Ben Stein's Last Column . . .
For many years Ben Stein has written a biweekly column called "Monday Night At Morton's." (Morton's is a famous chain of Steakhouses known to be frequented by movie stars and famous people from around the globe.) Now, Ben is terminating the column to move on to other things in his life. Reading his final column is worth a few minutes of your time. How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury
Be a Star in Today's World? As I begin to write this, I "slug" it, as we writers say, which means I put a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is "eonlineFINAL," and it gives me a shiver to write it. I have been doing this column for so long that I cannot even recall when I started. I loved writing this column so much for so long I came to believe it would never end. It worked well for a long time, but gradually, my changing as a person and the world's change have overtaken it. On a small scale, Morton's, while better than ever, no longer attracts as many stars as it used to. It still brings in the rich people in droves and definitely some stars. I saw Samuel L. Jackson there a few days ago, and we had a nice visit, and right before that, I saw and had a splendid talk with Warren Beatty in an elevator, in which we agreed that Splendor in the Grass was a super movie. But Morton's is not the star galaxy it once was, though it probably will be again.
Beyond that, a bigger change has happened. I no longer think Hollywood stars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendly people, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to.

Know Ben Stein's money
By Jay MacDonald
Author, actor, attorney, speechwriter and all-around funny guy Ben Stein knows that the shortest distance between two points is a good straight-line. Where other actors spend years spouting countless lines in pursuit of screen immortality, Stein achieved his cinematic milestone with a single word droned over and over: "Bueller ... Bueller ... Bueller." Stein's classic deadpan delivery, quick wit, encyclopedic recall and hopelessly conservative suits have made him an unlikely champion of the MTV set. Recurring roles in sit-coms such as "Charles in Charge" and "The Wonder Years" cemented his reputation as the square we love the most. His repartee with co-star Jimmy Kimmel on their wacked-out Comedy Central game show "Win Ben Stein's Money" catapulted him into a successful speaking career that has him busier than ever. - advertisement - In a less elastic world, Stein's comedic talents might have been squandered on attorneys and judges in sidebars and a few close colleagues in real bars. Following in the footsteps of his father, the noted economist and writer Herbert Stein, Ben graduated with honors in economics from Columbia University in 1966, and was valedictorian of his class at Yale Law School in 1970.

Ben Stein Interview

This interview originally appeared, in a more condensed form, in SPIN
OK, which of the following job titles does not appear on Ben Stein's resume: attorney, Nixon's speech-writer, economist, novelist, the most boring high school teacher ever in Ferris Bueller's Day Off , gossip columnist, game-show host, or talk-show host? Anybody? Anybody? If you answered "talk-show host," you would have been correct up until December 2nd, when Comedy Central began airing Turn Ben Stein On , a weekly talk-show featuring themes like "The Psychology of Humor," and "Which is a better life ethically, financially, and day-by-day: Hollywood or Politics?" The guest list (Grace Slick, Carl Berstein, a high school principle) may not have Jay or David, or even Bill Maher, looking over their shoulders. But if things ever get slow, the monotonous polymath can always turn the mic on himself. G.B. : The press release for your new show Turn Ben Stein On says your combination of genius and chutzpah allows you to ask questions only you can get away with. So please ask yourself a question only you can get away with, and then answer it for me. Ben Stein : I'd say a good question to ask Ben Stein is, "If you're so smart, how come you're not rich?" And then I'd answer by saying, I'm fairly smart, but I'm not as smart as the press department of Comedy Central says I am. And making money has very little to do with doing well in school. In fact, I would say the very very very stupidest people I went to school with wound up being the richest ones.

Although best known for his role as the boring teacher in the motion picture, Ferris Bueller's Day Off - his scene is ranked as one of the fifty most famous scenes in American film - boring is the last word you would find in a description of Ben Stein. Currently hosting the Comedy Central quiz show, Win Ben Stein's Money, Ben's background is as diverse as one could imagine. Ben is the son of the economist and writer Herbert Stein. He graduated from Columbia College, Columbia University, in 1966 with honors in economics. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1970 as valedictorian of his class by election of his classmates, where he helped to found the Journal of Law and Social Policy. He has worked as a poverty lawyer in New Haven and Washington, D.C., a trial lawyer in the field of trade regulation at the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., as well as serving as a university adjunct at American University in Washington, D.C., at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. In 1973 and 1974, he was a speechwriter and lawyer for Richard Nixon at The White House and then for Gerald Ford. (He did NOT write the line, "I am not a crook.") He has been a columnist and editorial writer for The Wall Street Journal, a syndicated columnist for The Los Angeles Herald-Examiner and King Features Syndicate, and a frequent contributor to Barron's, where his articles about the ethics of management buyouts and issues of fraud in the Milken-Dresel junk bond scheme have drawn major national attention.

Game show lets you 'Win Ben Stein's Money'
August 4, 1997
Web posted at: 9:02 p.m. EDT (0102 GMT) HOLLYWOOD (CNN) Here's the gig: You're on a game show hosted by lawyer and actor Ben Stein the guy who played the clueless economics teacher in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." You're also playing against Ben Stein. And your prize is Ben Stein's money. It's not a bizarre dream it's an actual brand-new game show on Comedy Central called "Win Ben Stein's Money." The show has a dry sense of humor and a razor wit, characteristics that Stein, a former Nixon speechwriter, modestly suggests he shares. "Why have I done it? Call me crazy," he said. For the first two rounds, contestants try to answer questions in such obscure categories as "The Poison Ivy League," "Family Feuds not hosted by Richard Dawson," and "The Boys to Men from Brazil." Stein plays along, playing to beat the finalist in the third round. Contestants can win up to $5,000. If Stein wins, he keeps what's left of the $5,000. Stein is also paid a host's salary. "If you look at the people's faces while they're playing," he said, "you get a very good idea of why capitalism defeated communism. They're very motivated at the prospect of money for not much work.

Ben Stein's Travel Secrets
In this past Sunday's New York Times Business section Ben Stein, who spends about half his life on airplanes, weighed in with a few travel secrets gleaned from millions of miles in the air.
My favorite follows: Travel with several Three Musketeers bars and a few bags of honey–roasted cashews. If your hotel has shut down its room service for the night, or if room service is as bad as it often is, you will want those snacks. I might add that it's a rare hotel that has room service that tastes as good as a Three Musketeers bar. (When I was a child they were a nickel — sniff, sniff.) And if the airline food is disappointing — isn't it funny that I say "if"? — you will be happy that you have that reliable Three Musketeers chocolaty goodness in your pocket. (No, I am not a spokesman for Three Musketeers. I just love them.) Sometimes a rush of chocolate can cover even the worst sins of an airplane.
I'm so down with Ben it's not even funny.
