Philanthropy: It's a family affair for the Feldbergs "Philanthropy has been an important part of my life," says Sumner L. Feldberg '45, MBA '49, retired board chairman of the TJX Companies and BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. in Framingham, Massachusetts." It's an activity I inherited from my father and uncle, who were very charitable; they had a significant influence on me. Philanthropy is part of our family tradition. Over the years, I have often talked with my children, Ellen and Michael, about giving. I stressed two things to them. First, give to the causes you care about and where you have some involvement. Second, the best tax shelter is the charitable deduction, and the gift of appreciated stock makes a lot of sense." Sumner is active with the Class of 1945 and has been deeply involved in Harvard affairs for many years. He has created a scholarship fund at the College and funded a professorship at the School of Public Health. He has also established a professorship at the College in memory of his parents. Currently, he is on the advisory board of the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

In Memory of
J.D. Mayhew
On Friday, February 13th renowned artist J.D. Mayhew passed away at his home in Northern California. J.D. was a longtime friend of Captain Paul Watson and a very close friend of Sea Shepherd Advisory Board member George Sumner and his wife Donnalei. Captain Paul Watson asked that George Sumner read the following at the memorial for J.D. to be held in Fort Bragg, California on February 17, 2004: "J.D. Mayhew was a man who shared with only a few others the understanding that dwelling in the sea are beings of deep and profound intelligence and graceful beauty, and whereas I have the honor of defending them at sea, I honor also those few gifted artists who have managed to capture the soul of leviathan and to convey it to humanity in a way that motivates a compassion and an empathy with the monarchs of the seas. The whales and dolphins have lost a champion, an ambassador and a friend and if there is such a thing as reincarnation, J.D. is out there now amongst those he loved and respected and now sees the world through the eyes of his beloved cetaceans. May he be remembered for his talent, for his art and his legacy but most of all may he be remembered as one who was able to bring the mind in the waters to humanity with beauty and honesty.

The City Council for 1882-83, consists of A. McLain, J. W. Dobson, M. H. Bennett, C. W. Willett and William Corsine. A postoffice was established at this point in 1871, and C. H. Stone kept it in his log store building, the first in the town site. Stone was succeeded by G. W. Robinson, John A. Blair, John H. Sain, John A. Blair, a second term and S. Donaldson the present Postmaster. The business of the office has been transacted in the old log store, Sain's drug store, at the corner of Fourth and Main, Fifth and Main, the Hubbell building and a store near Sixth and Main streets, where it remained until November, 1881, when it was removed to its present quarters. The first money order was issued on April 15, 1881, and transferred money from S. W. Dutton, of Caldwell, to Susie Dutton, at El Dorado. The office became a Presidential one, July 1, 1881.

Dr. George Huntington and the Disease Bearing His Name
by John P. Conomy, M.D., J.D. Dr. George Huntington and the Disease Bearing His Name
by John P. Conomy, M.D., J.D.
On what must have been a chilly winter day, February 15, 1872, Dr. Huntington, a young family practitioner of the small Ohio River city of Pomeroy, Ohio, traveled over the bleak countryside five miles to the larger town of Middleport, Ohio to address the local medical society, composed of physicians of sparsely populated Meigs and Mason Counties. His brief, uniformly anecdotal and entirely unreferrenced address, not suffering publication delay, was put eight weeks later in the Medical and Surgical Reporter of Philadelphia (v 26, no. 15, April 13, 1872). This has become one of the classical descriptions of neurological disease. George Huntington dealt with hereditary chorea as a reminiscence of his childhood spent on the eastern extremity of Long Island (New York), where, as the son and grandson of physicians, he recalled patients from his father's practice. The hereditary chorea, as he called it, was a rare but terrible disease. Its essential features, tersely noted by Dr. Huntington in three short paragraphs, included a "hereditary nature," a "tendency toward insanity" and "its manifestation as a grave disease in adult life." He also commented on the grotesque nature of associated abnormal movements and the lack of knowledge of both the cause and cure of the disorder.
