in Honolulu, where Black had been working for a shipping company. They married that same year. "He was an intensely interesting and fascinating man to me," Mrs. Black, a former U.S. ambassador to Ghana, said by phone from her home Thursday night. "I fell in love with him at first sight. It sounds corny, but that's what happened. But I don't think he did with me." Mrs. Black, 77, was 22, when she and her husband met.

Seaborg's Comments
Dr. Seaborg first met Shirley Temple when he and a few friends from UCLA wandered onto the set of "Now and Forever" while hiking around Lake Arrowhead. He met her again years later at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco when he was presenting the robot "Topo" developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science. On the picture she wrote, "Regards to Topo."

SPAIN: The Civil War and Shirley Temple
Shirley Temple Black lives near here. Born in 1928, she was only eight when the Spanish Civil War broke out, but she was already a famous film star. Doing research for the printed version of my book on my experiences in Spain during that period, I consulted The Spanish Civil War by that famous WAISer Hugh Thomas. Describing the situation in Madrid in late 1936, he says this in his account of the morale of the workers and government forces there: "Shirley Temple in The Little Colonel , which was shown in Madrid at this time, had an effect on tactics of which Captain Liddell Hart might heen proud. The greatest possible success was also enjoyed by Groucho Marx, who was represented as a Colonel in Duck Soup . Looking very like a Spanish regular officer, he remarked before a map: 'A child of three could solve this problem'. A pause. 'Fetch me a child of three'. The militiamen on leave from the Sierra found this relevant." I wonder if Shirley Temple Black realizes that she had an influence on the military strategy in the Spanish Civil War.

    A Tribute to Shirley Temple
Shirley Temple Black, who celebrates her 77th birthday on April 23, 2004, is no longer a child star, but at one time she was the most popular actress in America for five years in a row! Shirley would be the first to admit that her film career pretty much ended after 1949. In fact, of the 69 films and TV movies she appeared in, 60 of them were filmed between 1932 and 1949, more than half of those before 1937, when she turned the ripe old age of 9! She received a special Oscar in 1934 for her contribution to screen entertainment. So this tribute is primarily to the little girl who made so many people happy during the Depression, with her smile and her dancing and her precociousness rather than to the woman who was once a delegate to the United Nations, ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia, and White House Chief of Protocol, in a career that lasted 27 years, much longer than her film career. You can see a glimpse of the little girl's future in the photo above, as she sits with America's most distinguished First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1938.
