The Media Persecution of Martha Stewart
View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: the media and the public What makes a corporate villain in America today? Is it greed? Is it misused power? Is it a complete disregard for a company's workers?
Or is it a woman who built a business empire out of sharing her favorite hobby with millions of people, and one who MAY or MAY NOT have done something wrong in selling some stock in a company to save herself from losing $41,000?
Of course, the answer is the latter, according to the American media at least. We, the Undersigned, would not have supported Martha Stewart if the media had not viciously torn her apart, whether it was through television movies, tabloid covers, editorials or late-night TV jokes.
She was a woman who simply wanted to share her decorating talents with the world, or whoever cared at least. So she published a coffee table book. And then a magazine. And then a television show. No one HAD to buy, read, or watch any of her stuff it if they weren't interested in what she had to say, but they could, and many did. They WANTED to learn how Martha plans her dinner parties, how she creates her perfect desserts. And yet, people were annoyed by Martha, because she was a woman who had a magazine and a television show on something they considered stupid or trivial. They obviously didn't realize that it wasn't that hard to not buy the magazine or not watch the television show, and that Martha only intended her material to reach people who CARED.

Martha Stewart Discussion/Dec. 1997
Query From Michelle Moravec mmoravec@ucla.edu 15 Nov 1997 For a paper I am presenting at the American Culture Association, I would like to hear from fans of Martha Stewart about why they like Martha. Responses: From Charity Coker Bennett bennettc@fiu.edu 18 Nov 1997 I subscribe to Martha Stewart Living and I also enjoy her show. Although I am an historian, I am also very domestic. I appreciate the fact that Martha
Stewart promotes independence and an "I can do anything" attitude. Some people criticize her for doing everything so meticulously, but I believe that is one of her strengths. I often take ideas from her magazine and conform them to my own needs. From Diane Purkiss D.M. Purkiss@reading.ac.uk 18 Nov 1997 I'm not a fan, but I do have the cookbook. I like her in an entirely ironic, British way, I'm afraid; it's all so dreadfully earnest, so terribly serious. Your choices of canapes says so much about you! I've never encountered anyone so lacking in sprezzatura, and so overloaded with gravitas. There are so nay hors d'oeuvres in the book that you could open a catering company, and to me the fury of all those tiny, resolute, steely canapes, staring coldly across at the business guests, is at odds with the farm girl, folksy, carve-your-own-pumpkin stuff, the pioneer spirit. But maybe it isn't in America?

WHITE PLAINS, New York (AP) Martha Stewart's release from home confinement and her electronic anklet has been delayed three weeks to the end of the month, her lawyer has said. Attorney Walter Dellinger said in a one-sentence letter on Wednesday that the home-and-hearth marketing queen "has agreed to an extension of the terms of her home confinement until August 31." Those conditions include staying inside her home north of New York City except for 48 hours a week of employment, food shopping, doctor appointments and church. And Stewart must always wear the anklet, about which she has repeatedly complained, saying it irritates her skin. "I am not allowed to take it off at any time, and I am not allowed, while in my home, to have any padding under the strap," she once told fans during an Internet chat.

Stewart's destination, at least, is clear: A minimum security federal prison camp for women most likely the one in Danbury, Connecticut, (inmate population 235) where hotel magnate Leona Helmsley served time. But her sentence has yet to be determined. Nonetheless, some initial comments: It's plain that Stewart has already made some mistakes that will lead to her serving a longer sentence than she had to for her offenses. And if she is not careful, she may make additional mistakes that have the same effect.

Martha Stewart image coming under attack
(CNN) Martha Stewart's image has taken a beating lately. The homemaking queen, once associated with linens, housewares, decorating recommendations and perfectly crafted pastries, has found herself tarred with the scandal brush currently smearing Wall Street. Stewart sold several thousand shares of the ImClone biotechnology firm just prior to the company's announcement that the Food and Drug Administration was not going to approve an anti-cancer drug ImClone had been developing. ImClone's former CEO, Sam Waksal a friend of Stewart's was arrested June 12 on charges of insider trading and perjury. Stewart is being investigated but has not been charged with any wrongdoing. In her regular appearance on CBS's "The Early Show" Tuesday, Stewart said, "I think this will all be resolved in the very near future and I will be exonerated of any ridiculousness."

Martha Stewart
I tilsvarende kvartal i fjor tapte Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia 17,8 millioner dollar.
