Gale Storm's career encompasses much more she has maintained a very successful recording career, in addition to her motion picture, theatre, night club, and television performances. Gale Storm was born Josephine Owaissa Cottle in Bloomington, Texas. While in her junior year at San Jacinto High School, Gale was persuaded by a dramatic teacher to enter a national radio contest called " Gateway to Hollywood". It was this contest that first brought Gale into the professional acting ranks with a trip to Hollywood, a motion picture contract at RKO and the name, "Gale Storm." Gale Storm made her debut on records in the fall of 1955 on Dot Records. Within four months three of her songs were among the top twenty best sellers in the nation. How was Gale Storm, the singer, discovered? A ten-year old girl named Linda Wood , from the small town of Gallatin, Tennessee, happened to have the volume on her TV set turned up a little higher than normal one night while she was watching a Sunday night Comedy Hour Show. On this particular show, the host was Gordon MacRae, and the guest star was Gale Storm. While Gale was singing one of the popular songs of the day, the sound of her voice drifted into the dining room where Linda's mother and father were dining in the company of family friends.

May 23, 2000 Welsh Designated Visiting Humanities Scholar for ZaSu 2000 Film Festival Return to Press Releases Home Page SALISBURY, MD-Salisbury State English Professor Jim Welsh was recently designated visiting "humanities scholar" by the Parsons (KS) Humanities Council and the Kansas (State) Humanities Council for the ZaSu 2000 Film Festival held at Labette Community College in Parsons, KS. This was the third annual film festival held in honor of ZaSu Pitts who was born in Parsons. The celebrity guest this year was singer and actress Gale Story, who has worked with Pitts on The Gale Storm Show in television. The festival took place as scheduled, even though the week before the town of Parsons was devastated by a tornado that damaged or destroyed over 700 homes and wiped out half of the downtown business district. Welsh presented the keynote address, "The Darker Side of the Fifties," and participated in two panel discussions along with Dr. John C. Tibbetts of the University of Kansas. Tibbetts and Welsh have co-authored and co-edited six books dealing with theatre and film topics. The film festival was directed by Brent Bates of Labette Community College, who chaired the planning committee. The event was well organized and well attended, despite the considerable damage done by a tornado that had cut through the town.

Gale Storm, who played the lead, began her stage career by winning the Texas branch of a competition to play in Gateway to Hollywood . She met the winner of the same contest from Indiana and a year later they were married. Gale then decided to concentrate on raising a family before returning to the silver screen, where she appeared alongside well-known names of the day such as Donald O'Connor and Audie Murphy. Her co-star in the TV series was former silent movie star Charles Farrel who had appeared opposite Janet Gaynor in Seventh Heaven In an unusual move, My Little Margie began a radio series in December 1952, a little more than two months after the first TV series had finished, and then continued on both mediums throughout the rest of its run. Not, as one might imagine in radio versions of the TV episodes, but in completely new stories. Co-stars Storm and Farrell played the leads in both.
