WHY GLORIA SWANSON IS ALWAYS BROKE
This article was originally published in Theatre Magazine, Vol. 29, No. 5 . Ed. Arthur Hornblow. New York: Theatre Magazine Company, 1919. p. 304.
ALTHOUGH Gloria Swanson appreciates the honor of playing the leading feminine rôles in productions, she has discovered that there are certain difficulties also in the work. Her first appearance was in "Don't Change Your Husband," and she is next to be seen in "For Better, For Worse." "YOU see," she said, "since I have been working for Mr. DeMille I am always broke. Before I came to him I had plenty of money to do with as I pleased, but I haven't it any more. I have to economize on all sorts of little things. And I don't like it." "All my salary goes for clothes or furniture. I buy much more expensive clothes than I should; much more expensive than I ever did before. And I am always buying chairs and pictures and things for my home. I used to be quite satisfied with the simpler things in garments and house furnishings. Where I will finish I don't knowprobably in the poor house. Unless some one takes me in charge and curbs my wild extravagance I shall become a State charge." "IN both of the pictures I have made so far I have been a rich womanrich even to millions. And as Mr. DeMille loves realism and refuses to do anything half way, he has made me wear gowns that are just simply gorgeous."

Swanson, Gloria Swanson, Gloria, , American movie actress, b. Chicago. Swanson began her film career in 1913, displaying an elegant comedic style in a series of films for director Cecil B. DeMille. Financed by Joseph Kennedy, she produced her own films from 1920 until 1929, including Sadie Thompson (1928) and Queen Kelly (1928). Although she made an easy transition to sound movies, she retired in 1934. She made a celebrated return in Sunset Boulevard (1950), portraying an aging, half-mad, silent movie queen. She made only three more films, but enjoyed continued success on television. Swanson appeared on Broadway in a revival of Twentieth Century (1952) and in Butterflies Are Free The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

Gloria Swanson Home Films Links Credits ... Email Gloria Swanson was born Gloria May Josephine Svensson in Chicago, Illinois on March 27, 1899. She grew up an Army brat, and because of this her family lived in many different places during her childhood. As a child, Glora went to public schools in Chicago, Key West FL, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. After completing her formal education, she began work in a department store as a sales clerk. At the age of 16, she decided to go to a Chicago movie studio with an aunt to see how motion pictures were made. Swanson found extra work at Chicago's Essanay Film Mfg. Co. in 1913. While there, she met and married Wallace Beery and came with him to Hollywood in 1915. Under contract to Mack Sennett's Triangle-Keystone studio, Swanson became leading lady to diminutive comedian Bobby Vernon in tworeelers such as The Danger Girl (1916) and Teddy at the Throttle (1917) . Slapstick comedy was not to her liking, so when Sennett joined Paramount, Swanson was thrilled with the chance to return to Triangle as a dramatic star. She found success in films like
