Richard Starkey was born in a small two-story terraced house in the Dingle area of Liverpool, on July 7, 1940, making him the oldest Beatle, three months older than John. His father, who's name was also Richard, was originally a Liverpool dock worker, and later worked in a bakery where he met Ringo's mother Elsie. His parents broke up in 1943, and Elsie later married Harry Graves, who little Richie called his "step ladder". Although remaining cheerful throughout his childhood, it was filled with hospital time, for appendicitis at 6, at which time he went into a coma for two months, and a cold which developed into pleurisy when he was 13, causing him to miss much school. By fifteen he could just barely read and write. Like the other Beatles, young Ritchie also eventually became caught up in Liverpool's Skiffle craze. After starting his own group with Eddie Miles called The Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group in 1957, he joined The Raving Texans in 1959, a quartet which played while Rory Storm sang. During this time, he got the nickname Ringo, because of the rings he wore, and because it sounded "cowboyish", and the last name Starr so that his drum solos could be billed as "Starr Time".
Notice Ringo's real name listed
as "Richard Sharkey" Ringo first met the Beatles in Hamburg in October 1960 while there performing with what had become Rory Storm and The Hurricanes. Ringo joined the Beatles on August 18, 1962. Rory Storm was magnanimous about the theft of his drummer, but Pete Best fans were upset, holding vigils outside Pete's house and rioting at the Cavern Club, shouting "Pete Best forever! Ringo never!" His health would cause him problems again later, he missed three quarters of the 1964 tour of Scandanavia, Holland, the Far East and Australia, to have his tonsils out.

Sentimental Journey
Beaucoups Of Blues Ringo Ringo's Rotogravure ... Vertical Man Ringo was always considered the accidental Beatle, the classic example of being in the right place at the right time, and few expected his solo career to amount to much. But in fact he cranked out Top 10 singles for the next half-decade after the Beatles' demise, writing some catchy singalong tunes like "It Don't Come Easy," and getting assistance from big-name friends, including but not limited to the rest of the Fab Four. He ran out of steam amid a morass of personal problems in the late 70s, and dropped off the scene for almost a decade, before resurfacing as a superstar oldies act. (DBW) Two other notes. First, I don't think Ringo's success was an accident; he may well have been the best rock drummer in England when the Beatles decided to replace Pete Best in 1962, and he's my personal favorite of all rock drummers. Famous for contributing only one true drum solo to any of the Beatles' 200-odd songs, he's the master of understatement, aiming to complement the music instead of pounding his drums to death or showing off his technical expertise. His creativity, common sense, and class are rarely matched. Second, almost nobody listens to a rock record for the drumming, and I have to admit that Ringo's solo work is the least substantial of any of the Beatles'. However, he did contribute to a variety of other artist's records throughout the 70s, sometimes credited only by a pseudonym. I've put together a set of links to those guest appearances just to prove the point:

Last Updated: 27 Jl 05 Sentimental Journey Apple SW-3365 Apr. 24, 1970 Ringo's first solo offering was appropriately named, for it consisted of his renditions of songs his mother enjoyed. Ringo was assisted in his journey by several (other) famous persons, and the album sold well enough to peak at #20 on the charts. Not bad for an album of "standards". Beaucoups of Blues Apple SMAS-3368 Sep. 28, 1970 Ringo went to Nashville, gathered together some well-known country stars (such as Charlie Daniels), and put together his own album of country stylings. When played for people who grew up on older country music, the album usually winds up being appreciated. "Who's singing that?" But country buyers weren't interested in the Beatles' drummer, and rock buyers weren't interested much in country then. The album made it to #31, though, perhaps on talent alone. "Beaucoups of Blues" Apple 2969 Oct. 5, 1970 The title song of Ringo's country album was pulled off as a singlea single which could rise no higher than #69. The single is noteworthy in that western copies featured both a "star" on the unsliced side and the Capitol logo sliced sideApple's only such single. Eastern copies of the sleeve were misnumbered "1826". "It Don't Come Easy" Apple 1831 Apr. 16, 1971

And now for what you've all been waiting for...information about RINGO STARR         Richard Starkey was born on July 7, 1940 in Liverpool, England.  The oldest Beatle (three months older than John) was born in a two-story house in the Dingle area to Richard and Elsie Starkey.  His father was a Liverpool dock worker, and his mother worked in a bakery.  Ringo's parents met in this bakery, and later married.  When little Richie was three years old, his parents broke up.  Ringo's mother later married Harry Graves, who Ringo called his "step ladder".          Richard was a happy child despite the various hospital visits that filled much of his life.  He entered the hospital for the first time at six years of age for a bout of appendicitis.  Ringo became quite bored and even a bit lonely when he was in the hospital, so his parents brought him two toys to keep him entertained.  One was a red bus, the other was a small drum...Ringo's first drum!  Ringo kept himself well occupied with the drum, but upon noticing the lonely boy in the bed next to him, Ringo decided to give up the pretty red bus.  As little Richie leaned out of the bed to give his bus to the other boy, he fell...hitting his head and knocking himself into a coma.         Richard remained in the hospital for around another year, putting him behind in his education.  When Ringo finally got out of the hospital, he was seriously behind in his schoolwork.  He couldn't read very well, and was put in a class with kids much younger than he was.  Ringo became quite unhappy with his schooling situation.  At 13, Ringo caught a cold which turned into pleurisy, putting Ringo back into the hospital and further behind in his schoolwork.  Ringo also started smoking around this time, probably for something to do.  By fifteen he could just barely read and write.

    Ringo in Concert
    Monday, August 13, 2001
I didn't go to see Ringo playing this year. I just came from a long trip abroad and besides - it was suppose to rain (he was playing an outdoor venue). I saw him at the "All Star" band three consecutive years (I'm sure some of you feel very jealous right now, well - rightfully so...) and this time... well, it just didn't work out.
I find myself thinking a lot about George these days. Do you have the same nagging feeling as I do that his days are numbered? - I remember way back when the rumors about Freddie Mercury's health stared to spread how it was vehemently denied at first. It's a bit depressing to fathom a world without George (not that we are used to see or hear from him too often, but I find that just the notion that he's still there makes me feel better. His being always leaves some room for hope that there would be a reunion or maybe a solo tour).
I also don't have a firm opinion about Paul's imminent marriage (it shouldn't prevent him from moving forward with his plans though). I just can't help noticing how older he got. Maybe it's the contrast with his young fiancée that makes him look even older. Hey - it's not just him. It's us also. When I became a Beatles fan Paul just released his 'Pipe of Peace' album. The other day I had a chance to look at the cover of the album and to think to myself (well, I'll say it again) how older he got, but then I remembered that I was 12-13 years old at the time and I also look a whole lot different. You too I'm sure.

SUN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Starr talks about new song dedicated to George Harrison
    By JANE STEVENSON

LOS ANGELES Ringo Starr says it wasn't that difficult writing a song about fellow Beatle George Harrison, who passed away after a long battle with cancer in November 2001. Starr's new solo album, Ringo Rama, which hits stores one week from tomorrow, contains a new Harrison tribute, Never Without You. "I was happy to do it, because it was a great way to express joy and loss, and it was the best way I could do it with a song," a tanned, trim and jovial Starr, 62, told The Toronto Sun in an exclusive Canadian newspaper interview at a Beverly Hills hotel. "We started the album last year, in February, three or four months after he died, so it was to the fore that he'd gone. But where we started the song (starts singing), 'We were young, it was fun ...' it automatically went to the group, to The Beatles. "And then I was trying to put John Lennon in to say 'Hi, John,' and Harry Nillson. But it just got too messy and George was on my mind. So we decided, 'Let's stop all this. Just make this for George.'
