BARBARA STANWYCK Actor Name at birth: Ruby Stevens Barbara Stanwyck left the vaudeville stage for the movies in the late 1920s, but her career didn't take off until the '30s, thanks in part to director Frank Capra . Known as a hard-working professional, Stanwyck played a variety of roles in comedy and dramas, and by the end of the 1930s she was a reliable leading lady. Her characters were usually tough, smart and resolute, giving the impression of having been around the block, as Stanwyck herself had: orphaned at the age of four, she was raised by an older sister and quit school at the age of 13. In the 1940s she was at her career peak, starring in Lady Eve Meet John Doe Double Indemnity (1944) and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946). She seemed to play mostly matriarchs and cattle baronesses in the '50s, and later had a second career in television, with The Barbara Stanwyck Show (1960-61) and The Big Valley (1965-69) and The Thorn Birds (1983). Stanwyck was nominated for an Oscar four times, but never won; she was, however, given an Academy Award in 1981 for Lifetime Achievement. In Focus: Barbara Stanwyck

A Tribute to Barbara Stanwyck
I won't lie to you. When people ask me who my favorite classic actress is, I tell them it's Missy. I could sit and watch her read from the Windows Users Manual. What is it about Barbara Stanwyck that, for me, lifts her a notch above her contemporaries? Besides her voice and her face (and her legs), I think it was the fact that she could do anything, from goofy comedy ( The Lady Eve ) to utter tragedy ( Stella Dallas" ) and everything in between. She was one of the most talented and ahead-of-her-time actresses Hollywood ever produced, and the greatest "tough broad" in classic film not to mention on TV. Stanwyck's life wasn't very different from many of the characters she played. She started out as an orphan named Ruby Stevens, worked in a factory, and by 1944 had become the highest-paid woman in America. While best known for films like

Egotism usually just a case of mistaken nonentity. My only problem is finding a way to play my fortieth fallen female in a different way from my thirty-ninth. There is a point in portraying surface vulgarity where tragedy and comedy are very close. Sponsors obviously care more about a ninety-second commercial and want to pay you more than any guest star gets for a ninety-minute acting performance.

BARBARA STANWYCK
One of America's Most Beloved Actresses!
Most of America's audiences see Barbara Stanwyck as the matriarch of the family known as the Barkley's on TV's western, THE BIG VALLEY, where she played Victoria. Later she starred on the hit drama, DYNASTY. But for millions of other fans, she had a movie career that spanned from 1927 until 1964, and then was on television until 1986. It was a film career that lasted for 59 years. She was born, Ruby Stevens, on July 16, 1907, in Brooklyn, New York. She went to work at the local telephone company for $14 dollars a week, but she had the urge to somehow enter show business. Dreams, that was all it was. When not working, she pounded the pavement in search of dancing jobs. The persistance paid off. Barbara was hired as a chorus girl for the princely sum of $40 a week. This was so much better than the wages she was getting from the phone company. She was 17 and she was going to make the most out of the opportunity that had been given her. In 1928, Barbara moved to Hollywood where she was to start out one of the most lucrative careers filmdom had ever seen. She was an extremely versatile actress, who could adapt to any role.

Barbara Stanwyck
"When I was a kid, I was so crazy about westerns," recalled Barbara Stanwyck in 1968. "I swore that when I became an actress -I was just going to do that." Stanwyck would eventually become a western star, but she would be better known for her other Hollywood films before she got her childhood wish. Born Ruby Katherine Stevens in Brooklyn, Stanwyck was an orphan by the age of five. She was placed in a series of foster homes and quit school at the age of 13 to become a dancer. While still in her teens, she landed in the in the chorus of the Ziegfeld Follies and then on to small parts in Broadway plays. A screen test with Frank Capra in 1930 propelled Stanwyck into an outstanding 30-year film career working with major directors such as Capra, Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder and William Wellman and winning four Academy Award nominations. With a few exceptions, none of these films were westerns. It was in television that Stanwyck earned her reputation as a western star. Her role as matriarch Victoria Barkley on "The Big Valley" (1965-69) earned her an Emmy Award and a new lease on her career. She continued to work in television until the mid 1980s.

NAME: Barbara Stanwyck BORN: BIRTH PLACE: New York, USA DIED:
BIOGRAPHY

Born Ruby Stevens, Stanwyck was the daughter of a bricklayer. Her Mother died in 1910 and her Father ran away to Panama, leaving her sister Mildred to support the children as a chorus girl. She took Ruby on the road, whetting her desire to be a dancer.
Ruby found a typing job with the Remick Music Company in Tin Pan Alley. A manager there got her a job at the Strand Roof nightclub.
Ruby Stevens met the playwright Willard Mack, who hired her as a chorus girl in his new play. Mack built up Stevens's role, coached her intensively and persuaded her to change her name to Barbara Stanwyck. On 20 October 1926, she opened in 'The Noose', to unanimous praise and, in 1927, went on to win a supporting role in the silent film 'Broadway Nights', her first picture.
In August 1928, Stanwyck married the actor-comedian Frank Fay, and they moved to California in August 1929. For six months Stanwyck did only screen tests, until Frank Capra signed her to star in his 'Ladies of Leisure' in 1930, after which her popularity soared.

Barbara Stanwyck had the ability ¿to grab your heart and tear it to pieces,¿ said Frank Capra of the star he directed five times. The documentary Barbara Stanwyck: Fire and Desire (1991) lends support to Capra's words, demonstrating her remarkable range in film clips from her six decades in Hollywood. Included are glimpses of Stanwyck at every stage of her career; she conquered every genre from screwball comedy ( Ball of Fire , 1941) to thriller ( Sorry, Wrong Number , 1948) to soap opera ( Stella Dallas , 1937) and every role from tough-as-nails working girl ( Shopworn , 1932) to femme fatale ( Double Indemnity , 1944) to TV matriarch ( The Big Valley ). Stanwyck was considered a consummate professional, who as the documentary says, ¿lived fiercely before the camera and almost shyly off it.¿
Stanwyck's story is a classic rags-to-riches tale. Orphaned at four after her mother died (her father had deserted the family a few years earlier), Stanwyck (born Ruby Stevens) grew up in poverty in Brooklyn foster homes. She started dancing at age 16, first in local speakeasies, before becoming a Ziegfeld chorus girl. Stanwyck hit Broadway in 1926 in The Noose and two years later, when her husband, comedian Frank Fay, accepted a Hollywood contract, Stanwyck went along. Her first stand out movie opportunity came in Capra's
