Silicon Snake Oil
Second Thoughts on the Information Highway
by Clifford Stoll
Doubleday, 1995 A division of Bantam, Doubleday, Dell Publishing Group, Inc. Hardcover $22.00 Flap copy: Ah, the information highway. No phenomenon in modern times has received more attention, held out more promise, nor achieved more mythic stature than the information highway. This computer utopia is said to educate, entertain, and inform. It will supply us with vast amounts of information, put us in close touch with one another, and turn our fractious world into a global village. Not so, says Cliff Stoll. Stoll knows. He's the author of "The Cuckoo's Egg"the bestselling book about how he caught German spies prowling through computersand a genuine legend on the Internet. Involved with networks since their earliest days, Stoll has watched the Internet grow from an improbable research project into a communications juggernaut. He knows computers; he loves his networked community. And yet... Stoll asks: when do the networks really educate, and when are they simply diversions from learning? Is electronic mail useful, or might it be so much electronic noise? Why do online services promise so much, yet deliver so little? What makes computers so universally frustrating? Silicon Snake Oil is the first book that intelligently questions where the Internet is leading us. Stoll looks at our network as it is, not as it's promised to be.

The Cuckoo's Virus The hacker. The speed of light. The beauty of constraints. What is about Clifford Stoll that arouses such a need for conversation? Cliff Stoll is a lunatic in the sanest sense of the word. He doesn't so much present an argument as digest it with his mouth open. It's not pretty but somehow it works. My interview with Cliff Stoll remains the most requested of my One on One interviews. It's not hard to fathom why. He has been a prolific speaker and author. In this interview we discuss his first book, The Cuckoo's Egg. He subsequently went on to write Silicon Snake Oil and High Tech Heretic. People often ask me if I know his email address. I don't. One on One Clifford Stoll
Published, May 1993 I'm wearing a white hat, not a black hat: I don't write viruses. If your main interest is the identity of the spy, let me get that detail out of the way. The spy was a 27-year old German named Markus Hess whose address at the time he was arrested for espionage was #3A Glocksee Strasse, Hanover, Germany. To Clifford Stoll, the scientist who tracked the computer spy over a three-year period and wrote a best-selling book about it, this piece of information is very much a minor detail. Stoll is a scientist. Where other people saw a crime, he saw a science project. While some people were outraged, Stoll was fascinated. Sure he wanted to catch the spy, but only as the end product of rigorously tracing the spiderweblike filaments of deception back to their origin and narrowing his hypotheses.

Image of Clifford Stoll courtesy of ZDTV.com Clifford Stoll first came to national prominence in 1989 with the publication of his book, The Cuckoo's Egg , an amazing account of his search across the Internet to catch a German cracker who was breaking into military computers all over the world. Before the search was done, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Security Agency were involved. but Mr. Stoll was the one who finally tracked him down. The perpetrator was a twenty-five year old German hacker named Markus Hess who was selling US government secrets to the KGB for money and cocaine. Since the publication of that book, Mr. Stoll has been widely sought after for speaking engagements, and has written a second book. One wonders where he finds the time to pursue astronomy.

Mr. Stoll's idea is that some aspects of the World Wide Web may strip us of some of our humanity...if we let it.

SILICON SNAKE OIL
Second Thoughts on the Information Highway
By Clifford Stoll
Doubleday, 1995, 247 pages
This book has received a lot of attention, but whether or not it is merited is an open question. Stoll's commentary is not especially interesting or original and his goofy prose doesn't make up for the overall shortcomings of his argument. Silicon Snake Oil tries to pass itself off as a meaningful contribution to the ongoing debate over the role of computer networking in our lives, but at bottom it is about as shallow and ephemeral as most of what passes for discourse on the Net.

"Throw Away Your Computer and Get an Education"
Underwritten by: Huntington National Bank Listen to this lecture in RealAudio Does knowledge of computers equal a good education and a good job? Think again! Despite pressures for campus internet feeds in every venue, a quality education has little to do with computer and everything to do with the human interplay between student, professor and the body of knowledge. Yes, computers make it easy to look up facts and impress us with flashy graphics but they also discourage creativity. They encourage us to copy what we see or read rather than come up with our own ideas and conclusions. Clifford Stoll, a leading authority on computer security and noted author, questions the dependency of the digital age. Are we better informed? Is our electorate more active? Are our citizens more involved in our communities? Has this revolution spawned more problems or solutions?
