SOUTHLAND, Texas (AP) Thick, reddish-brown dust swirled over parts of West Texas, contributing to a series of traffic accidents that killed two people and injured dozens of others. As many as 30 vehicles crashed Thursday on U.S. Highway 84 between Southland and Post, about 20 miles southeast of Lubbock, said Cpl. John Gonzalez with the Department of Public Safety. A New Mexico truck driver and his wife were killed in a crash that injured at least 11 others, authorities said. Both sides of U.S. 84 were closed for several hours Thursday afternoon as authorities from several agencies worked to clear debris. Because of poor visibility, authorities urged drivers to avoid major highways south of Lubbock until the dust subsided.

More snow in Rockies; storms in Plains
Satellite image taken Friday at 7:02 a.m. EDT (AP) Heavy snow lingered over higher elevations in the Rockies early Friday, while thunderstorms were predicted to strike a large part of the Plains. The forecast called for a repeat of heavy snow in areas of Colorado that were blanketed with nearly a foot on Thursday. Scattered locations were expected to experience accumulations of more than 6 inches Friday. The disturbance that caused to snow in the Rockies was expected to combine with a front over the Plains to bring rain to a large area of the nation's midsection. Storms in western Texas and western Oklahoma had the potential to be severe, with rain up to 2 inches and wind reaching 60 mph. Other storms were forecast in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and southern Wisconsin. In the East, a cold front was forecast to spawn showers and storms in the Northeast and southern Great Lakes region. A ridge of high pressure contributed to warm and mild weather in the South, although the southern Florida peninsula and parts of the mid-Atlantic and central Appalachia were expecting showers.

Storms in East, chill in central states
Satellite image taken Thursday at 8:32 p.m. EST Story Tools Rain and thunderstorms soaked the Ohio and Tennessee valleys and the mid-Atlantic on Thursday, while the nation's midsection tried to ward off an unseasonable chill. Most of the West stayed dry. Heavy rain also fell on southeastern Florida, with more than 3 inches in West Palm Beach. Tennessee and Virginia saw more than an inch in some areas. Temperatures in the central states stayed about 10 degrees below normal as far south as Oklahoma, with snow flurries near the Canadian border. Montana, Wyoming and Idaho even reported some subzero temperatures. Partly cloudy skies spread over much of the West but the only rain in the region was scattered across northern California and southwestern Oregon. Skies were also cloudy across much of the Great Plains, Great Lakes, New England and the Gulf states. Temperatures in the lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a morning low of minus-9 in Yellowstone and Big Piney, Wyoming, to a midday high of 85 degrees in the Florida cities of Naples and Cross City.
