HISTORY OF MT. STORM COMMUNITY
(in Grant and Mineral Counties, West Virginia) Prepared by D. W. Idleman
PREFACE It has occurred to the writer that before the means of reaching facts recedes into the more distant past, that some one should make an effort to write the best history possible of Mt. Storm Community. He has committed himself to this task with the hope that some benefit at least may result therefrom. Man is not wholly living in the present. Life is only a sort of threshold where memories of the past and anticipations of the future meet and intermingle. Human society everywhere today has grown largely out of past experiences and these experiences greatly influence present and future activities, A knowledge, therefore, of present and past history is interesting and profitable. Local history is not only interesting to the community, but touches and influences the current of national life. It is as the mountain springs and streams are to the mighty river - the source from which the river derives its power. It is always interesting and fascinating to historians and inspiring to children. The story of every community especially during our pioneer period, is full of brave, daring, heroic deeds of the plain, modest, struggling, common people - men who made no pretense to fame but possessed high qualities of industry, frugality, and purpose.

The Meaning of Chasing
by T.J. Turnage - Midland, Texas
Storm chasing is a pursuit of more than just storms. The first time I got in a car for the sole purpose of chasing thunderstorms was shortly after I moved to Midland, Texas. Here was a logical place to start. Midland is located in the Permian Basin of Texas, which is part of the typically flat High Plains. The sky is a dominant part of the scenery, and visibilities are incredible. Perhaps that is why thunderstorms often look so majestic here. My first chase was with a colleague who has chased storms with his brothers for years. His expertise was obvious - he knew where to go, what to look for, and what to expect. This impressed me greatly. It was apparent that his experience with chasing storms made him a more knowledgeable meteorologist. As a meteorologist myself, I want to learn more about storms by observing them. Being a meteorologist is not a prerequisite for storm chasing, but the desire to learn about storms is. What is it about storm chasing that appeals to me? It is often a stressful and exhaustive undertaking that demands long hours and many miles of driving, with little time to rest, eat, or use the bathroom. However, it turns out that storm chasing is always an aesthetic, unique, and educational experience. This is what makes it worthwhile.

F-5 Storm Shelters and Fallout Shelters are designed by a structural engineer. Our storm shelters and fallout shelters meet or exceed all of the F.E.M.A guidelines. Both our storm shelters and fallout shelters have corrosion protection that can triple the life of the shelters over many of our competitors storm shelters and fallout shelters. Spring is tornado season in the South with 50% of all tornadoes occurring between the months of April and June. Most tornadoes occur between noon and sunset. However, tornadoes are unpredictable, and can occur any time, day or night, January through December. The eastern 2/3 of the United States has the greatest concentration of tornadoes on earth. Thunderstorms and their attendant tornadoes typically move northeasterly or easterly, but tornado tracks can be erratic. Tornadoes move forward at speeds ranging from nearly stationary to 60 M.P.H. or more. Measurements from the Doppler Radar give top speeds in the 250-300 M.P.H. range.

Dansk. Skiftede til kemistudiet. Dumpede. Kom i hæren i et par år. Genoptog danskstudiet, fik en forprøve. Blev redaktør for Hasselbalchs science fiction-serie.
    Samtidig freelance journalist og radiomedarbejder.
Bogdebut 1971 med "Miriam og andre".

    Fall 2002
Walking up the path to the Administration Building one recent August morning, a thundercloud opened and rain came pummeling down on the leaves, ground, and me. Trail lights began to flicker on as the sky darkened. The thudding I heard from within my own protective shell of a raincoat was blending into the world around me. I was not simply walking to my job, but I felt distinctly a part of this rainy ridge top world. I stopped before entering and watched the rain for a few minutes. This brought back distinct memories. I could see my younger self sitting beneath the porch and watching the awesome power of a summer storm. Occasionally my siblings and I would race to the end of the driveway, touch the mailbox, and run back. Of course we ran without raincoats, and the goal...well, there was no goal. We ran because we wanted to be a part of the storm. Wolf Ridge has many goals. One of the main components of my job is working with over 170 school groups, trying to coordinate their schedules, fulfill their requests, and (as part of the larger team at Wolf Ridge) trying to deliver a quality educational program to the students, visiting teachers, and adult chaperones that attend. It is natural to set some high standards for the educational program. Look at one of the lesson plans and you will notice an outline, background information, time frames, activities, games, and Minnesota graduation standards. A lot of time and effort has been put into these classes because we have our own goals. Visiting teachers have their own goals when they bring a group of students to the campus, too. A quality educational experience is one of our shared goals.
