Dot Album Discography, Part 1:
10-inch LPs and 7-inch EPs
By David Edwards and Mike Callahan
Last update: May 6, 2003
The 10" LP format was popular in the early and mid-1950s, but became less popular as the 12" LP took over. Like most record companies of the time, Dot issued 10" LPs until about 1955, when the bottom dropped out of 10" LP sales. The 7" extended play 45 rpm record was popular in the late 1950s, but by the early 1960s was dead. The stereo single lifetime lasted even shorter time. It began in early 1959 and was over by mid-1960.
The label on the 10 inch record series was maroon with silver printing. "Dot" in silver script above the center hole, "LONG 33 1/3 PLAY" and "DOT RECORDS, INC. * GALLATIN, TENNESSEE" at the bottom of the label. The Dot 100 series were issued as 10 inch records initially, although at least one, the Eddie Peabody DLP-110, was reissued as a 12 inch record with a number of songs added, but keeping the same catalog number.

It's an enormous topic, which 20 years ago looked like a shadow on the horizon, just as about a hundred years ago what later became relativity theory was just two little shadows on the horizon of physics, and blew up to become major developments. In genetics it's fair to say that about 20 years ago a cloud on the horizon was our knowledge that there were so-called selfish genetic elements in various species that propagated themselves at the expense of the larger organism. The Portland Gale
    November 26-27, 1898
On the evening of Saturday, November 26, 1898, New England was struck by the most destructive storm the region had ever experienced. The gale killed over 200 persons and wrecked or sank at least 140 major vessels. The best-known victim of the gale was the coastal steamer Portland , lost off Cape Cod with 191 people aboard. The steamer gave her name to the storm, and has since been memorialized in New England folklore and legend. This photo feature looks at the ships and events of that terrible storm, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the event. The storm started quietly on the evening of the 26th of November, with a light but strengthening wind. Within hours it had grown to hurricane proportions and was creating havoc all along the coast. The winds raged all through the night of the 26th, all day on the 27th, and did not subside until the 28th, some 36 hours after the storm had started. Winds were clocked at up to 72 mph in Boston, and were probably even stronger along the coast southeast of Boston, especially on Cape Cod. To call the damage widespread is a vast understatement. Houses were blown over and washed away all along the coast from Cape Cod to Portland, Maine. The coastline was littered with the wrecks and wreckage of dozens of vessels, large and small, smashed or sunk by the fierce winds and seas. In Provincetown harbor alone over 30 vessels were blown ashore or sunk. Damage along Boston's south shore and Cape Cod was probably the worst; telegraph lines were brought down, railways washed out, and even the low scrub trees of Cape Cod were blown away. In Scituate, a small coastal community 30 miles south of Boston, the coastline was permanently altered when mountainous waves cut a new inlet from the sea to the North River, closed the old river mouth, and reversed the flow of part of the river.

    99. The Storm King: Pacific Northwest Weather Events
The Spring gale of March 27, 1963 storm King I, July 30, 2004. The February 5, 1965 gale storm King II, July 30, 2004. The Strong October 2, 1967 gale
The Storm King Some Historical Weather Events in the Pacific Northwest compiled by Wolf Read, Climatologist I, Oregon Climate Service Left: March 20, 1995, 15:00 ZULU. This bad boy compelled the National Weather Service, Portland, to post this warning at 10 PM PST March 19, 1995: " ..HIGH WIND WARNING FOR THE COAST TONIGHT AND MONDAY... "HIGH WIND WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR THE OREGON COAST. WINDS ALONG THE COAST WILL INCREASE TONIGHT AND BECOME 35 TO 45 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 75 MPH IN THE NORTH AND NEAR 90 MPH IN THE SOUTH AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT. WINDS HAVE ALREADY GUSTED TO 40 MPH AT SEA LION CAVES...59 MPH AT GOLD BEACH...AND 94 MPH AT CAPE BLANCO." T he above storm is a very potent form of midlatitude cyclone. Many have struck the West Coast within the relatively short period of meteorlogical record. These systems can match a Category 3 hurricane in both minimum central pressures and sustained wind speeds. Such storms have a reach far beyond that of a typical hurricane: they can throw a cold rain into the Alaska Panhandle while at the same time pummel the San Francisco Bay Area with a warm, saturated gale. These tempests are killers, and can cause damage into the hundreds of millions, even billions. The focus of these web pages is on midlatitude cyclones; though, as weather and climate contain varied and diverse phenomena, other types of events are also examined. This website is here to dispell certain weather myths. There seems to be an idea that severe weather somehow doesn't strike the Pacific Northwest. This seems to be largely an eastern misconception. For example:

    100. April 23, 1943 Windstorm
Strong gale of April 23, 1943. compiled by. Wolf Read Maximum Pressure Tendencies for the April 23, 1943 storm. Location
Strong Gale of April 23, 1943 compiled by Wolf Read
T he year 1943 was visited by the rare April windstorm, and this one fairly late in the month, on the 23rd. The low center moved in out of the southwest and passed very close to Tatoosh Island, perhaps just to the south, on its way inland. A very strong pressure surge accompanied the passage of the low at Tatoosh, along with a heavy thunderstorm. The low was at least a 994 mb storm, and a very potent one at that. Compared to many windstorms, this central pressure doesn't seem very high, but history bears out that these lows can be fairly destructive. Cyclones with a similar depth caused significant Pacific Northwest gales on November 15, 1994 and February 7, 2002 , among others. For Washington coastal stations, April was the most unsettled month of the 1942-43 season! The U.S. Department of Commerce Weather Bureau reported, in the Monthly Meteorological Summary publication for North Head, Washington, April 1943: "There were eight gales during the month, five of them coming during the last half. It was the stormiest month of the 1942-43 season. On the night of the 22-23rd the most severe April storm of record struck North head shortly after 11 p.m. A southeasterly wind during the evening became southerly and rapidly increased to gale and hurricane proportions. An average velocity of over 60 miles per hour was maintained for over
