Marketing John Coltrane Ascension of an Icon by Rashied Gabriel Blazing a trail down Guadalupe, a pack of street kids who appear to be under the influence of Perry Farrell panhandle to support their alternative lifestyles. While passing on foot, the hope that these have-nots will find a positive outlet to direct their feelings of alienation and subsequent rebellion crosses my mind. Reaching my destination at the corner of 21st street, Sound Exchange, I enter the new/used record store, and am greeted by a giant poster of Kurt Cobain, and several more large images taken from the film Reservoir Dogs . It's disheartening. In 1996, misguided aggression makes for quite a fashion statement as addicts and gangsters are considered icons rather than criminals. Yet, in working my way through compact disc hell toward the rear of the store, I spot another huge poster which presents nothing but the determined face of John Coltrane. Thirty years after his untimely passing, how does such a model of discipline fit into our current environment of relentless adversity and decadence? As the first generation of Americans destined to fail by the crumbling system of capitalism reaches maturity, transcendental jazz is as important today as it was when Coltrane poured 13 years of his short life into the encoding of revolutionary thought. After years of developing a unique voice on the saxophone (primarily tenor), Coltrane's recording picked up a full head of steam in 1955 with the Miles Davis Quintet and steadily evolved toward the sky until he died on June 21, 1967. Creating music during a time when the struggle for universal liberation had succeeded by breaking down several institutions of colonialism, his work captured the spirit of the slave resurrected as king.

Rather than with books, his enormous reputation rested upon is various lecturs; as a result, much of his work was published posthumously from reconstructions of his various talks. Austin is perhaps best known for his belief that much of philosophy is performed with excessive haste and carelessness - in particular when it comes to the language people use. Because of this, he felt that greater precision with language would entail fewer unnecessary disagreements and greater progress in philosophy. This perspective of his was explored in great detail in a series of lectures later published under the title Sense and Senibilia. In it Austin examined one of A.J. Ayer's works and argued that the entire project was undermined by the lack of any clear understanding of the centeral concepts used.

John Austin John Austin was born. March 3, 1790, Creeting Mill, Suffolk, Eng.d. December 1859, Weybridge, Surrey), English jurist whose writings, especially The Province of Jurisprudence Determined (1832), advocated a definition of law as a species of command and sought to distinguish positive law from morality. He had little influence during his lifetime outside the circle of Utilitarian supporters of Jeremy Bentham. His authority came posthumously. Life Austin began to study law in 1812 after five years in the army and from 1818 to 1825 practiced unsuccessfully at the chancery bar. His powers of rigorous analysis and his uncompromising intellectual honesty deeply impressed his contemporaries, and in 1826, when University College, London, was founded, he was appointed its first professor of jurisprudence, a subject that had previously occupied an unimportant place in legal studies. He spent the next two years in Germany studying Roman law and the work of German experts on modern civil law whose ideas of classification and systematic analysis exerted an influence on him second only to that of Bentham.
