87. John Austin, Mayor Of Oxford
Memorial to john Austin. Austin was buried at st Martin s Church at Carfax on 18 May 1775. and a memorial tablet was put up with the following words
http://www.headington.org.uk/oxon/mayors/1714_1835/austin_john_1742_1761_1771.ht
John Austin Mayor of Oxford 1742/3, 1761/2, and 1771/2 John Austin Henry Wise (who had himself already been Mayor twice and would serve a third term in 1730). Austin's older brother, James, was already in Oxford, apprenticed to a chandler. Austin was chosen Mayor's Child by the new Mayor, Sir Oliver Greenway, in September 1729, and paid 3s. 4d. for not serving as Constable. He took up his place as Chamberlain immediately, and was appointed a Cloth Searcher, an appropriate duty for a mercer. Austin and his first wife Ann baptised five children in five years at St Martin's Church at Carfax: Mary Ann (1731), Anna (1732), William (1733), Elizabeth (1734), and John William in 1736. Both William and Elizabeth were buried within a month of their baptisms, and in 1738 Austin's wife also died. In September 1736 Austin was appointed Junior Bailiff, and in April 1741 was elected one of the Mayor's eight Assistants. In September 1742 he was chosen as Mayor, choosing Thomas Day as his Child. In the January of his term of office he took on an apprentice, John Smith. Austin married a second wife, also called Ann, in the early 1740s and they baptised Elizabeth in 1744 and Jarvis (presumably named after his grandfather) in 1745, On 7 November 1747 the second Ann also died.

Despite beating Vela the first time around, the 21-year-old Chavez says her former rival is her biggest challenge to date. I congratulate the Government on finding time for it in a heavy legislative period. I welcome the Bill for the same reasons as my hon. Friend the Member for Leicester, South (Mr. Marshall). It is one of the few occasions when such a measure confers rather than removes rights. The British Nationality Act 1981 removed rights from the people whom we are considering today. In 1983, citizenship was granted to the people of the Falkland Islands as a result of a rebellion in the Tory ranks. It has taken another 14 years for the election of a Government who are prepared to extend that citizenship to the other territories. That is one year for each dependentnow overseasterritory. I want not to dwell on the past but to look to the future, and to ask for clarification on one or two points. I should like the Minister to expand on his response to my hon. Friend the Member for Chorley (Mr. Hoyle) about self-determination. As hon. Members know, the right to self-determination is an intrinsic part of the United Nations charter; it is covered in the first article. Some of the overseas territories, the Falkland Islands, for example, have that right enshrined in the preamble to their constitutions. I seek an assurance that, even though the right to self-determination is contained in a preamble, not the main body of the text, it has the same legal validity in international law. I also ask an assurance about the reviews that are taking place of overseas territories' constitutions. Will territories be allowed to incorporate the right to self-determination in their constitutions?During the debate, several points have been made about Gibraltar. Self-determination is important in the context of Gibraltar. The Order in Council that established the 1969 constitution of Gibraltar stated:

99. Gregory J. Austin, With Rick Sellers, Fallen City
Austin and Sellers could have easily stretched out any of these stories into a Hopefully this isn t the last story of Jarrett st. john and Nakella
http://www.rambles.net/austin_fallen02.html
Gregory J. Austin,
with Rick Sellers,
Fallen City
(Zumaya, 2002)
Most of mankind died in an ecological disaster nearly 700 years ago. There are two groups of humans still living, each unaware of the other's existence. One consists of descendants of aborigines, living in harmony with the Earth all this time. Nearby, there is an underground city called Sanctum in which "civilized" man has continued, albeit in a socially stratified manner. Fallen City , by Gregory J. Austin with Rick Sellers, begins as a story of two men living in in this post-apocalyptic world: Jarret St. John, a mazeplayer in Sanctum believing the surface can sustain life again, and Nakella, a surface-dweller seeking to leave his tribe and explore the green landscape. Both of these men are young idealists seeking a world beyond their established boundaries. Seemingly, this would be enough of a set-up to have a rich, full story. This scenario comprises maybe the first 80 pages. At only 192 pages, this very fast-paced novel is a condensed collection of many different stories (St. John getting to the surface; Nakella exploring the world; the unusual gladiatorial Sanctum sport of mazeplay; the stratified society of Sanctum; life on the surface; freeing Sanctum). Austin and Sellers could have easily stretched out any of these stories into a 300-page novel. Thankfully, they didn't. There is so much going on in this novel that it is a chore keep up with. Don't worry, though, Austin and Sellers have a way of recapping events that keeps the book fresh while filling in missing or overlooked pieces.
